Carrier Air Wing 5 Capt. Joseph P. Aucoin graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and received his commission through the University of North Carolina NROTC program in 1980. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1981 and received orders to VF- 101 for initial training in the F -14 Tomcat. Capt. Aucoin's initial fleet assignment was with the VF -33 Tarsiers', at NAS Oceana, Va. He served as the First Lieutenant, Line Division Officer and Aircraft Division Officer. He completed two deployments to the Indian Ocean and one deployment to the North Atlantic and graduated from the Navy Fighter Weapons School. In 1985 Capt. Aucoin reported to the VF-101 tfGrim Reapers, where he served as a flight instructor, the Tactics Phase leader and the Advanced Fleet Air Superiority Phase leader. In 1987 Capt. Aucoin reported to the VF-84 Jolly Rogers, where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer and the Quality Assurance Officer and completed two deployments to the Mediterranean and one deployment to the North Atlantic. Capt. Aucoin joined the VF-41 Black Aces in 1990, where he served as the Administration Officer, Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer. He completed one deployment to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm and subsequently served as the Carrier Air Wing EIGHT Operations Officer. In 1993, Capt. Aucoin reported to the OPNAV Staff, Programming Division CN80J Bullpen, where he served as the head ofthe Navy Ordnance Programming Section. In 1994, Capt. Aucoin reported to the J-8 Directorate of the Joint Staff, where he served in the Programming and Budget Division and as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Force Structure and Resources. Following refresher training, he returned to VF-41 in 1997 as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer and made two deployments to the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. The squadron participated in Operation Allied Force and twice in Operation Southern Watch. Capt. Aucoin reported to the Strike Warfare Branch, N780C!D, in 1999. He served as the F-14 Requirements Officer and as the Naw3 s principal representative on the Precision Strike Panel and the Fixed-Wing Panel on the 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review Board. Capt. Aucoin has accumulated more than 4,400 fiight hours in the F-14 Tomcat and more than 1,300 carrier arrested landings. His personal awards include the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat V, and the Bronze Star with gold star. Capt. Aucoin is an Arthur S. Moreau scholar and holds master's degrees in Public Administration from Harvard University and in National Security Studies and Strategic Affairs from the Naval War College.
