Mia Mm -pq 1 K Foreword To commemorate our dgolden anniversary, the staff of the Kit-han-ne here includes the intro uction to the original yearbook as a frozen mo- ment in time. Nestling cosily in the lap of the verdant foothills of the Alleghenies, on the banks of the placid river, is the beautiful, little city which holds so many dear associations for us all. However mediocre and unprepossessing it may appear in the eyes of the stranger, we, who call it home, can preceive the mellow beauty and distinctive personality of the charming old town-Kittanning. Like many towns in this vicinity, Kittanning is of Indian origin. The name, contrary to a prevalent idea that it is de- rived from an Indian word meaning cornfield, is a preversion of Kit ban-ne, meaning at or on the main stream, hence the town on the main stream. A few arrow heads and tomahawks are unearthed now and then in the town and its precincts, significant reminders of the days when three Indian tribes lived where our bustling little city stands and of the turbulent days that followed the white manis appearance in the fertile valley of the Allegheny. We name this book Kit-han-ne in the hope that it may recall to your minds the wild romantic tales of Indian horrors, and pioneer courage and fortitude, and that it may inspire you with an ever greater love for old Kittanning and for our Alma Mater-K. However, we, the Class of 1972, find that we must break with tradition because we can- not bring ourselves to single out one particular individual for this honor. Instead we feel that the 1972 Kit-Han-Ne dedication must be shared by the three people who have contri- buted the most to our class in addition to their contribution to Kittanning High School. Therefore, we dedicate Volume Fifty of the Kit-Han-Ne to our class advisors: Virginia Easley, Iohn McConnell, and john McMahon. flemmrs Xyxgk W YDWZ XX X, XXX F fi jf , f ! The Seniors even manage to sneak into the underclassmen's pic- tures. They hold priviledges that we, the underclass- A men, have yet to attain. When the frozen moments of time have thawed-we will be the mighty, mighty se- 3 niors. However, between the covers of this yearbook we are forever frozen as the Underclassmen of1972. 95 I ,frm 96 97 3,1- .-M M 'Nw Qha 98 QPR., AJ: ,M vvkg W MQW. Stottlemyer In a recent address delivered to a group of parents, the United States Commis- sioner of Education made the statement that the nationis schools are better than they have ever been and are getting better every year. I am sure there are those who will challenge this statement, among them members of this yearls graduating class who probably have a diflerent evaluation in light of circumstances that have devel- oped in most of the nationis educational institutions. At a time when the great issues of education center around finances, integration, bussing, and collective bargaining it is sometimes very difficult to view education in its proper perspective. However, as unpleasant and disruptive to the school pro- gram these issues may be, they are part of our changing world. No generation has ever been free of pressing problems, and it is a measure of maturity how we adjust and react to new and different ways of doing things. As superintendent of schools, it is my sincere wish that the education you have received in the public schools ofthe Armstrong School District has prepared you to accept responsibility and leadership. Your school will have served its purpose if it has prepared you to intelligently cope with the many issues that will confront you as a young adult. Richard Stottlemyer, Ed. D. Superintendent Armstrong School District 2 PrincipaI's essage Greetings to you, the class of 1972. Although we have not known each other for long, your future is of primary concern. To mention the future is to speak of the unknown. The unknown provides a mystery of intrigues. What shall we encounter? Are you prepared to cope with the situations that will become part of your life? For the past twelve years, your schools have attempted to prepare you for this arduous journey through this toilsome path. NVe have tried to train you with skills that will help you endure and succeed with the problems you will face. Skills are tools and as such they must con- stantly be sharpened. How well you use them becomes your respon- sibility. Skills are not enough on their own-companions to them are attitudes and faith. These must be developed by you. The way you blend these three ingredients will shape your life. Can you do the job? Are you equal to the task? Ernest O.
