Lyman, Commandant, 4th Naval District. Admiral Alreigh Burke, Chief of Naval Operations addressed the crowd of 15,000 people who attended the ceremony. Captain William F. Bringle, USN, read his orders and assumed command of the mighty warship. KITTY HAWK sailed out of the Philadelphia Naval shipyard as the first aircraft carrier in the world equipped with Terrier guided missiles which replaced the conventional anti-aircraft guns. From the outset, KITTY HAWK established the stan- dard for other carriers to follow. KITTY HAWK steamed from the East Coast in 1961 on her first of many goodwill cruises. This would take Hawk around South America's Cape Horn to her new homport of San Diego, California. Upon her arrival in San Diego, the ship and her crew began training and testing in preparation fgr her first Western Pacific deployment.
