iirr-itMlli if , WHY? VVc arc in Viclnam to fullili one ( f ihc most solemn pledges of the American nalion. Three presidents — President f iscnhower. President Kennedy, and your present president— over I I years, have committed themselves and have promised to help defend this small and valued nation. Strengthened by that promise, the people of South Vietnam have fought for many long years. Thousands of them have died; thousands more have been crippled and scarred by vsar; and we cannot now dishonor our word or abandon our commitments, or leave those who believed in us and trusted us, to the terror and repression and murder that would follow. This, my fellow Americans, is why we are in Vietnam. Lyndon Baines Johnson President of the United States

WHY? The world looks bleak and horrible. The water looks dirt-y and gray. The ship has sailed for one whole year. And every hour seems one whole day. It has gone to practice warfare. And at every port there ' s a demonstration; These men are fighting across the sea, So they won ' t have to fight in this nation. Who is the ship, who are these men. And why is there all this fighting; And whose land are they defending, And whose wrongs are they righting? Freedom is their general, peace their king, (And they want to keep it that way,) But they need men to win the war. And that ' s why the ship sailed away. Chris Demchak, 1 2-year-old daughter of Lt W.A. Demchak
