IIISTIIBY 0F KNOX1ILI la llli ll SCll00l ln l905 the presudent of th Board of Educatuon of the Knoxvulle schools Judge John W Green urged the buuldung of a new hugh school un several addresses mad to the people ofthe cuty Many other men such as Herbert l-lennegar a graduate of one of Knox vulle s schools made notable oratuons on the need for a new hugh school The work of these men for thus hugh school was a prumary factor un the fught for a hugher standard of educa tuon The unstututuon of learnung at that tume was called the Gurl s Hugh School but boys and gurls both attended Thus hugh s hool was located on the corner of Wall and Unuon Street When Superuntendent S A Mynders came to the cuty un l907 he went to work un a systcmatuc manner to secure the new hugh scnool It was due to hus efforts propably more than any other man that the magnufucent buuldung was secured ln order to get th buulclung publuc sentument had to be aroused Thus was done largely through the Mothers Assocua tuon now known as the Parent Teachers Assocuatuon and newspapers as well as educa tuonal meetungs Mr Mynders found able and wullung workers un the cuty offucuals The sute of the new school w s once the pruvate home of J Y Johnston Thus sute us now the educatuonal home of some l8OO students and us ruch un tradutuon and funancual ap precuatuon The man uon was erected un l87l and was torn away un l909 after th property was purchased by the cuty The orugunal buulduno was opened un l9lO wuth an attendance of 646 An addutuon to the buuldung made ut possuble to uncr ase the enrollment un l9l4 to l 337 A house warmung of the schoo buuldung was held under th durectuon of the 'Vlother s 1 Y 7 7 1 1 V .
