136 Sports They Dicln't Thaw Out Until March As the cold, bitter winds svvirled, the lonely track and field athletes stood silently waiting for the grueling competition to begin. Long before the first meet on February 24 and 25, the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity track teams suffered through four practice meets, beginning February 2. Sprinters were lucky, for they had to run only a short time in the cold, cold vveather. On the other hand, distance runners had to trudge steadily around the track braving the cold vvind and rain. However, practice meets vvere essential for getting the track team ready for real competition, according to head Coach Ray Davidson.
