IUILL HIID TGSTHMEIHT We, the Senior Class of Knoxville High School, of this year of one thousand nine hundred and forty-seven, being of sound l?l mind, make this, our last will and testament, hereby annulling all previous documents made by us. We, the Senior Class, bequeath our ability to not lyuk, yukl get caught wandering through the halls by Miss tBring 'Um Back Alivel Coen to any Iunior dumb enough to try it. We, the doodlers of the Senior Class, leave our priceless CNobody 'el buy 'eml masterpieces in our textbooks to the Seniors who succeed us. We, the students at table five, third period, do leave to Major lpardon. Colonel, suhl Lowery tafter tests, better known as Yard-Birdl the formula for our luck in almost, but not quite Cwe still keep our fingers crossedl, blowing up the chemistry lab to be held for the use of future chemists. We, the everlasting gum chewers of the Senior Class, leave our chews, parked in various and sundry places, to Roy Conner and his Heirs. We, the Senior Class, although we don't want to, find that we must leave Knoxville High this Iune to the love and care of the luniors. To Mr. Montgomery, may we of the Trojan staff, leave, with all our heartfelt sympathy, the future annuals that will have to be put out. We, the undersigned, set our hand and seal in witness hereof, this second day of Ianuary, nineteen hundred and forty-seven. SENIOR CLASS OF '47. Witnesses: SEARLE MCMURRY MARTHA BRADY MARGARET ANN IAEGER HISTORY OF I'I.H.S. The present Knoxville High School building was completed in 19105 teachers and pupils marched over in a body to occupy the new plant. Up to that time Boyd School, near the Daylight Building, was the only high school in Knoxville, and it was called the girls' high school because most of the boys in the city attended a private boys' school called Baker-Himel. Although leading Knoxville citizens argued that the High School was much too large when finished, it was completely filled in a few yearsp two separate additions and the gymnasium across the street have been added since that time. The attendance increased from 600 to a peak of 2300 as the full four-year high school continued in this building. As junior highs were built, the ninth year was retained in these buildings: and the enrollment in the last three years ttenth, eleventh, twelfthl at Knoxville High School dropped to a normal of around 1800. The school has always developed and maintained a broad, comprehensive program in its regular curriculum. Extra-curricular activities have been encouraged, and the tendency is for them to develop into the curricular. Physical education, the R. O. T. C., the band, chorus, orchestra, dra- matics and art work illustrate the gradual evolution from the extra curricular to the curricular. Strictly extra-curricula activities are the Student Council, the Blue and White publication, the Trojan, athletics, Kiking Club, Stamp Club, Hi- Y, Girl Reserves, Girl Scouts, Riding Club, Chess Club and subject clubs such as Trialego, commercial, Latin, French, Writers', Spanish, Ir. Town Meeting of the Air, science, home economics and many others. We have a strong faculty, all holding B.A. degrees and most of them the Master's degree. We have been accredited by the Southern Association since l9l4y we have always been accredited by the State Department since the State started to exercise direct control over the city school. W. E. Cadet Corps was organized in the Knoxville Public Schools the first of the school year of 1919 by Major Howell M. Estes, Professor of Military Science and Tactics, and Major' Dyer, Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics. Commanding officers since have been: Major Harry V. Stephenson, Col. R. R. Wood, Maj. E. C. Seeds, Lt. Col. John Moore, Capt. Keller Smith, Major Robert V. Vaupel, and Col. Newman R. Burns, the present Professor of Military Science and Tactics. In the three-year course in high school R. O. T. C., the cadet receives instruction in many fields. These include: Close order drill, tactics of war, military courtesy, health, discipline, and organization. Furthermore, the R. O. T. C. strives to instill in each cadet the soldierly virtues of team work, self-control, and leadership. The rifle marksmanship course gives all cadets an opportunity to develop proficiency in trigger squeeze, position, and slight alignment in rifle fire. Those who demonstrate unusual ability make up the Knoxville High School rifle team. The thoroughness and effectiveness of this training is proved by the fine record of the team this year. lt has won in several matches with neigh- boring schools and organizations and placed first in the Seventh Army match. The school can well be proud of its fine rifle team, unquestionably one of the finest in the South. This year the batallion, which comprises four commands, a staff, and a band, participated in the Armistice Day Parade and will give a formal review on the May Day Program. The big event of the year is the annual Competitive Drill, in which the best drilled company is awarded the Prize Company Flag by the American Legion. On this day the finals for the Morgan Medal and the Stone Medal are held, the former being awarded to the best-drilled second year cadet and the latter to the outstanding firs year cadet. Also the Band Medal is given to that band member who receives the highest rating in the school of the soldier, military bearing and care of the instrument and uniform. To the best drilled Honorary Cadet Officer the American Daughters of the Revolution awards the Sponsor's Medal, and to the best-drilled cadet in each company goes the News-Sentinel Medal. Big Gus, playing his second year on the first string, was rough and ready for anything. Seiber, the fair-haired boy who caught the tying touchdown pass in the Central game, may be seen next year catch- ing passes for the Vols. CAPTAIN IOE BLACK, Guard-The stocky little captain was a big gun in our forward wall this year. Although small, he proved to be mighty. Litt1e Ice led our team to one of the most successful seasons yet. He was a swell captain and plays ball equally as well. Q wig W. C. COOPER, Back- Dub is consid- ered one of the finest all-around backs in the South. Through his excellent passing and superb running he made All-City, All-East Tennnessee. All- State, and All-Southern. Now he is looking forward to a berth with Ney- land at the Hill. microns TOMMY SLACK. Back--Slack is one of the boys who helped the way for Dub. His educated toe seldom tailed to kick the pigskin over the goal. He also snagged his toe into a scholar- ship at the University of Tennessee. Q4 v f 2s ' Q, 5 'y f 3353? KM:- . Trojans welcomed Coach Sam Jones back from the Army with a 20-7 triumph over Middlesboro, Ky. The next win came over Elizabethton. Elizabethton proved to have a strong running attack and if time had not run out, the half-time score could easily have been 15-13 instead of 15-6. The Trojans came back to score 20 points while Elizabethton was scoring 7. giving the Trojans a final advantage of 34-13. The next week, the boys in blue journeyed to .lonhson City and brought home a 34-0 victory. Next was Stair Tech which succumbed to the devasting power of the Trojans by a score of 41-7. Cooper and company got some sweet revenge by trouncing Memphis Tech 27.0. The next game proved to be a thriller. Cooper passed and ran brilliantly and was assisted by good blockin gand pass receiving. The Trojans defensive power showed itself here as they stopped Youngs four times inside the Trojan's 20 yard line. The journey south of the river proved quite successful as the Trojans were the winners, 14-6. The Kinrspurt Indians came south featuring a powerful running and passing game built around All-Southern Cecil Puckett. They were knocked off their No. 1 rating in the state by a hunch of Trojans, who refused to be awed hy all the press notices. Every boy in this game was a star. The most outstanding, being Cooper, Gordon, Seiber, White, Slack, Meyers. Pavleis, and others too numerous to mention. who stopped Kingsport cold and opened big holes for the backs to run through to win 20-12. The Trojans warmed up for their trip to Miami by stoppin: Rule's Ken Pruitt for a 39-0 victory. Miami! Girle! Ocean Breezes! Yes. that came next for the Trojans, also their first defeat by a score of 14-13. The Miami Hi Hurricane was completely outplayed all during the game. but managed to bolt the Tennesseans on the four yard line to protect their one point margin to bolt the Tennesseans on the four yard line to protect their one point margin of victory. On returning from Miami, the Trojans defeated Oak Ridge 46-7 and Morristown 33-6, while getting ready for the Central game on Thanksgiving. The City-County game! The highlight of the season. This game did prove to be the hirhlight of the season, too, with the Bobcats turning in their best performance of the year. The Trojans missed their best opportunity to score in the first period when a fumble lost 15 yards and the Bobcats took over. The Bobcats scored early in the second quarter and passed for the point on a beautifully executed pass play from Beeler to Sherrod. The third quarter was mostly offense for Central and defense for the Trojans. No scoring took place. The fourth quarter, the Trojans came to life and after holding the Bobcats for downs on their own six inch line. took the ball and drove 99 yards, 7 ft. and 6 inches for a touchdown. Cooper's passing and running featured the drive. The pass received of Hughie Dance and his two beautiful laterals carried the ball full into Central territory. The scoring play came on a beautifully executed play with Cooper, escaping the Central offense, and throwing the ball over into Seiber's waitin! arms. Slack converted for the 27th time and the game was tied at 7-7. Central then began a drive which took them to Knoxville's 10 yd. line, but the Trojans again held them, and Father Time ended the contest. Thus ended a highly successful season for the Trojans. The squad was filled with boys who had the true Trojan spirit and did not know the word, quit. May they always employ these same principles as they :zo through life that they did on the gridiron. Success only comes from clean. hard play, which is learned in sports and can he well ap- plied to our daily life. Stars are too numerous to mention and it would he unfair to some if any names were used here, as some of the most valuable boys never receive any glory. All of them contributed something worthwhile to the squad, led by Capt. Joe Black and Alt. Capt. James Seiber. By CASEY STEPHENSON ANDY MYERS. Tackle- Big Sid, one of the fastest linemen for his size i210 poundsl. played outstanding games throughout the year. His superb tackles and fast rushing helped win many cr ball game. He was the only Iunior on the starting eleven. Due to his outstanding play and leader- ship ability, he was chosen Captain for the 1947 season. BILL GREEK PAVLIS, Guard-Greek. playing under the handicap of a broken arm, turned in stellar perform- ances throughout the season, espe- cially during the Central game. The stocky little guard was named on the All-City team lor the second con- secutive season. . t r XV :Rx IAMES IOHNSON. Tackle-An unsung hero who was one of the main cogs in the forward line. His excellent blocking and tackling helped the backs plunge through to the goal. A fine fellow and a good sport. ,gt , ww -r r ess HUGH DANCE, Back - The handsome. dark-skinned wingback was one of the mainstays of the team. Hugh stepped into iniured Hymie Gordon's shoes, and filled them amply. Besides being a ileetfooted reverse man, he was a pass snatchin' fool. CHARLIE IOHNSON, Back-Charlie could always be depended on to bull his way through the opponents' line. He consistently showed the power and drive which are necessary to make a good back. He'll be here with the pep and punch next year. , L. 1 v 5 l 2 I i I Y f x gl 3 Q vz ,ai I pw , 5 I Q ,Q K , A , X S 2 f -1 ' X o 4 6 : f ,gxkk M43 3 23 .W 51, t .......... -- U, , , Q mam ggi w 1, +3 1? DECHTHLOI1 IIIEITGR IIIEIHSUREIS PGIITHLHLOII GVGHTS A new sport in Physical Education classes, called the Pentathlon, has for its purpose a program of tests and measurements. All Physical Education boys do the five events which make up the Pentathlon, and his aggregate score is recorded. This is his Pentathlon score. A team to represent our school will be the five boys with the highest scores in each event. The team score is the aggregate for the five boys in perform- ing this particular event. All records are in feet of elevation and are accurately determined by the hand of the meter which is so calibrated. Bpys are encouraged to perform the operations in good form and long strokes, since it makes a higher score. Ten or more events can be measured by the Decathlon meter. However, we have chosen only five for the Pentathlon. Each measures different muscle groups. The K. H. S. Pentathlon Team is composed of: Iames McCork1e.f1oor dips 43 it. Gulp! It's Nourishin' THIIIS HIKIIIG CLUB Grub Time MY 500104, 1 TENTH ANNIVERSARY Ten glorious years have passed since the first group of Iunior Smoky Mountain hikers took their first mountain trail. People have come and gone, leaves have fallen and turned to dirt and then to leaves againp memories have been formed of com- radeship, unselfishness, fire-light, and the joy of rol- licking song. Ten years filled with the joy of youth and of the great out-of-doors have, needless to say, accumulated many traditions, lasting friendships, and a wealth of humor singular in itself. Some of those pioneering spirits are still seen around, and Whenever those who know and love Emblem Barefoot Boys the mountains are gathered, they can be found as full of enthusiasm as of those first hikes so many years ago. These people have remained in the fraternity of the great out-of-doors through love of nature, a gen- erous spirit, and genuine appreciation for the man- ner of those who share the trail with eager feet. At the head of all these is a hardy soul with endearing patience and animation so overflowing that our club has becorne the largest in the high school. IESSIE DEMPSTER.
