On April 29, 1961, USS KITTY HAWK was declared ready for service and commission ' 1 9 6 O + + Rm by Naval Naval who USN, mighty ed into the Navy KITTY HAWK sailed our of the Philadelphia Naval shipyard as the first aircraft carrier in the world equipped with 'Terrier guided missiles which replaced the conventional anti-aircraft guns. From the outset, KITTY HAWK established the standard for other carriers to follow. KITTY HAWK steamed from the East Coast in 1961 on her first of many goodwill cruises. This would take HAWK around South America's Cape Hom to her new homeport of San Diego, California. Upon her arrival in San Diego, the ship and her crew began training and in preparation for her Westem Pacific deployment.
