iJ . CBk mDimG COMMANDER N.C. ROBERTS, USN Commander ROBERTS attended the U.S. Naval Academy and started his career as a Commissioned Naval Officer in 1956. His initial duty assignment was to place the USS LESTER in commission as Communications and CIC Officer. From there he went to the big gun cruisers TOLEDO andLOS ANGELES. After a year at post graduate schooling at Monterey, he returned to the Naval Academy as an instruc- tor. During this period he obtained a degree in Personnel Administration from George Wash- ington University. In 1964 LT ROBERTS assumed command of the USS MATTABESSET, during which time he was promoted to lieutenant commander. In 1966 he returned to the Destroyer Force as Executive Officer, USS O ' HARE. Following duty with the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washing- ton, D.C., he served as the Surface Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander U.S. SIXTH Fleet. It is from this duty that Commander ROBERTS came to the USS KNOX as Com- manding Officer.

FORMER COMMANDING OFFICER COMMANDER E.W. HAYS Commander HAYS attended the U.S. Naval Academy and accepted his commission as Ensign in 1953. Commander HAYS has had a significant portion of duty assignments in the Pacific com- mencing with the USS MENIFEE (APA-202) during the Korean conflict and with KNOX on her first and a portion of her second deploy- ments to WESTPAC. Other tours included Oper- ations Officer, USS RAYMOND, Missile Officer, USS TOPKEA, Weapons Officer, USS HOLE, and most recent shipboard tours, as Executive Officer, USS COONTZ DLG-9 and Commanding Officer USS WILHOITE DER-397. During the time set aside as shore duty, Commander HAYS was a student at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey. After a tour of teaching at Annapolis he was assigned to Naval Ordnance System Command Headquar- ters in Washington, D.C. It is from this duty that Commander HAYS came to KNOX. Upon being relieved by Commander ROBERTS, Commander HAYS reported to his new duty assignment with Staff of Commander FIRST Fleet. The men of KNOX bid Commander HAYS a Bon Voyage.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER LIEUTENANT COMMANDER M.E. FITZGERALD Lieutenant Commander Fitzgerald attended the U.S. Naval Academy and received his com- mission in June 1959. His initial tour was aboard the USS J. P. KENNEDY where he served as R Division Offi- cer, Electronics Material Officer and CIC Offi- cer. He was then transferred to the USS SAMP- SON as Communications Officer. In 1962 he attended school as Prospective CIC Officer for the commissioning of the USS BARNEY. From 1963-1965 he was assigned as Officer in Charge, Systems Qualifications Acceptance Trails at the Naval Ships Missile Systems Engineering Sta- tion, Port Hue neme, Calif. His next tour was Weapons Officer, USS CLAUDE RICKETTS. From 1968 to 1970 Lieutentant Commander Fitzgerald attended Postgraduate School at Mon- terey. It is from this duty that he reported to USS KNOX at Executive Officer.
