A Dainty Plant is the lvy Breen Oh, render leaves of ivy, Turning upward to the sky, How your vines, they twist and toil, To reach some goal on high. Rich, green, and glossy surfaces Washed from soil by summery rain, By the sunshine flooded daily, Never showing hurt or pain. Not once do you falter, Nor turn backward to the earth, But retain the perseverance, Instilled in you at birth. HMIHHUH EL 55 Ancient Mirror, Unmoved, untroubled by the tortured face of Time Who reins in his tired sweating horse To pause and gaze into your depths Only briellyf Then moves on, Leaving the wreckage of mortal dreams, The shining towers, The fruitless struggles of the demagogues, The message of the saints Upon the shoulders of the rising years. The sun stabs into your blue-black current In itidescent blades, Leaps back into the boundless heavens In silvery glitter, The wind is soft along the invisible strings Of some gigantic instrument of Spring: Around you stand the heavy-shouldered hills Like sombre armored cuirassiers That watch with eyes a thousand centuries old The flames of gutted cities Reflected, orange in the western sky.
