Clause IX We leave the opportunity to repent to any sinners who are riding Mr. lobe's Amen Bench. SENIOR CLASS '49 ' We, the undersigned, set our hand and seal in witness hereof. Witnesses: Sarah Spahr Bob lones Marshall Pierce C l a S S 0f l 9 4 9 'YOUIl IIEBITAGEQ' You will soon join a host of people, more than l5,000 men and women, who are graduates from this high school. You have spent three of the best years of your life in these halls of learning. Every degree and variety of success is found among your classmates. You now will possess a key Cthe diplomal which will help you enter many avenues of activity. After you enter, you will be on your own. The sum total of your home life, your church and school life, your associations, your recreations will motivate your ambitions and your efforts to succeed. A healthy body, a clear mind and a clean heart will carry you forward when disappointment and trouble oppose you on your life journey. Always keep in mind that you are not alone in life. Your immediate family, your close friends, your church groups, your neighbors, all want you to be good' and make good. Remember you will always take pride in saying that you are a graduate from Knoxville High School CK. H. SJ, but the statement will have much more worth, if your thousands of Alumni comrades can answer, yes, he is living up to the ideals of that great institution and adding honor to the vast hosts who entered her doors, we are indeed proud of him. Education is a life job. You are ready for a Graduation into life work or more formal education, at Commencement Exercsiesn you will receive a Diploma, the key to opportunity in the fairest land in the world. Life then offers many roads leading out in every direction. You need but to read the papers or listen to the radio to learn daily how many miserably lose their way. There is a straight way that leads to everlasting life and few there be that find it. May our many high school graduates be among the few who find it. W. E. O. T. C. Cadet Corps was organized in the Knoxville Public Schools the first of the school year of 1919 by Major M. Estes, Professor of Military Science and Tactics, and Major Dyer, Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics. Commanding officers since have been: Major Harry V. Stephenson, Col. R. R. Wood, Major E. C. Seeds, Lt. Col. Iohn Moore, Capt. Keller Smith, Major Robert V. Vaupel, Col. Newman R. Burns, and Major Iames H. Cook, the present Professor of Military Science and Tactics. ln the three-year course in high school R. O. T. C., the cadet receives instruction in many fields. These include: Close order drill, tactics of war, military courtesy, health, discipline, and organization. Furthermore, the Pt. O. T. C. strives to instill in each cadet the soldierly virtues of team work, self-control, and leadership. The object of the course of instruction in the R. O. T. C. is primarily to lay the foundation of intelligent citizenship by inculcating in the student habits of precision, orderliness, courtesy, correctness of posture and deport- ment, leadership, and respect for, and loyalty to, constituted authority: secondly, to prepare the student for further military instruction which will qualify him for a position of leadership in time of National Emergency. The rifle marksmanship course gives all cadets an opportunity to develop proficiency in trigger squeeze, position, and slight alignment in rifle fire. Those who demonstrate unusual ability make up the Knoxville High School rifle team. The thoroughness and effectiveness of this training is proved by the fine record of the team this year. It has won in several matches with neighboring schools and organizations. This year the battalion, which comprises four commands, a staff, and a band, participated in the Armistice Day Parade and will give a formal review in May. The big event of the year is the annual Competitive Drill, in which the best drilled company is awarded the Prize Company Flag by the American Legion. On this day the finals for the Morgan Medal and the Stone Medal are held, the former being awarded to the best-drilled second year cadet and the latter to the outstanding first year cadet. Also the Band Medal is given to that band member who receives the highest rating in the school of the soldier, military bearing and care of the instrument and uniform. To the best-drilled Honorary Cadet Officer the Daughters of the American Revolution awards the Sponsor's Medal, and to the best drilled cadet in each company goes the News-Sentinel Medal. ff Q ,W A . 1 wgww 41 :H wiwaiw 1 5 n x awww L 55 5? ei 7 :-' mm.. 5 9 Q 3 ' ,.. .. ::. WATT IENNINGS Watt was a surprise package ot coach Iones. He came up from second string in midseason and held down his position in fine style. Jennings will be back next year holding down the number two back- field position. HUBERT ASHE Hubert made room lor himself on the first team by his hard work. He was followed by Bay Byrd with 60 points and Tom McAffry with 49. The Trojans scored 200 points to their opponents' 91. The Trojans opened the season with a 19-6 victory over Middlesboro. Bill Blackstock, Ray Byrd, and Bob Neff each made one touchdown a piece, and Tom McAffry added the extra point. Ray Byrd and Bye Bye Blackstock again led the Blues to a 21-0 victory over Elizabethton. Tom McAffry made the extra points. Troy journeyed to johnson City where they took an early lead and coasted to a 26-0 win. Blackstock scored twice, Mc!-Xffry once, and Byrd once. Miami High came to the Smoky city and considered themselves lucky to leave with a 6-6 tie. Hubert Ashe scored the lone Trojan tally. lt was the first of five straight hard games to be played by our team in five successive weeks. Bay Byrd led the Trojans to a 27-13 victory over the Purple Pounders of Chattanooga. jim Aycock, Henry Heinz, Bill Blackstock, and Ray Byrd each scored a touchdown. Rule High,s Golden Bears proved a tough nut to crack and fought the Trojans on even terms for most of the game. The game left the team in bad physical condition for their next game. The Kingsport lndians took the measure of Troy to the tune of 40-7. Ray Byrd led the team to its only tally. ln the second quarter he led the team on an eighty yard drive. From then on it was an Indian scalping party. Young High's Yellow jackets defeated the boys in a jam-packed stadium. lt was a hard-fought game from whistle to whistle. Final score 7-13. In an afternoon game the Stair Tech Tigers were beaten in a rough and tumble game from start to finish with the Trojans winning 13-6. Morristown fell before the Blue Wave 40-0 in the City-County premire. ln the annual Knox-Central game at Shields-Watkins the Trojans held all the marbles and won 20-0. Tom McAffry led the scoring with 8 points. Ray Byrd and Bill Blackstock tallied once each. lt was ample revenge for last year's 0-7 loss. He was good for at least 13 or 14 points in any game. A master of the rebound. Gene is one of the maior cogs in Coach Bible's fast break. Simpson is a good passer, a superb shot. and has an excellent floor game. He is doubtlessly the most valuable member of the team. BOB RULE Bob came through in fine style this year. He was prom- ising in games last season and didn't let our hopes down this season. Bouncin Bob carried a major load in this year's scoring column. He is a good reason for our successful fast break. DICK CREECH Dickie came out to make the team this year and wouldn't settle for anything short of a starting slot. He was the most impoved member of the squad and holds down the center position in rine style. He will be back next year cavortinq for Bible's Roundballers. FRANK McAFFRY Give Frank half cr chance and he'll hit from any where can be truthfully said of McAffry. He is a mas- ter of the set shot and death on Crips. He is another member of the team who will be back next season and even greater things will be expected of him then. SAM HILL Sam is one of these boys who lives on basketball. To him football and baseball merely kill time between the winter season. He is not the highest scoring member of the team but his defensive play and floor game make him well worth his shoes and locks. He is a good passer and sets up our fast break. He was elected Alt.
