Next on our school calendar are the Iowa tests for the freshman and juniors. Two full days are spent by these students taking tests of various types. In the picture are Carolyn Jessup, Sudy Beavers, Leo Ware, and Phil Flack. At various times convocations are held for the student body. The speech department has charge of these programs. In the picture Lana Ewing is presiding over the Thanksgiving Convocation. One of the main activities at Christmas time is the window painting contest. Situ- dents in the art classes paint various win- dows in the building. These are then judged and the winners are awarded a prize. In the pictures Miss McKinney, the instructor, congratulates this year's winners, Doug Fer- guson, Paul O'Mally, Phil Flack, Jim Mun- den. FIRST ROW, Jim Sharp and James r. S walke The Galaxy dance was a highlight of the events early on the school calendar. This was given as a finale to the yearbook sub- scription drive which was a gre at success. The total number of yearbooks sold was 583. In the picture are the Galaxy king and queen and their court. STANDING, Betty Jolly, Junior Maloyed, Barbara Smith, Duane Stoots, Tommy Ware, and Roberta Winchester. SEATED are the king and queen, Terry Clark and Linda Cross. 5 1 2 600 X0 A typical scene at speech contest is this one as the contestants view the score sheets, posted after each round. A first gives a student a great thrill especially in district, zone, or state contests. Sports hold a prominent place on the school calendar but with the enjoyment comes hard work. ln the picture are Ronny Ballenger, Danny Vaughn, and Laddie Roland practicing basketball. Early spring me ans new designs and the home ec. department surely does its share to introduce them to the community. Each spring a style show is produced in which every girl models the dress or costumes she had made in home ec. that year. 1 ilt w ' bl. i V , 'iii if? V V The Kennard Sixth grades chose The Growth of Bac- teria as their project for the exhibit. The choice grew from the study of three chapters on bacteria in their health book. In study they viewed some films on bacteria--both useful and harmful. Mrs. Ratzla.ff's room set up an exhibit showing how useful bacteria can change sweet milk into cottage cheese and how harmful bacteria will cause bread to mold. Mr. Hartley's room made a graph chart showing the relationship between temperature and bacteria growth. Both rooms enjoyed the project very much. Another was used to show how mold is made into penicillin. The children felt they had a part in something im- portant and worthwhile. They began to realize the importance of taking precautionary measures against infectious organisms. Miss McShirley's sixth grade class made posters and scrapbooks on Sanitation and Community Health. The idea for the project came from their work in health class. The children were divided into com- mittees with a chairman appointed for each one. The idea that their part of the exhibit might be sent to Indianapolis inspired the children to do very good work. Rockets to Good Health was the theme selected for the Health Exhibit held in Indianapolis dLu'ing Teachers' Association. The following teachers were on the general planning committee: Joan Derrickson, Myrtle Hamm, Lucile Mettel, Crystal McShurley, Mabel Weimer, Hulda Baughn, co-chairman, Mildred Dowell, Chairman, and Earl Poer, Principal. The chairman for each grade is as follows. 1. Geneva Bales, 2. Alice Walker, 3. Helen Farthing, 4. Jeanette Coffin, 5. Viva Messick, 6. Herald Hartley. All exhibits were brought to the school cafeteria in the Knightstown Elementary Building on October 21, where an open house was held so the public could see this interesting and out- standing achievement. On October 23 and 24, at Tech High School in Indianapolis, where members of the Indiana Teachers' Association could see it, these pro- jects were put on exhibit. The health exhibit was one of the most impor- tant activities of the Elementary Schools. The children of each room worked hard to make their exhibit the best. They learned to work together toward a central purpose. ROW FOUR: Jim Garrett, Jim Griffin, Pete Kemerely, John Pidgeon, Tom Ware, and Mr. Darling, coach. 'ss 47 The members of our second team are the members of tomorrow's varsity. These boys have a larger responsibility than is realized against the varsity, therefore the harder the reserves work the harder the varsity must work in perfecting their play. FIRST ROW: Larry Fowler, Stephen Farthing, Rickie Sweigart, Jim Sharp, and Rick Forst. Znd. ROW: Laddie Roland, Larry Howell, Duane Stoots, and Evan Mattix, Mgr. 3rd ROW: Mr. Derrickson, coach, Mike Scott, Bob Kegerreis, John Pidgeon and Harrison Parker. 7 This year the junior high team has won the Middletown invitational tourney champions. The boys are working together as a team and are on their way to an undefeated season as they have won ten games thus far. ROW ONE: Mike Wells, Charles Allen, Gary Black, and Phil Butler. ROW TWO: Danny Florea, David Brooks, Donnie Young, Mike M'Donald, and David Steele. ROW THREE: Jim Garrett, mgr., David Stearns, Keith Stewart, Pat Chase, Teddy Henderson, Don Hopkins, Danny Jessop, and Mr. Darling, coach. Our track team is at a disadvantage this year because we do not have a track. The boys' training consists of running around the gymnasium, running around the school yard, and putting the shot in the school yard. Even though the track facilities of the school are not adequate, we have had a better than average track team the past few years. Last year the team placed high in the conference meet. The members of the track team are as follows: ROW 1: Harrison Parker and Evan Mattix, co-assistant managersg Doug Reeves, managerg Bill Taylor. ROW 2: Mr. Derrickson, coachg Ed. Jacksong Jack Averyg Danny Vaughn. 6405 Jack Avery and Bill Taylor Ed Jackson and Dan Vaughn 11? Our school has two baseball seasons, one in the spring and one in the fall. In the spring we have scheduled better and more teams, while in the fall we play smaller schools. This type of scheduling is done so that in the fall when many upperclassmen are ninning cross-country to pre- pare for basketball, the under- classmen can receive valuable experience, which will make them better ball players in the future. ln this way we al- ways have capable replace- ments when our seniors graduate.
