AN UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENT Since 1899, the transfer at sea of fuel, ammo, supplies or personnel has been an important factor in the mobility of the Navy and its strong position in the defensive posture of the nation. This evolution, called Underway I eplenishment, filled many days and nights at sea during the cruise, delivering everything from NSF () to paper clips. Although KITTY HAWK is capable of staying at sea for long periods, her capability is wholly dependent on the requirements of the least self- sufficient ship in the force, the scre- ening destroyers. Thus, KITTY HAW K topped off her destroyers at frequent intervals, keeping the force at top strength. Underway replenishments gave KITTY HAWK ' S boatswain ' s mates a chance to show their skills, that many times go unnoticed on a car- rier. During unreps, the Deck Di- visions are in their element, display- ing seamanship that has survived several centuries on the high seas.

A TERRIER MISSILE EXERCISE The two Terrier surface-to air missile batteries aft give KITTY HAWK a place in the sun as the world ' s first guided mi- ssile attack aircraft carrier. The two twin launchers are pushbutton loaded, trained and fired. The missiles can be fired singly or in salvoes. Capable of traveling at super- sonic speed, Terrier rides the beam of its radar guidance to ranges far in excess of conventional anti-aircraft shell and inter- cepts its targets with deadly accuracy.
