Capt Garry R Mace a native of Marblchead Mass graduated from Bridgewater State College ln Massachusetts ln 1979 with a bachelor of suence degree He recuved his commission as a Naval Officer through the Avlatlon Officer Candidate program ln September 1981 and was designated a Naval Aviator ln November 1983 Hls lnltlal assignment was with VC 5 ln Cubl Point Republic ofthe Phlhppmes where he flew both the A-4 Skyhawk and CH 53E Superstalllon with the Checkertalls untll October 1987 In December 1987 Capt Mace reported to VT 23 in Klngsvllle Texas for duty as an Intermediate JetStr1ke F light Instructor Whlle assigned to the Professionals he served as both Standardization Officer and Trammg Officer In May 1990 Capt Mace joined the Rough Raiders of VFA 125 for 1n1t1al flight tramlng ln the FA 18 Hornet and assignment to VFA 195 ln Atsugl Japan Whlle assigned to the Dambusters f CVW 5 Capt Mace served as Squadron Tralnlng Officer, and Operatlons and Maintenance Department Head During his tour he completed an extended deployment to the Indlan Ocean !Arab1an Gulf onboard USS MIDWAY CCV 413 flying combat sorties during Operation DESERT STORM He also completed two deployments to the Indian Ocean lArab1an Gulf onboard USS INDEPENDENCE CCV 625 flying multiple missions over Iraq in support of Operatlon SOUTHERN WATCH In April 1994 Capt Mace returned to VFA 125 ln Lemoore Calif as the Fleet Replacement Squadron Trammg Officer and F!A 18 Instructor Pilot He reported to VFA 27 m Atsugl Japan as Executive Officer m July 1996 and assumed duties as Commanding Officer of the Royal Maces m October 1997 As VFA 27's skipper Capt Mace led his squadron during a highly successful emergencv deployment to the Arabian Gulf on board USS INDEPENDENCE enforcmg the No Fly Zone over Iraq from January-May 1998 Under his command VFA-27 earned both the prestigious 1998 Battle E Award and the Association of Naval Aviation McCloskey Award for operational and tactical excellence F ollowlng squadron command Capt Mace attended the Naval War College m Newport R I where he earned a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies in March 2000 He then reported to the Navy Warfare Development Command, also ln Newport, as Air Dlvlslon Head QN 513 until hls transfer ln August 2001 In November 2001, Capt Mace assumed command of VFA-125 where he led the West Coast Hornet FRS until February 2002 when he was assigned to the Combined Air Operations Center ln Prince Sultan Alr Base, Saud1Arabla during Operation Enduring Freedom In December 2003, he reported to Carr1erAlr Wlng 5, Atsugl Japan as Deputy Alr Wlng Commander Capt. Mace has accumulated more than 5,000 flight hours including more than 3,000 hours in the F!A-18. His Decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, multiple Meritorious Service Medals, Strike Flight Air Medals, Navy Commendation Medals with Combat Distinguishing Device, Navy Achievement Medals, and various unit and service decorations. . .
