Text from Pages 1 - 336 of the 1967 volume:

i!i.t M. i i$mA 044€4k The history of aviation is short but vigorous, even glorious. From humble beginnings in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Wilbur and Orville Wright ' s brainchild has become one of our nation ' s primary tools of defense. The most advanced application of the airplane as an instrument of war is found aboard attack aircraft carriers off the coast of Vietnam today. This is the story of one of these carriers whose name echoes the birthplace of aviation — the USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). More important, it is the story of the 5,000 officers and men who took her (to the Tonkin Gulf) and transformed her latent might into one of the very finest fighting ships in the world. This book is dedicated to the families and loved ones who endured separation for eight long months with scarcely a com- int. They proved beyond question the wisdom of Milton when They also serve who stand and wait. ' Vwc--- ' i r,J . . •• - -■?• ■- USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63) r J 966-67 To tell our story, we ' ve chosen one of aviation ' s finest — the Red Baron ' s fearless protagonist. Snoopy. For eight months Snoopy left the comfortable peak of his doghouse roof, Charlie Brown, Lucy, et al, to come with us to the Tonkin Gulf and see for himself what has happened to aviation sin ce the Red Baron met his just reward. Being unselfish. Snoopy felt he should share his trip with someone. What more grateful recipients of aviation news than his old friends Orville and Wilbur ? And so. as a long cruise began, so did a long cor- respondence between three of aviation ' sgreatest names. The letters are in Kitty Hawk ' s archives now, but they belong to posterity and we are proud to have Snoopy — with just a little help on the picture layouts — tell ou the story of Kitty Hawk ' s 1966-67 WESTPAC cruise. Dear Orville and Wilbur, Sorry to have waited so long to write, but I ' ve been awfully busy. I just wanted to offer belated, but hearty congratulations on your December 17, 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk, Uorth Carolina. Good grief, lots has happened since your flight. You wouldn ' t believe how fast, far and high some of the planes fly now. And Orville, some of them don ' t even have propellers. We call these jets. ' How fellows, this is the real killer -these planes take off from, and land on, ships. These ships are called aircraft carriers. I ' m on one now, and we ' re very busy preparing to leave San Diego in the morning. Write Soon. Your friend, — . IVe wetc afipCCcf iuifizii, eci (a eax tow (fou a tex aCC t ae c ean. There are some things that don ' t change, fellows. People are still dying for freedom. In South Vietnam today there is a fierce battle heing fought against totalitarian communism. You pro baly rememher Vietnam as a part of French Indo - China . The French are gone now, and Vietnam is divided into two countries — Uorth Vietnam and South Vietnam. The Uorth Vietnamese are trying to force the South Vietnamese to su ' bmit to the Communist doctrine and are using every nasty scheme imaginable to succeed. The South Vietnamese are a freedom-loving peo- ple though, and are fighting their hearts out to protect their free way of life. We are traveling to the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam now to help these South Vietnamese defend their homes an? their freedom, just as I ' m sure you av free Americans before you would he. wanted us to. a i Before we got to the Gulf of Tonkin, we made stops in Japan and the Philippine Islands. Japan was a beautiful, wonder- ful country, full of warm, friendly people. The ship was docked in Yoko- suka, which consisted mainly of Thieves ' Alley — the darndest concentration of tars, cabarets, shops and sidewalk vendors you ever saw. A rather unique mode of bathing also attracted a number of Kitty Hawk sailors in Yokosuka. Special Services furnished tours to Kama- kura , Tokyo , and ]Jikko . Kamakura is the home of the Great Buddha, and was a favorite spot for photographers. Tokyo was a little bit of everything — an intense conglomeration of modernity juxta- posed against ancient tradition, an Oriental serenity amidst the hectic hustle of the world ' s largest city. In sharp contrast , Nikko was a small, rural community hidden in a beautiful countryside. Fikko ' s shrines are among the oldest and most beautiful in Japan. SAYONAM (y ' % ' «-: ' %i Our final stop before arriving on station off Vietnam was a busy two-day stay at Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands. The Vietnam conflict has made Subic Bay and its adjoining Cubi Point Uaval Air Station one of the busiest E ' ayal Bases in the world. As the closest base to the combat zone, it serves as the Seventh Fleet ' s most fre- que nt haven for rest, relaxation, replenishment and minor repairs after 30 to 40-day at-sea periods. It is a tribute to the inventive Yankee spirit, which you two so personify, that Subic and Cubi exist at all. After World War II logis- tics problems confirmed Admiral Dewey ' s turn- of- the -century belief in the extreme strategic significance of the Philippines for Western Pacific operations, Favy Construction Batallions faced the (gigantic) task in developing them to their present capacities. Seabees from throughout the Pacific literally moved a mountain at Cubi Point. They dug 19 million yards of earth and 15 million yards of coral fill, and dredged a carrier anchorage and seaplane harbor — the largest earth moving job in history. As a result of their efforts, the 400 million dollar sea-air com- plex there today can house the entire Seventh Fleet and furnish us with everything we need. (And some things we don ' t need, but more about that later.) Our first trip was more replenishment than relaxation. Uow, more alDOut Kitty Hawk. Uo , Orvllle , our pilots aren ' t pigmies and our planes aren ' t tiny. You were right Wilbur, Kitty Hawk is a tig ship. She weighs in at 80,000-tons, and is almost 1,100-feet long. The flight deck where our planes take off and land covers over 4. 5-acres . Our take offs are called launches. Each plane is connected to one of four catapults on the flight deck and catapulted into flight hy a comlDination of its own power and steam pressure. landings are called recoveries. Each plane has a hook hanging from its tail. To land, the pilot engages this hook on one of four cables stretched across the flight deck. The correct amount of steam pres- sure is applied to allow the cahle to unwind slightly, hut ensure an apprupt halt before the plane goes off the end of the flight deck. I ' ve included pictures of some of our planes and one of Kitty Hawk. I hope they will help convince you how far aviation has come. You ' ll hear from me again soon, and I ' ll try to send pictures of launches and recoveries. Your friend , The RA5C Vigilante is a photo- reconnaissance j et. Pleade write doon ' our riendd, Orville 7(JiUur IV Corps SOUTH CHINA SEA Stars and ' Stripes Map — •-  Dear Orville and Wilbur, Yes, we do drop bombs. We drop tliem on military targets in IJortli Vietnam to prevent tlie flow of troops, ammunition, and supplies into South Vietnam. The preparation and planning that goes into each bombing mission is staggering. I ' ll give you a brief run down. Targets are selected in the Integrated Operational Intelligence Center, where computers compile and digest information from photos taken by photo reconnaissance airplanes. In lOIC, pilots are briefed on the targets they are to hit, the resistance they can expect to meet, and other things which seem to be top secret. Later, each squadron holds a brief meeting to discuss details such as points of rendezvous, emergency procedures, etc. Meanwhile, from deep, deep v ithin tlie ship, fuel for the planes starts its trip over Horth Vietnam. Colorful men from V-4 insure that completely pure go- juice is available whenever and wherever needed. Jets don ' t have to use gasoline. They use a more economical jet fuel called JP-5. We have a garage telow the flight deck which we call the hangar bay. Here the crewmemhers keep their airplanes in constant repair and readiness for their TDOmbing missions . WtLile the veliicles of war and. the men who fly them are getting ready, the loomlDS for these missions iDegin their lon| trip to their assigned targets in Vietnam. From magazines and bomb handling areas in the very guts of the ship, the bombs and rockets ride elevators to the hangar bay and flight deck. They arrive literally drenched in the sweat of hard working G-Division ammunition handlers. m P ' Although the hangar is big- 2.5 acreo lit gets mighty crowded and hectic. JLuckily, we have a division of men v ho lare expert at controlling this Jeonfusion- V- 5. They find room where Ithere isn ' t any, to park airplanes, and Imove planes from the hanger bay to the |f light deck in time for their missions. While many still toil helow deck, laction moves upstairs where final Ipreparations are being made on the fligh ! Ideck. From his vantage point in Prifly, the Air Boss guides a kaleidoscopic array of flight deck color. K ' ' SM jBHHj HHH P;- H . glr k i t To the tineducated observer, the silent scene from the sound-insulated Prifly bears all the confusion of a three rins circus. , bb But down in the midst of the roar of the jet engines, it quickly be- comes apparent that the confusion is organized, very organized. Catapu.lts and arresting gear are made ready for the safe launch and recovery of aircraft Every moving part in every plane is cliecked and double checked. 4 f « Si jTxV 1 i 1 SHhS C-- Kr . After It-fey Hawk is a welcome sight after a flight titrou-gli an obstacle course of SAM ' S and flak over North. Vietnam ul M -YIU A - J . J After a rough on the line period we pulled into Subic Bay for our first of many extended stays there. Neither Suhic nor neighboring Olongapo could he called pretty, but after almost 40 days at sea they were at least welcome . For those inclined to athletics and the great outdoors, Subic offered Captain ' s Cup tournaments in most major sports, and steaks, beer, skin-diving, and relaxation on Grande Island. Hardier souls g| invaded Olongapo. fl In the face of nostril- shrinking stench, kamikazi j eepney drivers , and shoe shine boys well trained in guerilla tactics, we crossed a river swarming with juvenile con artists diving for our pen- nies, and established beach- heads throughout the city. Hilda ' s , Swan , Hew Pauline ' s , Copacabana and numerous other night spots played host to some of our more spectacular battles. Some of us took advantage of Special Services tours to Manila, Bagiuo , and Pagsanjan Falls, and found beautiful scenery and smiling people. All in all it was a thorough introduction to the Kitty Hawk sailor ' s home-away-from- home--the Philippines. I ' ve got to run now, fellows. This tropical heat and San Miguel beer have been too much for me. I ' ve got to get some rest before we get back to the Gulf. I ' 11 do my best to answer them. First of all, you ' re right; we don ' t carry enough weapons, fuel, or food to last a line period. We don ' t run out, though. We replenish at sea from ammunition, supply, and fuel ships that come along side almost daily. This underway replenishment requires cool heads and strong backs on both ships. The ships along side send over anything from jet engines to jello, but they don ' t send shells, ' cause we don ' t have any guns. For defense we rely on two terrier missile batteries and always- ready jet fighters loaded with air-to-air missiles. ' ' . . .On the morning of February 24th we anchored in one of the world ' s most heautifu.1 harbors for five days of rest and relaxation. As. the liberty ferry approached the beach, Victoria ' s pearly skyscrapers pierced the morning mist, beckoning us from a sparkling shore. Then as we neared the shore, Victoria ' s face began to show blemishes. Beneath the facade of gleaming modern buildings , we found that Victoria and neighboring Kowloon hid pockets of congested, teeming poverty. This proximity of wealth to poverty would be only the first of many contrasts we were to discover. The stoic British reserve seemed monu- mental amidst the brash Chinese and Indian businessmen intent on selling us everything from suits to postcards. Spending money could even involve a choice between two extremes. Daylight was shopping time. We found tailor-made suits, pearls, jade, and ivory, inexpensive and abundant. As night fell, one of the world ' s most diversified night lifes opened her arms to us. Everything from palacially sedate supper clubs atop luxury hotels to rollicking cabarets crowded the heart of downtown Victoria and Kowloon, vying for IJavy dollars — plenty of ITavy dollars . Special Services furnished tours to the IJew Territories adjacent to Kowloon, where refugees from Red China crowd into shack villages and work for their meals in gigantic modern factories scattered through the territories. Every inch of tillable soil surrounding the factories is worked by Chinese farmers who live much as their ancestors did centuries ago. Hong Kong ' s most startling contrast lies along the perimeter of the JTew Territories — two worlds, communist and free — separated by only a gate. The communist lorth Vietnamese receive much of their support from within a stone ' s throw of one of our favorite liberty ports. TOil ur Oruille ::: M= = Dear Orville and Wil bur, Good grief, your letter reminded me of how many things I take for granted on Kitty Hawk, and sent me looking for some answers. I found the navigation bridge a hubizb of silent efficiency, where the watch officers and the Navigation Department ' s Quartermas- ters keep true plots and courses. With the recent addition of digital computers and a division of men to run them, our Supply Department has become one of the lavy ' s finest. You fellows hit the nail on the head when you said 5,000 men must create a lot of paper work. Most of this paper work is handled by the Executive Dapartment , better known as X Division. Everything from each morning ' s Plan of the Day to a press release passes through the presses and typewriters of X Division. As the ship ' s administrative division, they also handle legal problems, educational benefits, and personnel records. Two branches of X Division, the Post Office and Special Services, furnish us with two of our most valued commodities--mail and KTTY TV. Kitty Hawk also serves as flag ship for Commander Attack Carrier Striking Force , 7th Fleet. From this base, Admiral Richardson and his staff direct all bombing raids over North Vietnam. I hope you fellows haven ' t gotten the impression that this cruise was all work. We were plenty busy and usually bone-tired, but we had some fine entertainment and played host to a number of dignitaries. I got pictures of some of them. Our Air Wing personnel turned out in sparkling whites for a change of command and an awards ceremony. Our sky divers and basketball team made friends wherever they appeared. Fellows, I hope you ' re justly proud of the steps your airplane has taken, and I hope you ' ve learned a little about Kitty Hawk. I ' ve done my best to fill you in, but it was impossible to tell you everything in such a short time. Above all, please remember one thing. Without her crew, a ship is just a hunk of steel. The men of Kitty Hawk come from backgrounds as varied as America, representing everj race, creed, and area. As a composite, they represent a continuation of the courage, strength and intelligence that enabled you to make history at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. These traits keep them away from home for months in defense of something they believe in. These strengths propell them through flak-filled skies over North Vietnam, from which some of the finest never return. So , I would like to take this opportunity to thank those v ho helped me put it together. The book ' s editor, C.K. Eovirland, was alv ays around -laying out pages , editing copy, moaning about deadlines, and generally making a nuisance of himself. Rowland claims to have been inspired to this dedication by the alert suggestions and guidance of the cruisebook chairm-an, LCDR J.E. Horsefield, and his assistant chairman, ENS J.F. moffitt. Able assistance also came from H.H. Davis of VA-112. ms Moffitt, DT3 Mike Close, Rowland, and SGT C.C. Crites, of Stars and Stripes, Tokyo, combined to contribute what are , 1 think, an illus- trious array of pictures of me at work and play on Kitty Hawk. The color paintings introducing various divisions are the work of Kitty Hawk ' s most artistic dispursing clerk. Jim Eyrne may not balance pay records, but 1 think his paintings add up to a ledger full of talent. A large bundle of outstanding color pictures came from the ship ' s photo lab and from a bevy of very proficient amateur photo- graphers on board. All t hose who v orked v ith us at Dai Nippon Printing Company in Tokyo gave us immeasurable help. Mr. Susumu Nakayama and Mr. Ryozo Maetani supervised the printing and Mr. Kiyoshi Ogav a offered technical assist- ance on the layout and design. Meanwhile, in order not to neglect the feminine touch, Mar j on Rowland. English instructor at Dai Nippon, helped out by proofreading and offering layout suggestion in the books early stages. Perhaps most important of all, thanks and apologies to my boss, Charles M. Schulz, for allowing me to take this trip. Me, I was the leg man. i$,u 044€4
