KOELSCH USN K Deceased j john Kelvin Koelsch was born in London, Eng- land, on December 22, 1923, a son of Mrs. Beulah Ann tHubbardl Koelsch and the late Henry A. Koelsch. On September 14, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve as Aviation Cadet, under the Y-5 Program, and on October 23, 1944, his enlistment terminated to accept an appointment as Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He was promoted to LT-IC on August 1, 1946. Reporting for active duty on January 4. 1943. he underwent flight training and on October 24. 1944. was designated Naval Aviator. Following extensive duty in the Atlantic Fleet. he reported as Assistant Operations Officer of Heli- copter Utility Squadron ONE and Officer in Charge of Helicopter Squadron ONE, Detachment EICHT. based at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Nfiramar. Calif., in August 1950. He remained there until Oc- tober 1950 when he joined the USS PRINCETON. as Officer in Charge of the Helicopter Detachment and Cold Weather Officer. On Iuly 3, 1951 he was reported Missing in Ac- tion as the result of an airplane crash whilc on a rescue mission in the Korean area. It was later re- ported that he had been taken a prisoner of war and died of malnutrition on October 16. 1951. while a prisoner. 2 lle was posthumously awarded the Maid 1 llonor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidify I the risk of his life above and beyond the call dk, while serving with a Navy Helicopter Rescue UQ in North Korea on july fl, l95l... Quick- ly extricating his crewmen and the aviator from the wreckage. Naval Academy in Iune, 1954, he was assigned to the USS BE.-ILE CDDE 4715 where he served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Of- ficer. Subsequently he was assigned as Squadron Communica' tions Officer on the STAFF of Commander Destroyer-Squadron TWENTY-EIGHT. In january, 1958, he was ordered to command USS SACANIORE CATA 2089. In September of 1959, he was enrolled as a student in the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. from which he received a Masters Degree in Operations Analysis. He was subsequently assigned to duty as Executive Officer. USS LESTER CDE-10225. This was followed by a tour as an in structor in the Naval Science Department, U.S. Naval Academy. He then attended the U.S. Naval WVar College as a student in the command and staff course. Immediately prior to coming to KOELSCH, he served as Executive Oflicer. USS LAYVRENFE CDDG 43. Commander CRAWFORD is married to the former Marv Elim- beth Going of Middleton, R.I. They have three children. From 1959 to 1961, he served as CIC officer on the world's first Cuided Missile Frigate, the USS DEWEY CDLG-141. In the fall of 1961, LCDR Moore, then a Lieutenant, was ordered as Command- ing Officer ofthe Escort Vessel USS FARMINGTON QPCE-8949. In September of 1963, he reported to the Commander Key West Test and Evaluation De- tachment ofthe Operational Test and Evaluation Force for duty as Sonar Systems Evaluations Of- ficer.
