JOBE. VV. E. Evans, Principal Mr. W. E. Evans has proved himself a great leader as well as a true friend to every student and faculty member in Knoxville High School. In our spiritual and moral guidance during our high school years, he has been unsurpassed in thoughtfully steering us toward a more happy and .successful life. Qur respect for him goes deeper than his leadership. We respect him as an individual, one who has set him- self up as a living standard toward which we might strive. It would require a long and arduous search to find another man who demon- strates so great an interest and has such genuine concern over those with whom he is associated. We shall always admire and rememher W. E. Evans as a fine Christian gentleman and an ahle leader of youth. I . SAW! ZZ., Chairman, Forrest Andrews Superintendent, Thomas C. Prince i Left to right are: Graeme Canning, Hoyle Campbell, T. C. Prince, Forrest Andrews, E. L. Adcock, Dr. B. P. Oppenhimer and Dr. Iohn D. Moore. s 5 S. B. PARKER A teachers greatest accomplishment is the gaining of the respect anal affection of his stutlents. Mr. Parker has alone this consistently during the quarter of a century in which he has given faithful service at K. H. S. As he leaves K. H. S., may it he with the knowledge that our sincere love anal hest wishes will he with him always. We can always depend on Mr. Love to quide us and steady our Course when our tootina becomes unsure. Ever fair and just, to him is due utmost love and appreciation. ln the years to come We will remember his leadership and understanding-his sin- cerity and kindness in helping us face our many trying problems and tasks. TO THE CLASS OF 46-A As We, the class of 46-B take our leave of Knoxville High School, We think of the more industrious ot our number who already hold the coveted sheepskins. Although a regular mid-term class had not been planned, they realized the critical state of the World at the time, and endured long summer months of study in order to graduate in Ianuary. Though small in number, they were great in spirit, and they deserve the utmost commend- ation for their efforts. We, of the senior class, pause to reineinlver a clear frienal anal fel- low student who will never see the pages of this annual. We lzonor Curtis Reece, a friend, a gooal sport, and a swell fellow. For this reason the staff would like to consider themselves as trailblazers. Perhaps, this pioneer spirit accounts for the lack of finish that may be apparent in this publication. Admittedly, the going has been somewhat rough, but We, the staff have done what we could to give you the best annual under existing conditions. It is our fervent hope that this annual may aid you in some small way to recall pleasant memor- ies of Knoxville High School in the days to come. TOMMY HARRISON GEORGlA LEE WEAVER Editors . ' W ' 5'-5 Resume Of Games Though Middlesboro showed more drive, the Knoxville High Trojans came from behind to win in their first game of the season, at Mid- dlesboro, by a score of 7-6, After Cooper went around right end to reach pay dirt, Sanders caught a pass from Cooper to account for the winning extra point. Chatty Baker, who had just been discharged from the Marines, entered the game at the half, and helped put the Trojans over in the opener. The Blue and White boys made a marked improvement to gain their second victory of the season over the Wildcats by a score of 32-6. Captain Cooper broke the ice with the first touchdown in the lst quarter. The half ended with a l2-6 score, after Red Sanders had in- tercepted a pass and reached the end zone. Starting the second half, Cooper accounted for his 2nd touchdown in a powerful drive from the 310. The fourth Trojan score materialized when Red Baker plunged from the 2 yard line. Sanders kicked for the extra point. Tommy Bartlett scored the 5th Trojan touchdown and the extra point in a line-plunge was made by Cooper. Every- one of the Trojans gave a good account of him- self, and ythe subs showed great promise. Sonny Hale and his Elizabethton Cyclones were plenty good and it looked for a while like they might knock off the Trojans but the line dug in and held while the offense began to work with clock-like precision. Passes from Cap- tain W. C. Cooper to Red Sanders played a major part in the l4-l3 triumph for Knoxville High School, but the real hero was Bobby White who dropped Hale on the Trojan two yard li-ne on the last play of the game. After defeating Iohnson City 20-U, the Trojans made it the fourth straight victory of the season. Cooper, Slack, Baker, and Troutman were the mainstays in the backfield while Seiber and Pavlis took care of the line. The score at half- time was only 7-O, but the Trojans came back in the form of tornado and ended the game 20-U. Looking up to par again, the Trojans charged their way to a 33-6 victory over the Stair Tech Tigers. The first down tally showed the Trojan's superiority also, as our boys stacked up a dozen compared with the unhappy Tigers' 6. The first touchdown materialized when Tommy Slack went over Center. The first quarter ended 7-U after Cooper kicked for the extra point. Cooper also scored the second and third touchdowns with punts of 14 and 16 yards across the stripe. The fourth touchdown came in the third guarter when fleet Hymie Gordon twisted his way 86 yards on a punt return. Tommy Slack, proving Coach Cox's ability to make decisions correctly, plund- ered across, enabling the Blue and White boys to score in every period. Playing Rule before some 4,000 spectators, Knoxville High School chalked up another vic- tory l9-6. The first touchdown came quick in the first period and Bob Childress set up touchdown number two when he recovered a Rule fumble. Rule tallied their only touchdown in the second quarter. Although Red Sanders was injured in the second period, the Trojans came back in the last half and made the final touchdown, leaving the final score l9-6. IOE BLACK, 1946- Little Ice was cz quiet but explosive guard who could talk back to anybody and make them like it. 'DAVID PORTER, back-Old Porter was the quiet- est and most unheralded boy on the team cmd yet was a vital cog in the football machine. Dave played two years in the blocking back spot and could jolt the eye teeth out of a hippo, BILL MOORE, tackle-Red was a mighty mite at tackle and held his own against men nearly twice his size. Incideniully Kingsport was State Champion. BA KETBALL Under the able leadership of Coach Willard Martin the Trojan Basketball team won the eighth district tourney and downed two teams in the regional tournament to reach the semi-finals. Although the basketeers got off to a slow start the first of the season, they pulled through when it really counted in the tournament. After beating Rule, the outstanding dark horse in the tourney, they faced the seeded Farragut team and came out victorious. ln the finals, before l,l00 spec- tators, the Trojans downed a fighting Youngs team l6-l3. The tournament was considered to be the finest the eighth district has ever had. EIGHT!-I DISTRICT CHAMPS Many a Trojan fan will remember the night in October when cocky Elrod Cheatham and ,his Young High Yellow jackets turned back Knoxville High School by a 13-6 score, Knoxville High School hadn't been beaten since early in l943, but Cheatham and tParks ripped through the flu and the injured-riddled Trojan line with comparative ease. W. C. Cooper was without his star pass-catcher and couldn't get started on the ground but did score once on a short line buck. Playing the state champions on Kingsport'sg own field, the Trojans lost by 20-l3, a one touchdown margin. The score at half-time was 14-6. W, C. Cooper and Red Baker had set it up with a series of line smacks. Kingsport came back in the third quarter and made another tally, but not to be outdone, 'Captain W. C. Cooper went over with another marker for Knoxville High School, leaving the Trojans only one touchdown behind as the final whistle sounded. Bounding back from two defeats, the Trojans defeated Lee Edwards High of Asheville. The Trojans showed' great running power as they chalked up their seventh victory of the season, in a 27-0 score. The Maroons with a well drilled and fighting team gave the Asheville fans a thrill in the first minutes of the game by moving to the one yard line, when the Knoxville High School boys took over. Cooper, Slack, Gordon, and Bartlett racked one touchdown apiece, with Cooper scoring the extra points. Led by Tcrnmy Bartlett the Trojans out-classed the Morristown Hurricanes by a score of 26-0. The Hurricanes were in territory only twice throughout the entire game. Bartlett went through the center from the one yard stripe to account for the first Trojan score. Sanders kicked the placement. Bartlett again drove over from the fourth after Charlie johnson had set up the second score. The third score came in the second quarter when Bartlett passed to Seiber for six points. Sanders again kicked for the extra point. After Slack and Bartlett drove to the Hurricane's one foot line where Slack fumbled and Morristown re- covered, Bartlett passed to Saunders who stepped across the two striper. The final score, 7 to 7, does not tell the story of how a S-n-ller Knoxville High School line completely out charged the highly-touted Bobcat forewall, nor how miserably the famous Central passing failed, nor how lucky the favored Fountain Citians were to get away with a tie on the annual City-Central game on Shields-Watkins Field in l945. It was a spectacular 57 yard punt return by lack Beeler that put the Bobcats in scoring position. Central was inside the Trojan 20 yard line several times but the Trojan line was nearly impenetrable. Along with the great line play it was running and passing of Captin W. C. Cooper that brought the Trojan's score. Cooper plowed alone through the Central secondary to score, and then hit guard for the extra point. The entire team was outstanding in this moral victory. In a past season game, the Trojans were literally mauled by a gigantic Memphis Tech that certainly should have been state champions. Knoxville High was never even in the game and should be congratulated for holding the score down to 20-0. Running from the T-formation, Memphis' Everett Kook, Billy Cathey, and ex-convict Dutch Bauer ripped off big gains: time after time. The only consolation for the Trojans lies in the fact that the jackets were forced to punt many times-something they had done only three times during the entire season up to that time. Cadet Corps was organized in the Knoxville Public Schools the first of the school year of 1919 by Major Howell M. Estes, Professor of Military Science and Tactics, and Major Dyer, assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics. Commanding Officers since have been: Major Harry V. Stephenson, Co. R. R. Wood, Maj. E. C. Seeds, Lt. Col. john Moore, Capt. Keller Smith, and Major Robert V. Vaupel, the present Professor of Military Science and Tactics. In the three year course in high school l3t.O.T.C., the cadet receives in- struction in many fields. These include: Close order drill, tactics of war, mil- itary courtesy, health, discipline, and organization. Furthermore, the R.O.T.C. strives to instill in each cadet the soldierly virtues of teamwork, self-control, and leadership. The rifle marlismanship course gives all cadets an opportunity to develop proficiency in trigger squeeze, position, and slight alignment in rifle fire. Those who demonstrate unusual ability make up the Knoxville High School rifle team. The thoroughness and effectiveness of this training is proved by the fine record of the team this year. lt has won in several matches. with neighboring schools and organizations and placed second in the Fourth Service Command match. The school can well be proud of its fine rifle team, unquestionably one of the best in the south. This year the batallion, which comprises four commands, a staff, and a band, participated in the Armistice Day Parade and will give a formal review on the May Day Program. An important phase of student activity at Knoxville l-ligh School since its founding in l9l7-has been the lunior Red Cross. Under the supervision of Miss Allie Vaught, the lil-lS chapter, with a l00 per cent enrollment for the past three years, has done important work, local, national, and international. The outstanding achievement of the lunior Red Cross this year has been the adoption and maintenance of an eleven year old Dutch girl and a five year old French boy through the Foster Parent Plan. The student themselves contribute S30 monthly toward the support of these children. Also the Kl-lS chapter has sent 1905 pounds of clothing to France alone, l800 to Europe, and 298 to Russia. Over 2000 cans of food have been contributed for the food drive for European peoples. A great deal of work has been done by the KHS lunior Red Cross for soldiers and vet- erans. Many items have been sent to veteran hospitals and canteens including 100 pairs of mules, 200 overseas bags, made by the Home Economics department under the supervision of Miss Guerrant Tatem, l50 toothbrushes for handiwork, etc. for recuperating veterans. To the canteens have been sent cookies, magazines, comic books, playing cards, and other gifts for soldiers. The Art Department, under Miss Virginia Parker's supervision, has made Christ- mas, Mother's Day, and Easter Cards, among other items, for veterans in hospitals. On the local scene the lunior Red Cross has not been negligent, but has been one of the active agencies in Knoxville doing charitable work. Especially at Thanksgiving and Christ- mas has this been true when baskets of food were distributed to the needy, and when Christ- mas stockings were filled and distributed to nursery school children, and presents were sent to the local Bed Cross Canteen for soldiers. At this time, the chapter packed and sent Christ- mas boxes overseas from all the city schools. Salvage drives were an important work of the Red Cross during the war, but even in this past year of peace, it has collected five tons of paper and eleven barrels of tin. The let- down in the spirit of giving which resulted after the war little affected the group at KHS this year. A complete list of all the work and activities of the lunior Red Cross here would require too much space, but by this brief summary one can easily see the wonderful job being done by this group, and what a great showing they are making for Knoxville High School. omior 10055 Y r MISS ALLIE VAUGHT 1 Supervise: CHESTER WOOD FRANCES MCQUEEN Vice-President, Spring 1946 President. Under the able leadership of Miss Iessie Dempster, enrollment has claimbed by leaps and bounds from the original number of 82 to 300 members, making it the largest club at high school. Before the war, members rode to the mountains in trucks, paying a fixed rate for each trip. Due to inability of obtaining transportation facilities during the war, however, mountain hikes Were discontinued. and members hiked in and near town. Cessation of hostilities finds the Smoky Mountaineers eagerly tramping mountain trails again, and in such greater number than before that Trailways buses have to be used to convey them all back and forth. f S ,sc W . , r t t s t N ,7-. :qw , X .qf x 1' gn, 1 ' ' x Z' N 5 ,1- ,- gfvfo, ,' X 4: ,iq XXX XX , ,RRS . :fy xgf.
