These forty- four upper class girls clad in their attrac- tive red and white uni- forms. attended all Peli- can football and basket- ball games. The group also had a good repre- sentation at all the out- side games. The girls worked out a marching drill and a card drill which were given between halves at the basketball games. They also spon- sored concessions at the games. Two large social affairs which are given by the Pep Peppers are an annual bridge party and a banquet held at the end of the school year for the parents of the members. liach year the club pre- sents some gift to the school, The gift last year was a large painting, dis- playing a group of white Pelicans floating on the blue waters of the lake. SENIOR CLHSS The students of this year's senior class have been among the most active in school. This group proved, upon entering as freshmen, their athletic supremacy. by winning the interclass basketball championship. Furthermore, many of the most prominent members of the XVildcat football and basketball teams were freshmen. The class of '35 was also well represented in scholastic honors. The class started its sophomore year by being well represented on the Pelican football team and on the VX'ildcat team. Officers were Harold Kleiner, president: Johnny Pas- tega, vice-president: Hob Howard, secretary-treasurer. During the junior year there were six members from the class on the football team, and four of the stars who won the Southern Oregon and district basket- ball championships were juniors. Officers were, Lane XYarren, presi- dent: Bob Leslie. vice-president: and June Johnson, secretary. Finally, as seniors, this class has been exceptionally outstanding in clubs of the school: traffic squad, interscholastic debate, lil Rodeo and lirater staff, as well as in dramatics. Senior officers were: Hob Leslie, president: Carl Dudley, vice-president: Stewart Groesbeck. secretary-treasurer. The senior class motto is: Together we stick-divided we're stuckng colors: Purple and Gold: flower: Yiolet. This prominent class will be missed greatly in the high school. YlXl.TiDlC'I'O R l.-XX Bob Lind, valedictorian for the class of l935. was the hrst boy to attain this honor in the ten years since Klr. Paul T. Jackson began his direction of this institution. Bob also had one of the highest averages made by a valedictorian for several years with 95.89 per cent for his four years' work at Klamath Union High School. SA I .L l'.-X'l'OR IAN Margaret Goldsmith, who ranks second highest in the class scholas- tically. achieved an average only slightly lower-95.70 per cent. The scholastic race be- tween the valedic- torian and salutator- ian has been the closest held for a number of years. Both of the students started school here in 1931 and have been equally promi- nent in various school activities. Page 411 B END G.-XM li For the first time since athletic relations were established between Bend and Klamath Falls, the Pelicans defeated the Lava Bears in the most sensational Finish ever witnessed on Modoc Field. Donald Smith, Pelican back, intercepted a Bend pass and raced 103 yards for the winning touchdown putting the score 13-7 for Klamath, in the last minute of the Armistice Day Game. Racing at the side of Smith on the long journey was Carl Egelhoff. At the opportune moment Carl bowled over three would-be Bend tacklers. leaving the exhausted Smith to cross the goal line unimpeded. Early in the second quarter Johnny Pastega got off a 40-yard punt down to the Bend safety. who fumbled on his 15 yard line. The fast charging Nello Giovanini recovered. Klamath, taking advantage of the break, bucked the ball up to the Bears' two yard stripe, making a first down for Klamath. Hefre the Blue and Gold defense rallied and held the heavier Birds for three downs: the terrific plunging of Johnny Pastega tore the Bend line to pieces. He punched the ball over for score. Kick for conversion was blocked. The northern Bears came back raging in the second half and began to make feathers fiy after Hendeirshot, giant Bend end, blocked and caught Yictor Reginato's punt on the local squad's 12-yard line. After three attempts to puncture the line. Harley Cornett faded back and tossed a pass to George Baker standing in the end zone. Baker also made the last point scored by Bend. YVhen he converted with a line plunge, the scorer remained 7 to 6 up to the last few seconds of the game when Smith made his spectacular run. The passing of Harley Cornett and fioetness of George Baker were the outstanding features of the northern eleven. Gunderson and Blair turned in mighty line per- formances, making gaping holes in the, Pelican forward wall, and doing some sweet tackling. Johnny Pastega's plunging was the outstanding factor in the Red and VVhite offense. His steady and relentless pounding gave the Beyars' line a terrific beating. Nello Giovanini. left tackle and co-captain, played a great defensive game stopping all Bend attempts through his side of the line. and throwing the Blue and Gold backs for repeated losses, Nello also recovered two Bend fumbles. In the third quarter the local griddc-rs attempted to raise the score when Giovanini tried a field goal from the 18-yard line. The. kick was blocked by Hendershot. MEDFORD GAME , Diminuitive Leo Ghelardi proved to be too much for Klamath Falls when he passed and ran for Medford a 20 to 0 victory. October 29. at Medford. At the kick-off in the second half, Ghelardi grabbed the ball on his three yard line. slanted down to the left side of the field drawing the Pelicans with him, and then reversed his field and ran ninety-seven yards for the first touchdown. Bill Bates of Medford was successful in converting, making the score 7-O in three minutes of play in the second half. Their second score came when Stan Kunzman. left end, grabbed a pass heaved by Ghelardi. making the score 13-fl because of failure to convert by a kick. Their third and last touchdown came after jimmy Rogers, Red and VVhite fullback. was removed from the game with a broken arm. The scoring play was a lateral from B. Bates to Bob Smith. who replaced Ghelardi, who traveled twenty vards crossing the goal liner unimpeded. Score, 20-0, after Bill Bates converted through the line. The first half was nip and tuck with neither team threatening although the ball was placed in scoring position by Medford when they fumbled on their fourth down with Klamath recovering the ball to punt out of dan- ger. Although Medford made more fumbles, they played with the advantage of a heavier team. The line play of Giovanini and johnny Pastega made it almost impossible for I.eapin Leo to go through either tackle, while Victor Reginatds timely punts pulled Klamath out of danger many times.
