Hzstory of the Class of 22 i At last through the sorrows and pleasures, the toil and duties we now, after four long, yet happy years, can give with inward satisfaction, thc definition of a senior- One who knows and knows that he knows. Wllell we started upon our High School career as a Freshman, we were given the definition of that lowly and much despised llass, or Fish, as we were then called. We were told that a Freshman was ne who knows not, and knows not that he knows not. In this first year of toil and delusion, we were introduced to the snares and pitfalls of Latin and Algebra and were forced to forget ourselves and study Physiology, or the function of human organs. Then, after we had passed, what seemed to us, insurmountable barriers, we entered upon our Sophomore year. Here we were made to forget thc present world and live in the world gone by. History they called it. All through our second year we struggled loyally with Caesar and here too, we became murderers, killing and diseeting the innocent worms and hugs, trying to learn something of Biology. Then came our triumphant entrance into the Junior Class and here again, we heard the definition. lt seemed that the words would follow us to our graves, but we listened with fast beating hearts only to be told that a Junior is One who knows and knows not that he knows. ln this year we struggled bravely and were not so easily discouraged by Cicero in his speeches Ad Senatunn llomanumn, or by the funny squares and circles of Geometry as we had been by Caesar's campaigns against the Gauls and X's and Y is of Algebra. Now at last we entered our final year at dear old K. ll. S. A Senior! W'hat name sounds more thrilling to our ears, or more dignified to our minds? Not even the tangles of Latin, French and Spanish, nor the many themes in English, can dannt our courage, for no one can dispute opinions of a Senior, 'tWho k11ows and knows that he knows. Witli such a store of knowledge as we have acquired and above all, with a diploma with the seal of the .Knoxville City Schools placed upon it, show us worlds we cannot conquer and tasks we cannot do, for then surely we can prove our valor and knowledge which our beloved teachers have done their best to impart to us during these years. We have fought bravely through our eleven years of school life and with an undaunted spirit we can hold our heads high and go forth, into our future life the better man the better woman to face the ordeals of this cruel unfor- 7 7 7 7 giving world. l 1 -William Bonldin, Class Ilfistoria-n. 12 I . -I I xvff ' -' - ' 'Sxfff 'ff -' I E ff 1-. Tigers, thc whole team, both regulars and substitutes, began practicing like demons. This was the last game of the season and not, only that, but it was the game which would decide the championship of East Tennessee. The last afternoon before the game, the coach put the High School lads through a severe test in order to make a final selection ofthe men most likely to win the game and the championship. Although this was a secret practice, a 'Few people observed it, unknown to the coach. One of these spectators was llogan. the well known gambler. He was also putting the boys through a severe test, within' himself, to find out the strongest point and try to bribe that player into throwing the game. This game had caused considerable stir among the gamblers of the city and many wagers had been placed on the outcome of it. Hogan iinally arrived at a decision regarding the player to whom he should offer the bribe. 'Ile waited until the practice was over and the boys had come out on the street. llc nodded to Jim Monroe, the best goal artist. on the High School team. llogan, who was a shrewd judge of human nature, made a few preliminary remarks about thc money shortage and how nice certain things every lligh School boy enjoys, would be. Monroe, unconscious of what llogan was about to propose, listened eagerly. At the right moment, Hogan put out the bait, suggesting that it might be worth. while for Monroe to feel ill the following night and be out of the game, or better still, to be off his form at goal shooting. -lim was so amazed that he could not answer. He attempted to refuse, but Hogan interposed and handed him fifty dollars. Think it over, lad 5 if the game goes our way, the money is yours. If you de- cide not. to take me up, send the money back by three P. M. tomorrow. G-ood bye.'l He was gone before Monroe could remonstrate. T hate to do an undcrhand trick, but fifty 'bucks' look mighty good , mused Jimmy. The sole topic of conversation at the Monroe 's that evening was the coming game. At the supper table Jinmiy discussed the game and the probable outcome with his father, who had been in his day, quite a cage artist himself. Hewas proud of the fact that his son was going to represent the High School. Play a clean game, son, win or lose. Remember that it never pays to do dirty work. Ulean sportsmanship has always been the motto of your Dad, and l hope you show the same spirit on the court. Also remember your mother and I will be watching with intense interest, the progress of the game. D0 yourself credit, my boy, and do your Dad credit. Jimmy Hushed, but nodded assent. Hogan went back smilingly, to the pool-room where most of the gamblers loitered. Alle told them that hc expected to have a sure bet for them tomorrow and he would know by three o'clock. Three o'clock the next day found him impatiently pacing up and down in front of the soda fountain which was in front of the hall. At one minute past he smiled confidently and called the gang to him. Go strong, boys. This is a sure thing, I have the star player 'tixcd' and the 'Tigers' are bound to win. ' 69 l'C0l l-S0 se d il . 0 ill a .gl 1 J, 1 1 v W ' I Eff' -f- THE I --- hw' He did not for a moment consider that Monroe would double cross him. That was out of the question. No more than he suspected Jimmy of double- crossing him, did the Gang stop to question the authenticity of his tip. Hogan had the full confidence of all the gamblersg his was the honor which is supposed to exist among thieves. They wagered everything, even coats and hats, expecting to Mclean up on this tip. The night and hour of the game came. The crowd cheered madly as the teams came onto the court- lt yelled itself hoarse. The re'Ecree's whistle blew and the game was on. lt was evident from the beginning that it would be a close contest and that the winner would have only a small margin of points. Minute after minute passed. The gamblers became restless. Two minutes be- fore the final whistle the score stood twelve-twelve. A player called time. Play was resumed and the ball came into High Schools possession. Ficreely the struggle waged for the ball which meant almost certain victory. The man who managed to get a shot for goal in that crisis would not take any chances. He would make it sure. And Jimmy Monroe came out from the tangle with the coveted sphere in his possession. Like lightning he drihbled into favorable position and before the esteemed Hogan could erase the smile from his face, the ball fell through the cage for a goal and-the championship! The shrill whistle of the referee was heard above the bedlam which broke loose as the ball fell to the floor. Hogan gritted his teeth and waited with the utmost impatience for -Timmy Monroe. At last Monroe came out, surrounded by a crowd of boys. Hogan beckoned him to one side. Jimmy glanced up in surprise- What is it? Hogan could scarcely believe his senses. Wl1at is it?', he exclaimed. VVhat would it naturally be? lt is simply tlnsg what do you mean by double-crossing me? Double-crossing you 'X I do not understand what you mean- T-- T mean broke in :Hogan that you aceeted my money and then did all 7 1 7 s 1 you could to win that game ! O, I see, replied Jimmy with a smile, the real truth beginning to dawn upon him, You failed to receive the money. I sent it back at seven o'elock last night, just after talking with father. Hogan was purple with rage and was about to inquire by whom the money was sent, but before he could utter the words, a ma11 came toward him. Hlllr. Hogan, Mr. Hogan, here is a note for you. lt was given to me last night but I forgot to mention it. Excuse me, Mr. Hogan, said J imrny as he again edged toward the crowd which was eagerly awaiting his return. You and the other gentleman can settle the matter. A 4 w 11 , - ,O ge r so world, and Nature, allowed to take hcr course, has set the world upright. Napoleon, custodian of St. Helena attempted to conquer the world and failed. And after the turmoil caused by Bonaparte Nature soon regained her feet. ' Nero, the ambitious, cold natnred villain of old, tried on a small scale Chundred and fifty pounds capacityj to conquer the world and failed. Again from out the turmoil Nature rose triumphant. But there was one thing one must say for Nero and that was that he was a good sportsman. lle attempted to corner the fiddle market in his home town and if he hadn't invested too heavily in advertising he might have succeeded. VVhen our country was in its infancy, it was rumored, there were bad men roaming about the valleys between 'Denver and San Francisco. I do not have in mind the wax mustaehed. sleek haired villain of the soap box, the so called patent medicine vendor with a bottle for sale containing a cure for-croup, measles. nnnnps, hiccnps, sunburn, and freeklesg a wonderful hair tonic, rust. remover and stove polish- Small size bottle, la-dees and gen-tle-men, with this wonderful good luck ring, four packages of garden seed and this exquisite overbearing century plant, all for twenty-five cents. You know the kind for it is not yet extinct. l shall not be so unfair to the villain of this story as to form such an association. These bad men were the hair-trigger kind who carried a man 's revolver on his hip. Said ba.d men became very expert with said guns. I say said guns because it was by means of their old trusty fowling pieces that they did most of their talking. Some of these men became so expert that they could actually be called tlncnt. Upon the handle of their gun they would always carve a notch for each victim of their sarcasm. Naturally the handle would not al- ways hold all of the notches, so the overflowing ones were carved on a nearby tree. Naturally an appeal would be made to the sheriff, but the sheriff was influenced by politics, his hands were tied. he could do nothing, he believed in letting the law take its own course. The sheriff was the most unpopular man in the story. He really became so unpopular with the reader that if he were living now, he couldn 't run for constable. But nature brought it around all right. The sheriff and the had men, filled with emotions by the western sunsets became honest, upright, law abiding citizens and bought a department store at Powder Fork. Witli the closing of the school term, the military training has come to the fore as one of the most important departments in our institut.ion. Under the excellent supervision of the Professor of Military Science and Tactics, Major Howell M. Estes, the R. O. T. C. here has bee11 in a continual state of improve- ment. The personal bearing of the cadets has been greatly improved through- out the battalion and the cadets not only carry themselves well at drill but they also take pride in their carriage outside of drill. Our corps of instructors consists of the lXlajor's assistantsg namel y, Sgts. Luther Ward, Walter I-Iuskey, Samuel Frazier and Willia1'i1 Pratt, all of whom have done commendable work and have been a great asset to the Corps of Cadets. At the' close of this term a competitive drill will be held as has been here- tofore. The companies will compete and also the individual cadets will have a drill down for the honor of receiving t.he Hlirlorgan Medal. There has been instituted the practice of having examinations at the close of the school term which each cadet and officer is required to take, therefore they are compelled to keep posted on the drill regulations. THE R. O. T. C. BAND After considering the organization of a band in K. H. S. the question of securing the money was raised. lt was finally decided to let the companies contribute to the fund and also for the Hi-Y Club to go out among the business men of the city and raise the money by popular subscription. A considerable amount was raised by these methods but later the students them- selves raised some money and with the money donated by the Senior Class, Athletic Club, and the Hi-Y Club, there was enough money to finance the band. The instruments were procured and Mr. Crouch was selected as instructor, and practice was begun. Soon music was heard instead of noise and one day at Chapel Mr. Evans presented the K. H. S. band formally to the students. A great deal of appreciation is due Mr. Crouch who has spared no effort to make the band a success, also the members of the band should be praised on account of their efficient work. 94 X l . . These three organizations have had a membership of seventy-seven during the vefir the Boys Glce Club having enrolled thirty-six and the Girls' Glee Club forty one The Chorus is made up of the combined clubs. Each of these oiganizations has been heard a number of times at chapel and the work has been enjoyed and appreciated. Due to the lmuted time prov ided for rehearsal the Music Clubs of the High bchool have been found to confine their efforts to the preparation. of the above pei tormances, but han enjoyed this work and have also had a share in promot- ing Music Apprem IRUOII work done in the school. The Boys Glee C lub undu the direction of S. lloyd li,?t1'li0l', have devoted tlu I1 time to music, especially suitc cl to boys' voices. Their happy response to thc sentiment expressed ln school songs and their earnest efforts on a few more difficult selections have made the work of the year well worth while. hlrs May Holliday has duected the work of the Girls' Glee Cllub. This Chorus is the largest musical or- ,franivation in the school and enioys a splendid reputation. Splendid voices are found in the chorus and the singing of the chorus as afwbole and the solo parts by a number of the members show faithful study and effort. The progi am rendered at the Annual Musical, the greater part of which vas the work of the tlnee clubs named above, proved to be a pleasant eveninghs enyoyment for all piesent It will be recalled that these organizations help- ed to provide the music foi C,onnneneemeut 1921 and will do so again this year. IIOUSEUOLDER The Commercial Club has been one of the most successful clubs of the school this year. Under the supervision of the faculty advisor, Miss Mary Ellen Champe, many profitable things have been accomplished. The Commercial Department has grown very much in the last two 01' three years. From the forty to fifty students who did take commercial work the number has grown to about one hundred and flfty. We now have in the commercial department all subjects that will benefit any student wishing to take a position when he has iinished the High School course. But we. the Commercial Club of 1922, are only beginning our great work in the business world and are gradually pressing onward toward a higher and better goal. We have worked faithfully and patiently at our task and we hope that the good interest shown in our classes will never cease but will be carried on as the ocean waves by the other members of the club. and that they will ever strive to encourage and please Miss Champe, our good and loyal teacher to whom our success is greatly due.
