For her crew, the Kitty Hawk has an 80-bed hospital, an entertainment system that includes color television and three stereo radio stations. soda fountains, library, gymnasium, three barber shops. luxury stores and air conditioning throughout. Since her commissioning, Kitty Hawk has made seven cruises to the Western Pacific. this one being her fifth to the Gulf of Tonkin. For her distinguished performance in combat operations, Kitty Hawk has been awarded two Navy Unit Commendations and is the only carrier to be awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for Vietnam service. This, then, is the Kitty Hawk. On the following pages are the men who manned her and their story.

A Fluatillg City This is the attack aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk lCVA-63l. Constructed by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. she was commissioned on April 29. 1961, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in commemoration of the historic location in North Carolina where the Wright brothers first achieved manned flight. Kitty Hawk is 1,069 feet long and 286 feet wide. Constructed entirely of steel, her bulk, when fully loaded, displaces over 80.000 tons of water. With her 250.000 horsepower. generated by eight boilers and four main engines, the Kitty Hawk can steam in excess of 35 miles per hour. The Hawk's main function is to launch and recover aircraft which she does on a 4.1 acre flight deck The hangar deck provides an additional two acres of open space for parking and repairing aircraft. There are over 1,501 separate compartments in the ship and it took over 300,000 gallons of paint to give her the first coat of Navy grey.
