The teacher is no school master in a sense that would make you slave, but more-or-less a mixture of mother, tather, and policemen. In her incentives to make dependable citizens out ot students she's doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with all the love and under- standing ot a-a-a-a-a-a teacher. And so all our calculations were wrong! Physically she knows he is capable, mentally she won't make an esti- mate, and psychologically she knows he possibly won't graduate. But she's understanding. She talks her pupil into taking a correspondence course to substitute for failing. And with a look of knowledge about him, the young scholar digs into the work before him. Yes, teacher has initiative, and she pushes him further along in his work. She's encouraging and her few compliments seem magnified to him. Back into his shell the bashful client creeps when he fails, and so the teacher begins again the cycle of re-encouragement . . . ARVEL SMITH, B.S., M.S. STEVE STONE, B.S., M.S.
