The 9 demons were: Graydon Barz, Terry Koerner, Gordon Lemke, Joan Lemke, Adeline Medaus, Carole Ann Montgomery, Melvin Alan Neuberger, Donald Thiemann, and Merlyn Olson. Miss Virgie Hardcoff was our teacher an Mr. John Micklick was superintendent. The kindergarteners the year before had been lucky and only had to go to school half a day but as you will see our class was always the unfortunate one and had to go all day. We sat on chairs around a big table and had fun scribbling instead of coloring our pictures. The one highlight of this year was when someone had a birthday. When this occasion arrived we all got pictures of a birthday cake to color. We really had some outrageous cakes. This was really a year for us. We learned many things but caught more. I think we had all the diseases there were to be had. Our school picnic was May 14, and we were ready for first grade, a rung higher on the ladder to success. On August 30, 1943, we began our second year of crime in Klemme School with eleven pupils. Our teacher was Miss Arlene Bugh, and Phyliss Sherrill was our music teacher. This year we helped put on the musical show Olde Folke Concerte. When school began again we were minus Gordon Lemke, Shortly after Joan Lemke moved, and we gained a new student, Bennie Harms, who stayed for 6 weeks. This year for Valentine's Day we did something new. We made a post office where each student had his own box in which he received his Valentines. On May 16, the school picnic was held and everyone welcomed the summer vacation. In the second grade, which started on Monday, September 4, 1944, Miss Bugh was to be our teacher again, although I don't see how she could take it another year. We only have 9 students in our class this year. Except for enjoying a day of vacation on V.E. day May 8, 1945, nothing spectacular happened and we advanced to third grade on May 18. On September 3, 1945, we began third grade with a new teacher and in a new room. Our new teacher was Miss Mary Jane Holm. The school acquired some new busses, and we gained some new students, Cecil Jacobs, Lois Boland, Gary Day, Dick Dulmes, Joan Lemke, Marlys Marshall, and Faye Janssen. Margaret Medaus joined us for 1 six weeks and then left us. At the end of the year we lost another student, Lyle Heginger. This year we had parts in the operetta Lazy Town which was post- poned for a short time because of an epidemic of the flu. This year the annual picnic was held on May 23 in the gym, a new experience for us. Our fourth year we obtained a new teacher. Her name was Miss Ruth Heinrich. This year we had two new students, Gerry Kastler and Donald Kramer, bringing our total enrollment up to 16. We were happy this year because of all the snow vacation we had. On March 25 we helped present the operetta The Obliging Clock. April 10 we all got a thrill out of going to Kanawha to the show, which was Pinocchio. We also marched in the Health Parade at Britt this year. Gary Day and Marlys Marshall left us. May 23 was our annual picnic and we were ready for 5th grade. Our 5th grade year started off with a new teacher and a new room. Our teacher was Mrs. Wayne Schlawin. We began the year with 15 students of which 3 were new. They were Lee Gruis, Beverly De Merritt, and Vernon Larson. We began school by organizing a science club called Bee Wee 31. We all worked hard trying to catch bugs to bring to school this year. We also held a party for our mothers this year. A skit was presented, and we displayed all the things we had worked on during the year. On May 7 we grades presented our operetta named Midsummer Night's Dream. Mrs. Pat Paterson directed it, and it was a great success. Again this year we attended the Health Parade at Brittg it was held on May 8. Before we could attend though every- one had to have their teeth checked and bring back their dental cards. We enjoyed our first skating party at Bayside this year, and we looked forward to more. School ended on May 21 with everybody happily awaiting the vacation months ahead. We began 6th grade on August 30, 1948, with 15 students. Our teacher was still Mrs. Wayne Schlawin. Merlyn Olson and Sharon Reed joined our class this year. We attended the annual Health Day again this year. The year ended with the picnic on May 20. When seventh grade started on August 29, 1949, we had 4 new students to bring our total enrollment up to 18. They were Thomas Shoop, Blanche Shoop. John M. Stevens, and Neil Mannetter. We were now considered Junior High students andjoined the basketball team. We did pretty well too for our first year. We won 6 games and lost 3. We hadanew teacher, our first man teacher, Mr. Robert Juhl and a new exper- ience, too. We had.the thrill of being upstairs with the high school. School ended and half of our school career was past and our final year in grade school was approaching. On the 28th of August, 1950, we began our last year of grade school with 20 pupils. Our teacher was again Mr. Juhl, but we had a change of rooms, we were moved down- stairs this year. We had two new students, Esther Asche and Gerald Porter, both of whom were here for only a few weeks. We also lost one of last year's students, Neil Mannetter. Later on in the year two new eighth graders moved to the Klemme vicinity. They were Shirley Wilson, and Duane Davis. This was an exciting year in basketball. Both the boys and the girls won trophies in the County Tournaments. The girls played Hayfield and won lst place, and the boys played Garner and won second. Mr. Juhl pre- sented our 8th grade diplomas the same night as the seniors received theirs. Dr. Earl Roadman, President of Morningside College gave the address. We received our report cards on the 23rd of May and were all ready to enter high school. On August 27, 1951, we began school as the freshmen of Klemme High. We were really going up in the world now. We now had thirty studious pupils in our class- -they were: Harold Anderson, Harriett Anderson, Harry Anderson, Gordon Beier, Graydon Barz, Marlene Blumer, Lois Boland, Dick Dulmes, Lee Gruis, Cecil Jacobs, Faye Janssen, Lu Verne Josten, Terry Koerner, Leola Lacey, Gordon Lemke, Joan Lemke, Lorraine Meyer, Doyce Michelson, Carole Montgomery, Alan Neuberger, Merlyn Olson, Lyle Pannhoff, Bueford Polsdofer, Blanche Shoop, Thomas Schoop, John Stevens, Donald Thiemann, Donald Wessels, Shiley Wilson, and Gary Day. Initiation was pretty rugged we thought. For a week we had to bow to the seniors every time we met them. Then came the fatal Friday. We thought we would die of humiliation when we learned what we were to wear. Graydon was especially cute carrying his mop and pail around all day. That fateful Friday night, after we performed several daring deeds, we were accepted as High School students. One of the big events of this year was the Junior- Senior Banquet. Five boys and five girls were chosen to be waitresses and waiters. We were dressed as gypsies. With this the year ended and we were secretly awaiting our second year. After an exciting summer our sophomore year began on September 2, 1952. We lost two students during the summer, Thomas Shoop, and Donald Wessels. This brought our enrollment down to 28. This year we attended the Annual Career Day at Britt. We also went to Woodwardanvisited the Home of the Feeble Minded. This was a very educational tour and enjoyed by all. Towardthe end of the year the Junior-Senior Ban- quet rolled around again and some of us were asked to help. This brought to a close another year. We are now juniors, WOW. August 31, 1953, was the day school sta.rted. This fall we were minus two of our classmates, Faye Janssen and Leola Lacey, but throughthe course of the year we gained four others, Darlene Eichorn, Eugene Wilkinson, Mary Datema, and Marlene Weisbrod. One of the first things we did was to choose our class p1ay Father's Wife. The next most exciting and important to us was ordering our class rings. After quite a few battles we chose for our banquet theme A Hawaiian Cruise. We really worked hard, for a change, so we would have asuccessful banquet and WE thought it WAS success- ful. We girls were pretty busy this yea.r. We ushered for the Senior Class Play and again for Commencement and Baccalaureate. This just about brought to a close our junior year. Just think this fall we actually will be seniors. August 27, 1954, was the first day of our last year of school. We had 27 studious students in our class this year. Duringthe summer months Mary Datema and Bueford Polsdofer moved, but Ina Van Buskirk transferred, here from Kanawha, This was the big year in our career. First on the list was ordering our announcements and thank you cards. Next was having our class pictures taken on October 22. This was really an exciting day. V V ' s' , ' XL' V 4 -- T 'U' 4. ,L Hi W 6- At 6:00 a.m., on March 25, we arose from our slumber and left for Des Moines on our Skip Day. We met at the State Capitol at 9:00 a. m. We toured the Capitol and then went across the street to the Historical Building. We spent the rest of the morning there. We reserved one hour in which we ate lunch and then went to the WHO-TV station to watch several programs as they were being telecast. As soon as we left there we went down the street to the Des Moines Register and Tribune Building to see the paper being printed. After we learned the statistics of the paper and several stu- dents tried to enroll in the Ground Observer Corps Qwithout much successl we journey- ed to the Art Center. Before we began our tour, we heard an interesting lecture about the Center. During the tour we saw the Goya Painting and many other interesting things. After this tour we were on our own until 8:30 at which time we attended the Ice Follies after we finally got in our right seats. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. Luckily, the next day was . Saturday, so we could recuperate from our long trip. Initiation Dance We initiate the teachers. Page Sponsor . . .LARSON MEATS, GROCERIES, LOCKERS -f x 1 1 4 I, ,, w 1- 1 - A . We base the following predictions on observations made through the years, on abilities and disabilities, on behavior and misbehavior. KNOW YE ALL MEN BY WHAT THEY DO! We prophesy ..... . . . , . that Harry Anderson, because of his shrewdness in all matters involving legal tender, will become a car dealer in the Amish colonies, and be no longer shrewd. . . . . . that Donald Thiemann, because of his vim, vigor, and vitality will become the hardest working of workingmen, a blacksmith in a bakery, spending his days shooing flies. . . . . . that Joan Lemke will apply her Home Ec. training to her later life and be a cook in a crematorium. . . . . . that La Vurne Josten, the most shockingly brilliant of our class, will be of the cream of the intellectuals: a professor of journalism at Oxford. . . . . . that Lyle Pannhoff will render his voice unto humanity as a great basso in the Metropolitan Opera. . . . . . that Ina Van Buskirk will put her great physical prowess and flaming temper to the use for which it was originally intended, a coast-to-coast truck driver. . . . . . that Harriett Anderson, because of her great stamina and industry will become what she is most suited for: a baby-stroller test driver. . . . . . that Gordon Lemke, the scholar, will devote his life to Gaelic History. . . . . . that Lee Gruis, the great, the good, will lead all future temperance movements. . . . . . that Cecil Jacobs, the quiet one, will follow his inclinations, become a monk and take the vow of silence. . . . . . that Merlyn Olson, due to his shy, retiring manner will write nursery rhymes. . . . . . that Gary Day, a swim suit designer, will inevitably fall victim to a nervous breakdown trying to tell whether models are in his suits trying to get out, or out trying to get in. . . . . . that Dick Dulmes will follow his talents to music, take up the piano, Polident, and Liberace's fans. . . . . . that Lorraine Meyer will be a prosperous business woman, operating a flea circus, and owning her own dog. . . . . . that Doyce Michelson will be the captain of a garbage scow on the Iowa River. . . . . . that Gene Wilkinson will be head football coach at a prominent girls school. . . . . that someday Gordon Beier will be Mr. America. . . . . . that Carole Montgomery will write mysteries in the style of Mickey Spillane. . . . . . that Alan Neuberger will be a shoe salesman and will spend his days staring at women's feet. . . . . . that Marlene Blumer will be a ballet dancer. . . . that Lois Boland will someday be the world's greatest woman wrestler. . . that Blanche Shoop will be-a deep-sea diver. . . . . . that Harold Anderson will be President. . . . . . that when Abe Saperstein retires as manager of the Harlem Globe Trotters, Marlene Weisbrod will take over. Page Sponsors . . . HANCOCK COUNTY RURAL ELECTRIC CO-OP, Garner, Iowa BUD PRITCHARD INC., Garner, Iowa . . . . . that Darlene Eichorn will be warden of a women's penitentiary. And we further do predict that upon publication of this prophecy, we, Graydon Barz and Terry Koerner, will probably be set upon by numerous outraged classmates.
