Constructed by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. she was commissioned on April 29. 1961, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in commemoration of the historic location in North Carolina where the Wright brothers first achieved manned flight. Kitty Hawk is 1,069 feet long and 286 feet wide. Constructed entirely of steel, her bulk, when fully loaded, displaces over 80.000 tons of water. With her 250.000 horsepower. generated by eight boilers and four main engines, the Kitty Hawk can steam in excess of 35 miles per hour. The Hawk's main function is to launch and recover aircraft which she does on a 4.1 acre flight deck The hangar deck provides an additional two acres of open space for parking and repairing aircraft. For her crew, the Kitty Hawk has an 80-bed hospital, an entertainment system that includes color television and three stereo radio stations. soda fountains, library, gymnasium, three barber shops. luxury stores and air conditioning throughout. Since her commissioning, Kitty Hawk has made seven cruises to the Western Pacific. this one being her fifth to the Gulf of Tonkin. For her distinguished performance in combat operations, Kitty Hawk has been awarded two Navy Unit Commendations and is the only carrier to be awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for Vietnam service. The first aircraft to be launched hours ago and now, with air operations completed, the UH-2 was the last aircraft to be recovered This seemed to be a never ending cycle for the men of Helicopter Support Squadron ONE, Detachment Two, lHC-ll who maintained a constant vigil close to the ship during flight operations, ready to pull a downed pilot from the water or pick up a man overboard, Aside from their duties as lifeguard for the Hawk, the versatile. all weather unit was tasked to provide a variety of services to other ships. These duties ranged from holy helo hops for the transport of the Hawk's Chaplains to the transfer of mail and cargo throughout the task force. ln accomplishing all these services, the nine officers and 41 enlisted men of HC-1 Detachment Two maintained a high state of readiness in carrying out their primary responsibility of saving and preserving human life.
