USS KNOX (FF 1052) CREST The crest is divided into two halves, each representing one of Commodore Dudley W. Knox ' s distinguished careers. The broad gold band which spans the top of the crest signifies his rank of Commodore, U.S. Navy, while the gold star on a field of blue commemorates his career as a seagoing line officer. The crossed quill and sword on white in the lower half represents Commodore Knox ' s later achievements as a naval scholar and historian.
