It is standing in line anxiously waiting to enjoy the best cuisine from the cafeteria, or the College Crib. It is eating that repast with your best friends and in- considerately leaving your tray on the table for someone else to remove. It is shooting a game of pool with Brothers in the Student Center Recreation Room or conversing around a card table with Sisters, about other Sisters, be- fore that next class begins. lt is associating with people in panhellinic organizations, right down to walking on your hands while your Brother lends you two helping hands to support your feet. .rg . lr it c I' . 1-rim r l N i l llflll l 'ff-wi... W f N A yearbook seems important when you first get it - right off the press. But yearbooks are among those few things that improve with age. This yearbook will seem more important, and it will have increased in value, five years, ten years, or twenty years from now when you take it off the shelf and see again the faces of old college friends . . . re-live your college days in memory. It is difficult to view today's happenings in the perspective of time. But the fact is that what you do in the short time that you are on the campus will shape all your future memories of college days. Those of you who became active in Knoxville College life in 1970 have an un- precedented opportunity to build a particularly rich fund of college memories. For that is the year the college surged ahead in many aspects. Enrollment jumped from 885 to 1301. The faculty was improved in quantity and quality. The curric- ulum was changed along more progressive academic lines. And yet, with all the improvements that marked the new era for the college, the Swinging Seventies, as the Homecoming theme had it, we all know that there are many more improvements that need to be made. This fact, perhaps, provides your greatest opportunity to build really vital memories of your college days. For you can be instrumental in the progress of the college. - An individual citizen in our huge democracy often wonders what one person can do to improve the country, and an individual student, even in a small college, may well be assailed by the same doubts. But remember that the great forward strides always originate in one individual's mind. From there, he must communicate, he must organize, and he must persevere in working toward his end. A little verse l learned as a child has helped me through many discouraging moments. l'd like to share it with you: lam only one. But still lam one. lcannot do everything. And because l cannot do everything l will not refuse to do The something that l can do. With that thought, l'd like to add my wish that your college days will be happy, productive, and significant. I hope this yearbook will bring you years of pleasant memories. Robert L. Owens, lll President K J 19 NX Administration Mrs. Mozelle Robinson Dean of Students Dr. Robert S.
