Duke Library to be completed by the spring of 1968. Kittrell, North Carolina 27544 DEDICATION The Sophomore Class proudly dedicates the 1968 Bulldog to Mrs. Marie Allen with thankfulness for her untiring services and helpful guidance. Mrs. Allen worked as maid for the former President, Mr. Phillip R. Cousin, from 1960 to 1965. In 1965 she became a member of the college dietary staff. She possesses many fine qualities for which she has gained much respect from those around her. Mrs. Allen is well liked by the student body and is always ready to give of her time, her devotion, and her assistance to anyone who seeks it. With pride and gratitude we, the Sophomore Class of 1967-68, again acknow- ledge you, Mrs. Marie Allen, one who has made us realize that we should “‘stand tall” and be proud for what we are, who we are, and where we are. You have cer- tainly been a great asset to the Kittrell College Family. M FOREWORD Swiftly, inevitably college days pass into semesters, into years, and finally into the bitter-sweet moments of commencement. The memories of these two eventful years are stirred now and again when we recall early ambitions, successes and failures, friendships, fresh- man beanies, instructors, basketball games, meetings, dances, grade- points, cafeteria lines, and countless other events. The Yearbook Staff and the Sophomore class take pride in pre- senting the 1968 Bulldog, an abstract collection of the people and events that filled our final year as members of the unique Kittrell College Family. We invite you to frequently turn these pages and re-live with fond- ness your days at K.J.C. MISS MARY SUE MC CLAIN IN MEMORIAM The memory of Miss Mary Sue McClain is dear to many; the members of the Bulldog Staff wish to pay tribute to this kind and generous woman who very tragically departed this life. Miss McClain received her B.A. degree in Health and Physical Education from Saint Augustine’s College in January 1966 and joined the Kittrell College family the following February. i During her stay at Kittrell, she was loved deeply by everyone who knew her. The welfare of her students was her sole interest. She would willingly lend an understanding and sympathetic ear to any student who had a problem, and she invariably had a smile for everyone. We all dearly miss her sincere kindness and cheerfulness. The memory of Miss McClain will long linger in the minds and hearts of those who knew her; each of us is better for having known her as a teacher and friend, FRESHMAN Freshmen excitedly arrive at K.J.C. and are soon caught up in a maze of events that resembles mass con- fusion. There are placement exams, long registration lines, initiation activities, receptions, and many other name- less occurrences. Life seems to be an intricate labyrinth, but from this state we settle down to reach our goal—learning, for we realize that persistent people begin their success where others end in failure. ACTIVITIES BEGIN OUR 82nd YEAR CONV OCATION EXERCISES Fall Convocation—the official opening of the school year, when the graduates and friends return to admire Kittrell College and to re-dedicate themselves to her support and continued growth. The key to a successful future lies within the leaders of our institution and is often manifested in speakers on campus who have significant advice to offer. Such a speaker is Mr. Charles L. Wheeler, Director of the State Commission on Higher Education Facilities, who dynamically delivered the Convocation Address. Mr. Charles L. Wheeler, Principal Speaker. Dean Woodward, Bishop Baber, and President Horton converse with Mr. Wheeler. The audience listens at- tentively to the National Alumni President, Mrs. V. B. Jamison. THE WOMEN’S MISSIONARY SOCIETY AIDS KITTRELL COLLEGE The Women’s Missionary Society of the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church culminates its year’s work at the Retreat held on Kittrell College’s Campus in late summer. The highlights of the conference are the Night in White and the Queen Contest which involves the entire Sec- ond Episcopal District in a fund raising project for the benefit of the college. It is obvious by your generous support that you share our vision of a Class A accredited institution of higher education. This Kittrell has made substantial progress as evidenced by ex- tensive renovations, the securement of funds for our new library and classroom facilities, and a large student enrollment. However, this is just the beginning and we need your continuous sup- port in order to attain our goal. We are also grateful to the President, faculty, and staff for their dedication and professional services during the year. To a large measure, the success accomplished at Kittrell comes from their leadership. To the class of 1968, we express sincere congratulations for having reached a significant step in your quest for a liberal education. We are happy to share in your joy. May God bless each of you as you move out into the larger dimensions of life. Bishop G. W. HORTON PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The school year 1967-68 marks another milestone in Kittrell’s “Great Leap Forward” to- ward excellence in education. Tangible progress has been realized: construction of new library and classroom facilities will begin soon; our self-evaluation and a master plan for renovation and expansion of our campus are on the way. Sincere thanks go out to our many friends whose real sacrifices make our dream an imminent reality. Especially, we thank our Board of Trustees, parents, Presiding Elders, pastors, missiona- ries, Conference Workers, alumni, and laymen who have labored so diligently on our behalf. To the graduating class, I extend personal commendations, The completion of the first two years of college education is a wonderful beginning. I sincerely hope that you will continue your education at a senior college. Best wishes to each of you in your various endeavors. For- ever keep Kittrell dear to your hearts. L. G. Horton 15 DEAN L. A. WOODWARD “He who would kindle others must first glow himself.” This statement describes in a large measure our Dean, Lo- renzo A. Woodward. He has glowed and is continually radi- ating light and giving of his time and services to Kittrell Col- lege as Dean of Students, Dean of the College and Financial Aid Officer. Dean received his B.S. Degree from the District of Co- lumbia Teachers College; his M.A. Degree from New York University; and has studied further at Howard University. Mrs. Horton discusses registration procedures with student, Howard Johnson. MRS. K. B. HORTON, REGISTRAR Mrs. Katrena B. Horton, our Registrar, is a constant reminder to us that character is a corner- stone to success. Though her tasks be many, she is always gracious in her role as Registrar and wife of the President. Mrs. Horton received her B.S. Degree from Winston-Salem State College and completed her graduate work at the University of North Caro- lina at Chapel Hill. 17 REV. J.O. KELLY, CHAPLAIN AND COUNSELOR “Ye shall know the truth...” From the pulpit of the Kittrell College Chapel, Rev. J. O. Kelly weekly delivers dy- namic messages which cause students to delve within them- selves in search of self-truths which, when coupled with the academic training that they receive at Kittrell, would truly liberate and inspire them to seek higher goals. Rev. Kelly received his A.B. Degree from Arkansas A. M. College and his M.D. Degree from Southeastern Seminar where he is continuing his studies. Students are always anxious to chat with Rev. Kelly after the morning services. Rev. Kelly in an informal counseling session | with freshman students. 18 BUSINESS MANAGER Miss Verna P. Saunders, Business Man- ager, received her A.S. Pre- ceding achievement is the challenge which is encountered everyday through educational expe- riences and dedication to the attainment of personal goals. With a hard working staff, we have endeavored to mark our achievements by capturing in photographs and words the memories of personal observations, and the projections of the thoughts and experiences we have witnessed throughout this year. On behalf of the Bulldog Staff, I wish to express deep appreciation to our parents and spon- sors who have sacrificed so much that we may be here; and to our instructors who have taught us to reason and to be firm in all matters. I wish to leave with you a thought which has been widely proclaimed; ‘Individuals are characterized by originality, variety, and independence.” The Bulldog Staff has attempted to be original in its presentation, to have variety in capturing events, and to be independent in itself. We do hope you will enjoy our presentation. i Howard Johnson YEARBOOK STAFF Cleveland Bassfield, Photographer; Nathan Brown; Henry McDonald, Copy Editor; and Annie Watkins, Asso- ciate Editor converse with Miss E.
