4 A notably fine job was done by Mr. Kessler, the new principal, during his first year here at K.H.S. Being a new member of the faculty, he spent a large share of his free time merely getting acquainted with K.H.S. students and teachers. He attended a great number of class meetings, making many useful sug- gestions to aid the students and class sponsors. Before Mr. Kessler accepted the ofiice of princi- pal at K.H.S., he taught general business and social science at Gilman, Illinois, and assisted the superin- tendent with his work. Mr. Kessler earned his B.S. and M.Ed. degrees at the Universities of Illinois and Southern Illinois. Miles Ames Principal Dean W. 1 Baaacl of gclucczlian. l Q Q.. Row I: Vorace Larson, Julius Block, James Paulsgrove. Row 2: George England, William Corbin, Mrs. Richard Goff, Ralph Gullel. Pictured above are the members of the 1958-59 Board of Education of Community Unit District 202. Julius W. Block finished his second year as president of the group, while James W. Paulsgrove again served as secretary. Representatives from various parts of the dis- trict, including Haw Creek, Persifer and Knox Townships, and East Galesburg, served the board also. Among the several important items discussed and acted upon were building new elementary schools and fire inspections of structures in the district. Because enrollment, in addition to the num- ber of courses offered, has largely increased, a great many consequent problems were faced by all members of local school administrative bodies and olficial educational supervisors everywhere. The issues of consideration, as always, held much responsibility and contro- versy. Operation of the public scl1ool's system depends upon the state, which in turn delegates authority to the local boards. District 202 worked diligently for the cause of good educa- tion, acting according to existing conditions. Supl. J. S. Spencer Regrettably, Mr. Spencer wasnt seen as much this year as in the previous years when he was principal here at Knoxville High. As the new superintendent of schools in the 202 district, he undertook and accomplished many new and impor- tant jobs during his third year with the faculty of K.H.S. Having earned B.S.Ed. and M.Ed. degrees from the University of Missouri, Nlr. Spencer first came to Knoxville in the fall of 1956. During the two years that followed he, being both principal of K.H.S. and Student Council advisor, made many friends and acquaintances among the students attending Knoxville High, as well as their parents and the teachers. lO
