To let go the anchor, to get the lines over, to answer a critical bell in time, to control the ponderous Weight and momen- tum of the ship demands the coordinated effort of many men. Another Sunday favorite. First you pick up a 300 pound sack of potatoes, then you try to figure out what route the Supply Department wants you to take through the ship. Ask directions and you are shown a diagram which resembles the game board for Uncle Wiggly's Cabbage Patch. If you get bored waiting in line for the next load you can always play the numbers game: Six- teen pallets at a ton and a half a pallet divided by the entire crew, now how many pounds does that make for me? There to meet the hovering monster is the'He1o Detail. General Quarters f.,f Www, 7, The General Alarm creates a moment's chaos. Passageways are filled with running men, watertight fittings slam shut, gear is lit off. Just as quickly the confusion subsides. The ship is ready to fight. Sights to See There is always something for the fantail tourist. The sun rises and sets in phenomenal colors. The porpoises perform acrobatics. Ships race and maneuver, tracing crazy designs on the sea. On occasion there are Russians to gape at- only to realize that they are gaping right back at you. ,,,, 11 X, 'i'-rs- revg- f s- iei- The Air Show There are drawbacks to traveling with an aircraft carrier. A destroyer is forever dodging to keep out of the way or sprinting to keep up. The accompanying benefit is a round-the-clock aerial sideshow. The carrier pilots swoop and dive and flame out, providing hours of view- ing entertainment. Sometimes they come in for a low pass- you can tell because the Whip antennas are still flapping after you've recovered from the exhaust fumes. .,.,,,zi,u V?
