HISTORY OF USS KNOX DE-1052 USS KNOX (DE-1052) is the lead ship of a new class of 46 ocean escorts specially designed for locating and destroying enemy submarines. KNOX was built by Todd Shipyards Corporation, Seattle, Washington and commissioned 12 April 1969 in Bremerten, Washington. Ships of this type have many traits of the swift and deadly destroyer. The newest and longest range underwater sound detection equip- ment (SONAR) in the Navy today enables KNOX to operate independently in locating and tracking hostile submarine forces or to be an extremely effective team member of an anti-submarine protective force for a Navy task force or mer- chant convoy. Like the destroyer, KNOX is very capable on missions of rescue, patrol, evacuation, blockade, and visit-and-search. The principal armament is the anti-submarine homing torpedo which can be delivered to an enemy submarine miles away by the anti-submarine rocket (ASROC) or launched from four conventional above water torpedo tubes. The 5 inch 54 cali- ber gun is an effective shore bombardment weapon used in support of military operations inland or against hostile air or surface craft. Space provisions have been made for the addi- tion of manned helicopters, an Independent Variable Depth Sonar (IVDS), and the Point Defense Missile System in the future. After commissioning KNOX participated in a variety of tests and trails in Puget Sound, Long Beach, California. These trails were designed to test this new class of ship ' s resist- ance to underwater shock under simulated battle conditions. In March, 1971 KNOX completed the first overseas deployment of her class when she returned from six months in the Western Pacific as a member of the SEVENTH Fleet. During exercises near New Zealand with ships of the British, Australian, and New Zealand Navies, KNOX demonstrated her effectiveness against air, surface, and sub-surface targets. Employed primarily as an escort for cruisers and aircraft carriers in the South China Sea area, KNOX has now successfully completed her second deployment with the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet. Manned by 17 officers and 227 enlisted men, KNOX has the speed and mobility to meet the requirements placed upon a versatile ship of the line. A member of the Cruiser -Destroyer Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, KNOX is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii with Destroyer Squadron ELEVEN.
