The history of aviation is short but vigorous, even glorious. From humble beginnings in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Wilbur and Orville Wright ' s brainchild has become one of our nation ' s primary tools of defense. The most advanced application of the airplane as an instrument of war is found aboard attack aircraft carriers off the coast of Vietnam today. This is the story of one of these carriers whose name echoes the birthplace of aviation — the USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). More important, it is the story of the 5,000 officers and men who took her (to the Tonkin Gulf) and transformed her latent might into one of the very finest fighting ships in the world. This book is dedicated to the families and loved ones who endured separation for eight long months with scarcely a com- int. They proved beyond question the wisdom of Milton when They also serve who stand and wait. ' Vwc--- ' i r,J . . •• - -■?• ■- USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63) r J 966-67

To tell our story, we ' ve chosen one of aviation ' s finest — the Red Baron ' s fearless protagonist. Snoopy. For eight months Snoopy left the comfortable peak of his doghouse roof, Charlie Brown, Lucy, et al, to come with us to the Tonkin Gulf and see for himself what has happened to aviation sin ce the Red Baron met his just reward. Being unselfish. Snoopy felt he should share his trip with someone. What more grateful recipients of aviation news than his old friends Orville and Wilbur ? And so. as a long cruise began, so did a long cor- respondence between three of aviation ' sgreatest names. The letters are in Kitty Hawk ' s archives now, but they belong to posterity and we are proud to have Snoopy — with just a little help on the picture layouts — tell ou the story of Kitty Hawk ' s 1966-67 WESTPAC cruise.
