HOWARD HALL CAROL HANSON LYLE MATOUSH 275,41 rfmmfs Deep concentration is shown on the face of Mr. Matoush as he studies an art project on sketch- The Drama and Art Departments are not primarily concerned with preparing students to be actors and artists, but also with bringing out exceptional or hidden talent. Each year students grad- uate from K.U as some of the finest prospective actors and artists in the country. This is credited to the teaching on the part of the faculty of these de- partments. The drama department works com- pletely on a cycle of its own. Producing, arranging, costuming, etc. are all done by the students themselves with the aid of a willing assistant Roberta Blomquist. The art department not only helps the student to better decide on the field of work they will choose for future life, but provides an hour of relaxation for the students taking it, It serves the stu- dent who expects to specialize later in some field of art to follow a definite curriculum. The aim of the teaching Staff of the drama and art department is very simple: to help the student develop feeling for the finer arts courses and become a well-rounded individual in those chosen classes. ing. 37

Pictured here together in one of those rare few seconds are the school cooks: Eva Mills, Florence Robatcek, Alma Nelson, Pearl Ring, Bertha Griggs, Marie Ander- son, Helen Williams lHead Cookl, LaVerne Smith lManagerl, Louise Borton, Merle Brown lSupervisorl. One of the cheery school cooks, Pearl Ring, dutifully performs the ever popular chore, peeling potatoes. Kovks and 611 indian Three lunch hours to prepare for presents quite a problem even for t the capable school cooks, but, as witnessed by the students, they do a wonderful iob. With Helen Wil- liams as head cook, LaVerne Smith as manager, and Merle Brown as supervisor, the cooks issue hot, de- licious meals every day. With more students their iob is much harder. The longer day makes for much more cleaning and much less time to do it in. The school owes much to these men and women who keep our school bright and shiny and in excellent order. The custod- ians wonder if the statement the more the merrier is really true. Al Angel, head janitor at K.U. is talking over one of his many prob- lems with Jim Johnson athletic director. 39
