After hours of drills, after days of drills and more drills, after hours of working and no time for sleep, every man, every inch of the ship was in the shape it must be in if KITTY HAWK is to effectively serve as an integral and important part of her country's first line defense. Starting in the dark hours of early morning, and ending long after the tropical sun went down, our merciless inspectors kept us on the go, and our aircraft flying seemingly around the clock. But when it was over. . .and the ORI a thing of history . . .we knew KITTY HAWK was ready. . .we knew how to work . . .we knew our crew was a top fighting team. With confidence in our ability to represent the United States, we turned south towards Brazil. 38 s w 4. .0- .- v,. nf I? 'I UFF HOURS . . . TU' While the official Navy customs and traditions con- nected with Crossing the Line ceremonies are precise in every detail, the age-old ceremony has only a small Core of ritual which can be expanded in any direction that the Mighty Shellback's imagination may lead. The Equator, though normally thought of as a straight line of no latitude, will long be remembered as a bolt of light- ning by the men of KITTY HAWK who bore the title, pollywogl Members of King Neptune's Court, including the Royal Queen, the Royal Doctor, the Royal Dentist and the Devil, sounded out the crew whether they be shellbacks that follow the sea or slimy pollywogs. After many hours of testing, King Neptune and his court re- ceived satisfaction that this was indeed, an honorable ship and a brawny crew, and permitted passage into the solemn mysteries ofthe ancient order ofthe deep. What transpired as KITTY HAWK crossed the line, cannnot be related in words.. .this surrealistic pageant of sights and sounds, of colors and costumes, was a test of the spirit, the imagination and the anatomy. And in the memories of each lowly Pollywog, transformed into a great Shellback, will be each of the tortures and de- lights of this day of good clean fun. On New Year's Day, 1562, a Portuguese navigator sailed into Guanabara Bay, and named the site, Rio de Janeiro, thinking that the bay was the mouth of a large river. Whatever its original meaning, the name of this lovely city has come to mean justthat . . . a beautiful place of enchant- ment, of the soft and tongue-twisting Portuguese language, a place of warm, dark nights and wild and colorful carnivals. Today, Rio is an exotic combination of South American sights and sounds . . . at once the home of Sugar Loaf and the Samba, each a Brazilian institution, the former affording the tourist a thrilling view of the beautiful city by means of cable car, and the other guaranteed to permanently dislocate the sacroiliac of the uninitiated . . . both unforgettable. Rio is a forest in the middle of a city, a bustling metropolis centered by the marvelous vegetation of Tijuca Forest.. . Rio is famed Copacabana Beach, which features brilliant white sand, intricate mosaic sidewalks and ruffled bikinis . . . Rio is towering Corcovado atop which the great 130 foot statue of Christ the Redeemer whose widespread arms mark the entrance to Guanabara Bay. 83 QC X. 1 IIJ 0-'lane-r-t '3' -ugaqrvu-'iv'.qg,' -Qyg R- 41 1 5339 ' iii-.1 ' Captain Bringle pays homage to BraziI's Admiral Tamandare. Valparaiso CHILE 13-15 October 1961 v Although it was autumn at home, in October it was early spring, in the upside down part of the world below the equator. We visited Chile. . .a long, mountainous ribbon of a country, hugging the south- west coast of the giant continent of South America. We anchored at Valparaiso, principal port of Chile and the most important commer- cial center on the coast, and made a tour to Santiago, as well, located only seventy miles inland from the Pacific. Santiago was a city sur- rounded by mountains . . . to the west the barren coastal range . . . and to the east the snow-covered Andes towered in awesome strength. We'll remember . . . the sharp contrast of colonial archi- tecture and modern construction . . . soft Spanish, graceful and liquid, conducting thriving enterprise . . . the Siesta contrasted with big business... the energy and charm of the Chilean people. Perhaps the most memorable sights were Santa Lucia Hill, laced to its summit with terraces and walks, four hundred feet high, and the nine hun- dred foot San Cristobal Hill, crowned by the local zoo and a statue of the Virgin Mary, reached by sightseers in a picturesque funicular. Here, where you can find the tropi- cal jungles of the Amazon, Andean Indian villages, as well as snow-covered mountains and barren deserts, is the provocative combination of the ancient Inca civilization, with what was once the capital of the Spanish Colonial Empire. Evidences of both these cultures can be found today in every corner of this enchanting country. Few cities in South America have richer stores of archaeological and scenic treasures than Lima, with its old colonial churches and mansions, and the unforgettable beauty of the moun- tainous countryside that surrounds it. Lima, the Royal City of the Kings of Peru, was founded by Pizarro in 1535, and embellished by the skilled architects of Spain with palaces, churches and monasteries. While many of these edifices still remain, most of Lima is mod- ern, and of this century, possessing every facility of a con- temporary and cosmopolitan metropolis. Callao, Peru's main sea port, lies on a quiet bay only eight miles from the bustling capital, Lima, and was our point of departure for our visit to Peru Here the President of Peru was welcomed aboard here we entered the new world of this ancient country which we will remember for the many interesting ruins which today are all that remain of the fabulous Inca Empire for gold and silver articles displaying the native craftsmanship for the llama and Anticucho-for bullflghts and soles for contrast upon contrast time upon time as we saw the centuries in an all too brief visit Q - ' ,,-fW V f4,,,.,f' .,. -. ...,.,.,.-.,- ' .rmqor - --::- -214 ,.,,-A f- ----- A 'A- U' 9 '11-AN . The Air Group was first commissioned at San Diego, California, on Navy Day, October 10, 1942. It was then commanded by CDR Paul N. Ramsey lnow a Rear Admirall. Air Group ELEVEN played an important role in both World War ll and in the Korean Con- flict. On June 5, 1943 the pilots of Air Group ELEVEN conducted the first daylight raids on Bougainville, Solomon Islands. During the war the Air Group made bombing attacks on such well-known places as Munda, Vila, and Rahili during the desperate fighting in the Solomons and New Georgia operations. The Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to the Air Group for its extraordinary achievement against the enemy in World War ll. In October of 1947 the Air Group embarked aboard the VAL- LEY FORGE for the world cruise which ended in June 1948 at San Diego. During the Korean Conflict, Carrier Air Group ELEVEN was the first to tangle with the MIG-15, and was the first Navy group to down one of the Russian jet fighters. Air Group ELEVEN made its most recent cruise to the Far East aboard the attack carrier USS HANCOCK lCVA-191 in July of 1960. During this cruise the Air Group was led by CDR Richard F. Cyr, USN, now with the staff of Commander First Fleet, and was composed of Fighter Squadrons 111 and 114, Light Attack Squadrons 112, 113, and 115, and the C Detachments of VAH-4, VAW-11, and HU-1. A grade of Excellent was assigned by Commander Fleet Air HAWAII during the operational readiness inspection early in the cruise at which time the group demonstrated a high degree of training and readiness. The squadrons and detachments of Air Group ELEVEN flew some 20,000 hours while aboard the HANCOCK, and compiled over 5,700 catapult launches and about 6,900 arrested landings. A highlight of the 1960-61 cruise for Air Group ELEVEN came in November 1960 when it was given the distinction of representing the U. S. Navy in the celebra- tion of the Twelfth Annual Philippine Aviation Week held in Manila. The Air Group flew from the deck of the HANCOCK while it was at anchor in Manila Harbor and took part in a mas- sive air demonstration over Manila International Airport. ln March 1961, Carrier Air Group ELEVEN returned to San Diego and once again began a regrouping and retraining cycle at its homeport NAS Miramar, San Diego. On March 30, 1961 CDR Thad T. Coleman relieved CDR Rich- ard F. Cyr as Commander, Carrier Air Group ELEVEN. At the present time the Air Group is composed of five squadrons. The units of Air Group ELEVEN aboard the USS KITTY HAWK are Fighter Squadron 142 lof Carrier Air Group FOURTEENJ, headed by CDR John B. Stetson, and flying the F8U-1 Crusader, VA-113, commanded by Commander Lewis A. Tomkins, and fly- ing the A4D-2N Skyhawk, Light Attack Squadron 115, commanded by CDR John F. Consisting of eighty two Officers and men, the Detachment operates the A3D-2 Skywarrior, the long range Sunday Punch of Naval aviation. Highlights of Det 'A's cruise included an occasion which few sailors have a chance to encounter, the singular experience of rounding Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. Here, be- tween a little speck of land called Staten Island, and the rocks of the Cape, the crew of Det 'A's A3D-2 Buno. 138907 consisting of LTJG S. P. Balsley, Pilot, LTJG Orcutt, Bombardier,fNavigator and SLEE, AQB3, Gunnerf'Navigator, were the first of the ship's personnel to witness the mingling of the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific. ln this manner, VAH-13 Det 'A' pointed the way west to CVG-11 and USS KITTY HAWK. Other firsts, within the Detachment were the ceremonies and initiation that are part of the rich tradition of crossing the Equator. Thanks to the ef- forts of our three shellbacks, led by LT. Mateer, the ceremony was an unqualified success, as many a sore ex-pollywog will attest. The experience was one which the Officers and men of Det 'A' will remember for a long time to come. Ori the business side, two airshows, one at Rio De Janeiro and the other at Valparaiso, impressively demonstrated the loft bombing and low altitude min- ing capabilities of the Squadron aircraft to various military representatives of South America. Summing up the cruise, the opinion of all hands was that it was unique. VAH-13 Det 'A' has more than lived up to their motto, We can handle it. C I i 11 i l Q 1 i v 3 I 4 1 I P W ig! To mention a few of its past awards, during the Korean Con- flict Attack Squadron 113 received the Presidential Unit Citation for its outstanding combat performance. Following its conversion into a light jet attack squadron in 1956, Attack Squadron 113 re- ceived the Naval Air Battle Efficiency award in 1959. To give you an example of its current professional ability, during the last cruise to the Western Pacific area Uuly 1960- March 19611 VA-113 flew 1,500 sorties which totaled 3,519 flight hours and 1,117 carrier landings. Each pilot averaged 66 day and 13 night carrier landings with eleven of the seventeen pilot making 100 or more carrier landm, s i 156 There are very few aviation squadrons in earistence today that can boast of having received awards and achieved such rec0rdS as a fighter squadron and now as an attack squadron. During its illustrious careeer VA-113 has flown many different types of planes. Its first operational aircraft was the famous F8F Bearcat Since then it has flown the F4P Corsair, the lf9F Panther and Cougar, and after its conversion into a light jet attack squadron the AAD-1 and A4D-2 Skyhawk lt is cur- rently operating with the A4D-2N, a radar version of the A4D-2- This gives the squadron a night and all-weather attack capability- The squadron is now led by CDR TOMKINS, a Commanding Officer who is well acquainted with light attack squadrons. Hue received his indoctrination into this type of warfare during.l1IS participation as a young Ensign in many of the Pacific campalgnS during the second World War. Gee, they were up here last night 73 E1 ark. -...ff-.-5 FIGHTER SQUADRON 142 Tracing the history of Fighter Squadron 142, one realizes the depth of adventure, excitement and color which has molded this group into the Fighting Falcons. Flying the F6F Hellcat, Reserve Squadron 791 was deep in the Weekend Warrior routine when the Korean Conflict ignited. Within a month, it became part of the first all-reserve air group in Naval history to enter combat. The squadron, equipped with F4U Corsairs, deployed 2 March 1951 aboard the USS BOXER. Ensuing months brought intensive action against the enemy, but upon arriving home, six months later, the squadron could boast of not having lost a pilot. The big transition from props to jets began when F9F-5 Pan- thers entered the line, followed by F9F-6 Cugars. The squadron was redesignated to regular status as VF-142. As part of Air Group 14, the squadron deployed 3 February 1954 aboard the USS RANDOLPH from NAS Norfolk. During this unexpected but very enjoyable 6 month Mediterranean cruise, squadron members claimed the title the World Famous Fight- ing Falcons, a claim which they still are quick to defend. The cruise ended 4 August 1954 and CVG 14 returned to NAS Mira- mar, California, its home base, to begin a new training cycle. Pilots participated in evaluation of the steam catapult and in an experimental escape, evasion and survival program. June of 1955 found VF-142 departing from San Diego for a Far East cruise aboard the USS BOXER. This trip called upon the unit to perform extensive flight operations in the evaluation of NAS Cubi Point, Philippine Islands and NAS Agana, Guam. The Fighting Falcons retured to CONUS 3 February 1956 to begin the transition to the FJ-3 Fury. Highlighting the ensuing training cycle was the firing of the new Sidewinder missile. 142 then boarded the HORNET for an- other WESTPAC tour. After 6 months in the Far East, the HORNET returned to CONUS on 25 July 1957 and the squadron disembarked for Miramar, here to await the transition to the F8U-1 Crusader. In October the Crusaders began to arrive in quantity and the training phases were entered in earnest. By 10 March 1958 the squadron was proficient enough in this, the world's fastest car- rier fighter, to carrier qualify aboard the USS MIDWAY. On 3 January 1959 the squadron began its deployment to WESTPAC aboard the super carrier RANGER. A five week train- ing period in Hawaii put both the squadron and ship in a high state of combat readiness and enabled 142 to make the highest grade of the Air Group on the ORI. The RANGER entered San Francisco Bay on 28 July 1959 to bring to conclusion a very suc- cessful cruise which saw the squadron log over 1200 F8U carrier landings. Despite the change to new F8U-2's, the squadron entered quickly into an intensive training program and completed the majority of its competitive exercises in two short months, a tribute to the high level of training our replacement pilots re- ceived from VF-124's Crusader College. As the result of the competitive exercise scores 142 was nominated as the west coast day fighter entrant in the Naval Air Weapons Meet. The WORLD FAMOUS set sail aboard the USS ORISKANY for WESTPAC on 14 May 1960. Upon arrival in Hawaii, THE FALCONS began Carrier Operations in earnest. After completing the ORI, the squadron sailed toward the land of the Geisha Girls. As the sun was passing beyond the horizon on 30 June 1960, LCDR C. H. SCHINDLER, the Squadron Executive Officer, exe- cuted an OK pass aboard the ORISKANY bringing to a close Fiscal 1960, whereby 142 became the First F8U Squadron to successfully complete an Accident Free Year. While deployed on the BIG O the command was awarded the coveted AIRPAC E for Excellence for its operations during Fiscal Year 60. On 13 December 1960 the ORISKANY entered San Diego Bay concluding an outstanding cruise which saw 142 log a record number of flight hours for a deployed CRUSADER Squadron. An Around the Horn cruise in USS KITTY HAWK enabled the squadron to continue training toward its goal of IOOCZ, opera- tional readiness. The training was conducted with the spirit of perfection and professionalism which has become synony- mous with the flying and the pilots of the WORLD FAMOUS FIGHTING FALCONS. - - . ., ..ig,n,,. r ' , ,, - - - ..... .. .... Now after twelve years of commissioned service, HU-1 is the largest and rnost active twelve year old in the Navy. The squad- ron employs groups of men and helicopters to accomplish the task of providing nearly every major ship in the United States Pacific Fleet with helicopter service. This area covers nearly a million square miles from Alaska to the South Pole and San Diego to Japan and the Philippines. The most outstanding work accomplished by the squadron has been the rescue of downed airmen and infantrymen. As of 1 September 1960 a total of 845 men had been rescued via HU-1 helicopters. This figure represents actual rescue, and not the normal evacuation of wounded or people under flood condi- tions. Many of these rescues were made during the Korean War, often under the direct fire of enemy guns. The courage of both pilots and crewmen can best be attested to by the number of decorations granted to the squadron, ranging from one Con- gressional Medal of Honor to one hundred sixty Air Nledals. The Squadron itself was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for Extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from 3 July 1950 to July 1953. Besides making rescues, HU-1 does an invaluable service to the fleet by transferring mail, vital tools and parts, as well as personnel between ships underway at sea. The versatility of the helicopter makes it ideal for transportation of VlP's over short distances. Among the many famous people transported by HU-1 helicopters areq Carlos P. Garcia, President of the Philippines, Chiang Kai Shek, President of Chinag Cardinal Spellman, the Secretaries of Defense and Navy and many others. Wherever you find a United States Navy Aircraft Carrier or another major ship in the Pacific Fleet, there you will find the ever present HU-1 helicopter, ready to do its part in keeping the world free. 2 v-as Y-film-.4 il' Agfa..
