Athletic Banquet Basketball letter winners: Thea Dybvik, Jackie Nadon, Christine Forney, Christine Batchelor, Phyllis Moss, Rayetta Clayton, Kristina Niemelin, Nora Wall, Diane Johnson, Manager. 1 to r. Mr. Turner, football coach; Fred Broberg, trophy win¬ ner for football; Ron Ford, trophy winner for basketball; Mr. Herbst, basketball coach. Look for a Star was the theme of the annual athletic awards banquet, sponsored by the Loggerettes The banquet was held on March 31 in the high school gym. Mr. Dewey James, Knappa grade school principal was master of ceremonies. Mr. James began the evening by calling on Christine Batchelor, president of the Loggerettes, for opening remarks, and on Phyliss Moss for the invocation. After the dinner, entertainment was provided by Dolla Minkoff with a dance routine, and by folk singers Dan Heikkila and Judy and Marlie Stearn who sang two songs. Guest speaker was Ervin Garrison, former coach at Knappa. Highest honor, that of winning the Heilmann Most Inspirational Player trophy, went to Fred Broberg for football and Ron Ford for basketball. A Most Inspirational Girl Player trophy was given this year for the first time. The trophy was presented to Christine Batchelor. 20

BACK ROW: Harold Salo, Fred Kor- honen, Carl Salo, Kevin Ryon, Gary Kent, Heikki Ylipelto- cap tain; Steve Gerttula, Bob Hammond, Nip Hum- masti. Coach Mr. George Winning 11 of its 12 games, Knappa's baseball team, coached by Mr. Archie George, became the year's District Champs. In the quarter-finals game at Stayton for state competition, Knappa lost to Regis 3-0. Kevin Ryon received the batting trophy with a season average of . 484. Nip Hummasti was second lead¬ ing batter with a . 400 average. Hummasti, who was the top pitcher with a record of 5-1, distinguished himself this season when he threw i a no-hit game. 19
