We will carry with us all the knowledge and learning that we have acquired at Kittrell College. As we recall the many wonderful events we shared during our two years here, we shall remember, especially, the places where we gathered to study, to play, or just to be together. Our Yearbook, the BULLDOG, will help us to remember the important events which contributed to our happiness, pleasures, and even our disappointments. We shall remem- ber the long lines, grade points, dances, ball games, a nd particularly the construction of our new classroom facility. We shall remember 1969 for IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR. Dedication Mrs. L. E. Cabiness With contriteness of spirit, devotedness of heart, and respect for humility, the Class of 1969 dedicates this edition of the BULLDOG to Mrs. L. E. Cabiness, our versatile music teacher who has vastly enriched our intellectual understandings. The same warmth, friendliness, and sincerity that is exemplified in her classroom is al- so felt by those who have come to know her as a teacher and friend. Her devotion, pa- tience, and understanding have made a very real contribution to our development. Among the extracurricular activities at Kittrell, one can find Mrs. Cabiness at work as Director of the Choir—an organization in which the entire school population takes pride. Mrs. Cabiness—a teacher dedicated to the youth of Kittrell College to whom she has been an unfailing in- spiration. Len Although her tasks be many, Mrs. Cabiness finds time to be an attentive mother to her daughter Doris, a Soph- omore at Kittrell. Not shown is her son, Jock, who is in elementary school. Re-dedication and Mrs. James H. Semans Dr. Donald Agnew A wave of nostalga overcomes us as the memories of the Re-Dedication and Fall Convocation Services re- turn to us. The memories which embodied a past built on hopes and dreams had become a reality to those who worked diligently and sacrificially toward establishing a more progressive Kittrell College. This day marked the opening of our newly renovated library and of our totally new annex which houses six classrooms. The guest speaker for the Re-Dedication Service was Mrs. James H. Semans, granddaughter of the late Dur- ham philanthropist, B. N. Duke, who originally donated the library to Kittrell in the early twenties. The speak- er for the Convocation Service was Dr. Donald Agnew, Associate Director of the Southern Association of Col- leges and Schools. Convocation Services Mrs. Jamison presents an honorary plaque to Mrs. Semans. Mrs. Vorhees Jamison, Na- tional Alumni Association Pres- ident, presents a plaque to Mrs. Elvira Baber for whom the an- nex was named. The crowd gathered in masses to witness the Dedi- cation Services and to tour the historic library and new facilities. ADMINISTRATION 10 Bishop George W. Baber® Honor was never bestowed upon any man for receiving, but it is awarded to him for giving unselfishly of himself in service to others. In recognition of his deep and sincere interest and continuous efforts in behalf of the Kittrell College family, we pay tribute to our Bishop and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, George W. Baber. Each of us has felt the sincerity and interest exhibited by our Bishop. Through his effective and dynamic efforts, our College’s progress has accelerated tremendously. We feel fortunate, in- deed, to have this man of humility, vision, and fortitude as our leader. Members of The Board of Trustees of Kittrell College i ee Mpimina@e Cue Ce ee 11 12 Members of The Missionary Society of Kittrell College The members of the Missionary Society, with Mrs. G. W. Baber as Director, continual- ly strive to upgrade and make more comfortable and beautiful the surroundings at Kit- trell College. Their latest contribution was a set of draperies for the student lounge of the newly renovated B. N. Duke Library. Members of the Board of Consultants for Kittrell College In its quest for the attainment of its new objective—that of providing compensatory education for disadvantaged youth—Kittrell College is fortunate to have a distinguished Board of Consultants to help chart its course. This seven-man Board consists of: Mr. Silas M. Vaughn, Business Manager of St. Andrews Presbyte- rian College; Dr. Elmer Schertman, Instructor in Political Science at St. Augustine’s College; President Horton; Dr. Bruce Whitaker, President of Chowan College; Mr. Charles L. Wheeler, Director of North Carolina State Commission on Higher Education; Dr. John B. York, Dean of Louisburg College; and Dr. Isacc Miller, President of Bennett College. Not pictured is Dr. King Cheek, Academic Dean of Shaw University. 13 14 Presiden There have been in all ages and cultures men who walk taller than those who walk beside them. In the unique surroundings at Kittrell College, there is such a man. A man who continues to grow in wisdom and meaning to us, who has carried our problems on his shoulders, and who has given us the unequaled gift of faith in ourselves. He has been patient and understanding when we cry with dissatisfaction; he knows how to talk with us, because he knows us. We are fortunate and proud to have this man for our leader, for the President of our institu- tion—President Larnie G. Horton. LS : Beside every successful man there is a dynamic woman—and a son to follow in his footsteps. Kittrell College is fond of its First Family: President and Mrs. Horton and their son, Larnie, Jr. The role of the President calls for a person with a versatile personality. This role is ade- quately filled by our President as he is seen above greeting visitors to the campus and ad- dressing a group of dignitaries. 15 16 BENNIE L. REEVES, ACADEMIC DEAN A dynamic and forceful person in Kittrell’s quest for excellence is our Dean of Academic Affairs. Through his leadership, the faculty is united in their efforts to provide relevant, meaningful experiences for the students at Kittrell. Dean Reeves earned the B.S. Degree from Bishop College, the M.A. Degree from Texas Southern University, and has completed the course requirements for the Ph. D. Degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dean Reeves gives mail to his student secretary, Verna Alston. DEAN L. A. WOODWARD In a new and purposeful period of intellec- tual growth, students have been aided in making many adjustments to life at Kittrell by our Dean of Students, L. A. Woodward. Dean received his B.S. Degree from the Dis- trict of Columbia Teachers College; his M.A. Degree from New York University; and has studies further at Howard University. Dean Woodward plans stu- dent activities with Student Government Officers, Nannye Fisher, Secretary and Glenn Johnson, President. Sno somempnnonnanrtiignenmtn nas Dean dictates a memo to his student secretary, Gloria Wells. 17 18 MRS. K. B. HORTON, REGISTRAR Versatile, creative, and indefatigable—these terms describe in large measure our Registrar, Mrs. K. B. Horton, whose dynamic personality inspires all of those around her. Mrs. Horton earned her B. S. Degree from Winston-Salem State College and completed her graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mrs. Horton and her secretary, Cheryl Thomas assist students in registration and in countless other ways. Business Managers Mrs. Verna S. Bullock, Assistant Business Manager, is primarily con- cerned with student accounts. A na- tive, of the Bermuda Islands, she earned the A. S. Degree from Kittrell College, the B. S. Degree from Allen University, and has studied further at North Carolina College. 3 Mr. Rajinder Parshad, Bus- iness Manager, is responsible for a complete record of all financial transactions at Kit- trell. Although for us life at Kittrell is ending, many new horizons lie unexplored before us. Our days at Kittrell marked the beginning of our growth in many ways; they marked a time for us to begin rea- lizing the value of competition; a time for us to make preparations for tomorrow. Sometimes we failed, but in failing we found strength to begin anew. We sincerely hope that as you turn the pages of this annual you will be reminded of the bridge that we have halfway crossed. Our glorious days here are swiftly ebbing, but in our hearts we know we will always cherish the memories that we found here. Truly, 1969 was A VERY GOOD YEAR. Henry McDonald, Editor Smiles of success beam on the faces of the hard working Yearbook Staff which includes: Ida Lett and Cheryl Thomas, typists; Mary Walker, Trea- surer; Verna Alston (seated), Secre- tary; Arnold Herring, Copy Editor: Gloria Wells, Assistant Secretary; and Sonny Alston, Associate Editor. Rall 8 n QAO KANON Aes Many hours of hard work and concentration are essential for a good yearbook. The web of deadlines entangles many of the students into spending long hours completing unfinished business: writing and typing, identifying countless faces, drawing layouts, and other tasks. Through the efforts of the students, faculty, and our Advisor, Mrs. E. T. Vaughan, the Bulldog Staff is able to present to you a panoramic view of the 1968-69 school year. 79 Campus Queens 80 QUEENS ASANTE ce SESE OR ghee RRS SE oe ”° ight . “She walks in beauty like the n 81 ttrell Miss Ki LIS, ee ee LE ise PEL OMS pip Tio Malou Lisiiiay i hapsay, Ops is sii i en i —— | Attendants to Miss Kittrell Cheryl Thomas ‘Creedmoor, North Carolina in . a Grace Drummond Accomac, Virginia 83 scope Attendants to Miss Homecoming Gloria Wells Martinsville, Virginia Ida Lett Apex, North Carolina 85 iss Sophomore M SEEN BEEN SS RAIN on rte ieeeemeengeaeegns reser neRNA RraNRRRRRRHANNS ASS Lee Yes Susette Swindell Savannah, Georgia Aitendant to Miss Sophomore Freshman ISS M 88 Freshman ISS Attendants to M oO = TS oO Z a) a=) eal Carrboro, North Carolina pari ey Diane Daniels Aberdeen, North Carolina coimaicniee eT 89 90 Cross-Country: A Thriving Sport Few people realize the endurance and will power that is necessary for cross-country running. This year’s runners coached by Mr. Moses Golatt, represented one of the finest teams that Kittrell College has had. The team attended the regional ten N.J.C.A.A. Cross-Country Meet held in High Point, North Carolina on November 9, 1968; the team, in a display of skill and running ability, placed third in the Meet. James Flanagan and Josephus West were the top runners. The team consists of: Ronald Spencer, Josephus West, Harry Clark, Redden Leggett, James Flanagan, Bobby Bland, and Larry Love. Stamina: Key to a Good Soccer Team Kittrell College’s Athletic Department has added a new sport to its Intercollegiate Athletic Pro- gram; the sport—soccer. Although the team failed to register a win for the three game season, they showed great potentials for a more competitive season next year. Coach Golatt stated that: ‘“‘Many of the players had never had formal training in the sport but showed an innate desire to learn.”’ Outstanding performances were displayed by Paul Graham, Artis “Otto” Rawlins, Redden Leggett, and William Taylor. Graham, a slender 5’7”, 130 pound Sopho- more, performed as a 6’5” 230 pounder on the field. He has proven to have great skills in the game. Rawlins, Leggett, and Taylor are credited as being most valuable team players. —Bobby Rorie, Sports Editor Track ' Ny ! Because of its dedication, desire to win, and stamina, the Kittrell College track team is among the best. The team, Coached by Mr. Moses Golatt, is one in which the College takes pride. The team begins its ’68-’69 season in the spring and is confident that this season will be a successful one. 94 Basketbal Rad A good team is not only one that can score and win; it is a team that can work well together. De- signed to teach good sportsmanship, to build sound bodies, and to afford capable students an oppor- tunity to perform, basketball has become a major sport at Kittrell College. Coached by Mr. M. McKinnon and Mr. Moses Golatt, the team has had a successful season winning 14 and losing 6 games in conference play. The Bulldogs displayed great teamwork headed by the consistently outstanding playing, offensive and defensive, of the Captain, Redden Leggett. 95 96 Curtis Norman Redden Leggett, Captain The Most Bull Henry Douglas Outstanding Dogs Wendell Sport Wiens Jimmie Smith Morris Moreland 97 98 € : : oe Light-hearted and spirited, the girls on our cheering squad supported our teams with vigor.
