DAVIS COMMANDING OFFICER USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63) Captain Donald C. Davis graduated from the Naval Academy in June, 1943. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Mobile, (CL-63) in the Pacific, which participated in nine major campaigns. Following flight training in May of 1946, he was designated a Naval Aviator. Subsequently, Captain Davis served in several carrier-based fighter squadrons, includ- ing VF-51, the Navy ' s first operational jet squadron. At the start of the Korean War, Captain Davis ' squadron, aboard the USS Leyte, (Ex- CVS-32), was sent from the Mediterranean to Korea. Here he flew 51 combat missions and was awarded two Air Medals. In 1952, Captain Davis was ordered to Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada. Here, while serving as an Exchange Officer, he trained Air Force F-86 pilots for combat missions in Korea. Following his assignment with the Air Force, Captain Davis became Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron Two Hundred Eleven (VF-211) in 1957 and made WESTPAC deployments aboard the USS Midway. (CVA-41) and the USS Bon Homme Richard, (CVA-31). After his Western Pacific tours. Captain Davis reported for duty in Washington, where he served as Aide and Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Navy. In 1960, Captain Davis entered the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. While at Newport, he completed the Senior Course in Naval Warfare. In February of 1962 he became Commander of Carrier Air Group FIVE. While serving as Air Group Commander, he made a South American transit cruise aboard the USS Con- stellation, (CVA-64) and a deployment to the Western Pacific aboard the USS Ticonderoga, (CVA-14). During the years 1964-66 Captain Davis served as the Senior Navy Project Officer for the F-111 (TFX) aircraft in the Air Force Systems Command and was the first Navy pilot to fly the Navy ' s newest fighter. For his part in the F-111 project. Captain Davis was recently awarded the Legion of Merit. On June 3, 1966 Captain Davis assumed command of the USS Montrose. (AP.V212) which recently participated in numerous amphibious operations off the coast of Vietnam. He assumed command of Kitty Hawk on August 28. 1967. Captain Davis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randal N. Davis of Brookfield, Missouri. HUDNER, JR. EXECUTIVE OFFICER USS KITTY HAWK Captain Thomas J. Hudner, Jr. was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on 31 August, 1924 The son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Hudner, he attended schools in Fall River and was grad- uated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts in 1943. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with the class of 1947 he reported to USS Helena (CA-75) on the China station as Signal Officer. Following that tour he went to the staff of CinCPac CinCPacFlt for a year and thence to flight training, upon completion of which he was designated a Naval Aviator in August of 1949. Captain Hudner was in Fighter Squadron 32 flying Corsairs from USS Leyte (CV-32) when that ship deployed from the Atlantic Fleet to Korea in October 1950. From VF-32 in 1952 he went to Corpus Christi, Texas as an instructor in the Naval School of All Weather Flight, then to the staff of Commander, Carrier Division 3 as Flag Lieutenant and Aide. Orders followed to Air Development Squadron 3 in Atlantic City, the 60th Fighter Interceptor Squad- ron with the U.S. Air Force at Otis AFB in Massachusetts, and to Washington, D.C. as aide to the Chief of the Bureau of Naval Weapons. In 1962, Captain Hudner attended the Air College at Maxwell AFB in Alabama where he received his Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from George Washington Univer- sity. Following brief tours with Fighter Squadron 53 and the staff of Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet, he commanded Training Squadron 24 at Beeville, Texas. He reported to USS Kitty Hawk in April of 1966 as Assistant Air Officer and later became Navigator in which capacity he served until his assignment as Executive Officer in September 1967. Among his decorations and awards. Captain Hudner holds the Medal of Honor, the Air Medal, the Vietnamese Navy Distinguished Service Order. 2nd Class, the Navy Unit Com- mendation, the China Service Medal, the Asiatic Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the Vietnamese Service Medal. 205 X s REAR ADMIRAL RALPH W. COUSINS COMMANDER TASK FORCE SEVENTY-SEVEN Rear Admiral Ralph Wynne Cousins assumed command of the Attack Carrier Striking Force SEVENTH Fleet (Task Force 77) and Carrier Division FIVE on October 4, 1967. He brought to the assignment 30 years experience as a naval officer and naval aviator. In previous Vietnam service he commanded Carrier Division NINE in 1965 and received the Distinguished Service Medal for leadership in that command. The citation accompanying the medal read in part: . . . Under his direction, carrier strike groups destroyed over 140 highway and railroad bridges, 300 trucks, 55 watercraft and numerous barracks, supply dumps and logistic installa- tions . . . during the height of the SA-2 missile threat, he developed anti-SAM tactics and directed the first successful strike against an enemy missile installation. After his departure from the Gulf of Tonkin, he remained closely involved in the conduct of the war, serving as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans on the Staff of Admiral U.S.G. Sharp, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific. He was detached from that staff in September 1967 to report to his present duty. Admiral Cousins was born in Oklahoma on July 24, 1915. He was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1937 and his first fleet duty was in the battleship USS Pennsylvania. Designated a Naval Aviator in December 1940, he was assigned to Bombing Squadron Two and was serving with that unit on board the carrier USS Lexington when she was sunk in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1941. He saw further combat duty with Bombing Squadron 11 in the Solomon Islands campaign and at the end of the war was in command of Attack Carrier Air Group 11 in the Pacific. His peacetime duties have included tours in the office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Opera- tions (Air); at the Test Pilot School, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Md.; as Opera- tions and Executive Officer of the carrier USS Saipan; as Operations Officer on the staff of Commander, Carrier Division FOUR; in the Weapons Systems Evaluation Group, Office of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering; as Operations Officer on the staff of the Sixth Fleet, as Commanding officer of the fleet oiler USS Nantahala; as Commanding Officer of the carrier USS Midway; in the Bureau of Naval Personnel; as a student at the National War College in Washington; and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense. In addition to the Distinguished Service Medal, Admiral Cousins ' decorations include the following: Navy Cross (Battle of the Coral Sea); Legion of Merit with star (Office of the Secretary of Defense and staff, Commander-in-Chief Pacific) and two Air Medals (Solomons campaign). He is married to the former Mary McBridge of Los Angeles, Calif. His official residence is Washington, D.C. J 207 CAPTAIN CHARLIE N. CONATSER CHIEF OF STAFF TASK FORCE SEVENTY-SEVEN 208 Captain Charlie N. Conatser, Chief of Staff, Attack Carrier Striking Force, Seventh Fleet, was born December 5, 1916, in Dallas, Tex. He was graduated from the University of Texas in 1938 and entered the Navy in September of that year. He received flight training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. His first flying duty was as a pilot with Bomber Squadron 5 aboard the carrier USS Yorktown. He was serving with that squadron aboard the Yorktown when the ship was sunk during the Battle of Midway in 1942. Transferring to Bomber Squadron 6 aboard the carrier USS Saratoga in June 1942, he participated in the Guadalcanal campaign and was awarded the Air Medal with one star. From June 1943 until December 1944, he served as an instructor at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Cecil Field, Fla., then reported to the carrier USS Cabot as Air Oflicer. While aboard USS Cabot, he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for resisting heavy Kamikaze attacks. In June 1946, he attended damage control and general line schools and reported in July 1946 to the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla., as Assistant Superintendent of Training. In October 1948, the then Lieutenant Commander Conatser assumed his first command: Attack Squadron 154 aboard the carrier USS Boxer. From January to December 1950 he was assigned to the Personnel Policy Board of the Bureau of Personnel. He then was assigned as a Project Officer in the Bureau of Aeronautics from December 1950 to July 1952. Through the remainder of his career. Captain Conatser has held the following posts: Commanding Officer of Composite Squadron 61; Commander, Carrier Air Group 12; Executive Officer, USS Saratoga; Commanding Officer, Air Development Squadron 3; Commanding Officer, USS Cimarron; Commanding Oflicer, USS Valley Forge, and on the Staff of Commander, Naval Air Force, Pacific. In addition to the Air Medal and Presidential Unit Citation, Captain Conatser wears the following campaign and service medals: Asiatic-Pacific with four stars; American Defense; American Theater; China Serivce; World War II Victory; United Nations Service; Korean Service; Lebanon Service; National Defense, and Vietnam Service. y CDR H. DUFF ARNOLD CARRIER AIR WING ELEVEN The team of Carrier Air Wing Eleven and Kitty Hawk has been together since 1961 and the maiden voyage of the two around the continent of South America to San Diego. Beginning their fifth WestPac cruise in November of 1967, CVW-1 1 squadrons were lead by CDR Hank Urban. A veteran of the Viet Nam conflict, CDR Urban was a leader in the first strikes against North Vietnamese Torpedo Boat bases in August of 1964. He joined Air Wing Eleven in December of 1966 and lead them through their second combat cruise to Viet Nam. Less than one month after returning to the air war over North Viet Nam for the third time, the squadrons of CVW-1 1 received a new leader. In brief ceremonies held in Kitty Hawk ' s forecastle, CDR H. Duff Arnold relieved CDR Urban as Air Wing Commander.
