Wa LTJC JOHN K. KOELSCH USN K Deceased j john Kelvin Koelsch was born in London, Eng- land, on December 22, 1923, a son of Mrs. Beulah Ann tHubbardl Koelsch and the late Henry A. Koelsch. On September 14, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve as Aviation Cadet, under the Y-5 Program, and on October 23, 1944, his enlistment terminated to accept an appointment as Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He was promoted to LT-IC on August 1, 1946. Reporting for active duty on January 4. 1943. he underwent flight training and on October 24. 1944. was designated Naval Aviator. Following extensive duty in the Atlantic Fleet. he reported as Assistant Operations Officer of Heli- copter Utility Squadron ONE and Officer in Charge of Helicopter Squadron ONE, Detachment EICHT. based at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Nfiramar. Calif., in August 1950. He remained there until Oc- tober 1950 when he joined the USS PRINCETON. as Officer in Charge of the Helicopter Detachment and Cold Weather Officer. On Iuly 3, 1951 he was reported Missing in Ac- tion as the result of an airplane crash whilc on a rescue mission in the Korean area. It was later re- ported that he had been taken a prisoner of war and died of malnutrition on October 16. 1951. while a prisoner. 2 lle was posthumously awarded the Maid 1 llonor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidify I the risk of his life above and beyond the call dk, while serving with a Navy Helicopter Rescue UQ in North Korea on july fl, l95l... With an almost solid avg. cast concealing everything below the llwlmtaig peaks, he descended in his unarmed and vulnerablg aircraft without the accompanying fighter escort to an extremely loss altitude beneath the cloud levd and began a systematic search. Despite the increas- ingly intense enemy fire, which struck his helicopter on one occasion, he persisted in his mission until he succeeded in locating the downed pilot, who wg suffering from serious burns on the arms and legs. 15'hile the victim was being hoisted into the aircraft it was struck again by an accurate burst of hostile fire and crashed on the side ofthe mountain. Quick- ly extricating his crewmen and the aviator from the wreckage. Lieutenant tjunior gradei Koelsch led them from hostile troops. evading the enemy forces for nine days and rendering such medical attention as possible to his severely bumed companion until all were captured. l'p to the time of his death while still a captive ofthe enemy . Lieutenant tjunior gradel Koelsch steadfastly refused to aid his captors in any manner and served to inspire his fellow prisoners by his fortitude and consideration for others.
