ELLEN T. LIAS Now as our school days are ended, And we leave for a future you've helped us to pave, To you our thanks are extended, A small retum for the gifts that you gave . You've helped us every day in many, many ways, You've taught us and shown us the right things to do, You've successfully directed our plays, Mrs . Lias, we dedicate this book to you. The 1954 Kit-han-ne Staff 6 MISS JOSEPHINE WILSON C E would be entirely remiss were we to fail to recognize the passing, late yesterday aftemoon, of a member of the faculty of Kittanning High School. The death of Miss Josephine Wilson has come as a distinct shock to all of us . Miss Wilson was a teacher in the greatest meaning of the word, a teach- er whose primary interests lay with the girls and boys with whom she came in contact and with the upbuilding of the profession of which she was more than just a member. Miss Wi1son's passing will mean even more than a professional loss: I feel a deep personal loss. In saying this I know that I express the feelings also of every boy and girl in our school, of each member of the faculty, of the administration, and of the Board of Education. Let us dedicate the program this moming to the memory of Miss Josephine Wilson to whom we can pay a very deep tribute by saying simply that she was a good teacher. May we briefly bow our heads in memory. fTribute to Miss Josephine Wilson by the Superintendent of Schools at assem- bly September 18, 1953.1 Burt Dunmire 7 :TW OPERATING CO ITTEE LEFT TO RIGHT, FRONT ROW: Mr. Harry Fink, Mr. John B. McIlwain, Mr. Harold Jack, Chairman: Miss Hazel Gibson, Secretary. BACK ROW: Mr. Paul Moore, Mr. W. M. McCune, Mr. A. W. Witzeman, Mr. Burt Dimmire. Miss Hazel Gibson and Mr. W. M. McCune, President of Kittanning Area Secondary School System. EI!-IE affairs of the Kittanning Area Secondary School System are administered by an operating committee. It is composed of one member from each district, and two mem- bers elected at large by the Kittanning Area Secondary School System Board. The board, composed of thirty-five members, meets in December for reorganization, and again in the spring to adopt the budget. Special meetings may be called when neces- sary. Participating in the Kittanning Area Secondary School System are five school districts-Kittanning Union School District, East Franklin Township, Rayburn Township, Val- ley Township and North Buffalo Township. 8 Foryears to come, schools will face numerous problems --financial and physical along with a critical teacher short- age. Consequently, schools need the active support of every citizen. You, as future citi- zens, have a.n obligation to maintain an interest in the schools in order to help pro- vide adequate educational fac- ilities for your community. We look to you for help . Burt Dunmire PRINCIPAL Forrest R. Schaeffer, B. S., M. A, To the Senior Class: Education is more than just the things we learn in classrooms and from books of knowledge. It covers learn- ing acquired in everyday life . Facts never originate in a textbook: somebody has to discover them before they can be written. Experience itself is an education and a great teacher. It presents itself dailyg do not overlook it. W. Hall 9 SUPERINTENDENT Burr Dunmire, A. B.. M. Ed. Members of the Class of 1954: A11 of you are looking to- ward the future- -a future which holds the promise of opportun- ity to those who are willing to be enterprising in their thoughts and actions . The greatest gains in hu- man freedom, in scientific discovery and industrial de- velopment are yet to be made . You are the individuals who can make those gains. Forrest R . Kittanning-32 Ford cny-13 Amidst the fog, the annual tilt between K.H.S. and their down river rivals was played on the opponent's field. The Glassers made a vallant at- tempt, but they were over- come in the second half by the mighty Cats. Due to the outstanding performance of the Wildcat team, the game ended with a 32-13 victory for the Rearlc men. Kittanning- 13 Apollo - 12 The Wildcats posed their sixth victory of the season with a 13 -12 close shave over Apollo . Pushing their way down to the one yard line, the Cats plunged over to score the wirming touch- down in the third quarter. The greek Gods had a last minute drive started, but an intercep- tion in the end zone saved the day for Kittanning. Kittanning-33 Tarentum- 7 After being held to a 7-7 tie during the first three quarters, the Wildcats showed their true spirit in the fourth quarter as they scored 26 points to swamp the Tarentum Redcats. 'I'hat entire squad made a fine showing in the last perform- ance on the home field. Kittannlng-39 Indiana-20 Piling up a 20-O halftime score, the Wildcats ran wild over the Indians of Indiana to win by a 39- 20 margin. Improved running, on the part of the Kittannlng hacks, accounted much for the victory. The Indians were finally able to score against the Wildcat reserves in the second half. Mr. Rearic COACHES Mr. Get-dy Bob Shilling can Haye Jim Vanderlin Kittanning-7 Freeport-27 The slippery fingers of the Kittanning backs proved to be the downfall of the Wildcat team. Furnbling flve times, the Wildcats gave the Yellowjackets a victory. The Wildcats scored their lone touchdown on a 37 yd. aerial into the end zone in the second quarter. 87 Kittanning- 12 Pimxsutawney-21 Despite the fact that the Wild- cats held the lead in the first half, the powerful Punxy eleven came hackin the second half to defeat the Cats by a score of 21-12, A massive forward wall, coupled with a fine backfleld, proved disastrous for the Kittanning squad. Kittannlng-46 Red Bank Valley-7 The Wildcats completely outclassed the smaller, less experienced Red Bank Valley team as they scored at every opportunity. The entire bench played a superb game as they left the Red Bank Valley eleven in the dust. 'I'he Red Bank squad was able to score but once late in the third period. Kittanning-7 North Huntington- 0 Climaxlng a 92 yard drive witha ten yard pass into the end zone, the Wildcats tallied the garne's only touchdown as they defeated North Hunting- ton. 'I'he fans were tense at several instances by the bad bnealcs that hit the Wildcats. The fine play of the defensive team saved the day in the sec- ond half as they stopped sever- al Bulldog drives. Kittanning-6 Leechburg-26 In front of a capacity crowd, the Cats piled up fumble after fumble to let the Blue Devils end the game with a final score of 26- 6. Although the Cats were ahead by a 6-0 score in the first quarter, the smooth running Leechburg team ran wild over the K.H.S. eleven. ' ' .L,,. W- Lyyv, 7 Pb xi Sf -'Q S' ,. 5- 4 Y:- ,..,, LL,, . LTHOUGH their record this year was not out- sta.nding, the jtmior Varsity has the makings of a future varsity team. l-Iindered by ineligibilities and injuries, the team, headed by new jay Vee coach Roy Vensel, had a different starting lineup for the first few ballgames. Toward the end of the season, the Little Cats became better organized, more familiar with their positions, and began winning ballgames. The outlook of next year's varsity looks promising with this group of fine ball players bolstering the strength of the returning letterrnen. Losing five starters due to ineligibility, the Cats were unable to muster up enough strength to defeat Freeport, thereby losing by a score of 19-7. Outclassed completely by a much larger Butler team, the jays were able to score but twopoints, losing 40-2. Lady luck was not with the Little Cats as the Red Bank Valley Jays eked out a 6-0 victory over the Ven- sel prodigies . 'I'he Wildcats came out in the win column for the first time by defeating Kiski 8-0. The Jay Vees finally started to pick up power as they ran over Shannock Valley by a score of 20-0. The all important extra point was the determining factor as the Little Blue Devils of Leechburg defeated Kittanning 7-6. The jay Vee's had a.n off day as they were de- feated l2-0 by a powerful Vandergrift squad. The junior eleven of K.H .S. ended their 1953 sea- son by defeating the Glasser Jay Vees of Ford City 13-7. The fumbles of the Glassers were their downfall as the Cats monopolized on every error. Luck came to Ford City when they scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Winding up a fair season of two wins, two losses, and a tie, Coach Shepard and the Little Wildcats showed great teamwork as they posted a 19-0 victory over the Tarentum eleven. 91 GRADUATION THOUGHTS OF AN ATHLETE While strolling through the ancient halls Of dear Kittanning High, The senior guys and dolls recall The end is drawing nigh. An end to four long happy years, Ne'er to be had again, Is a prologue to Commencement tears When in their hearts dwell pain. But most of all an athlete brave, When his last game rolls around, Will choke back tears, his pride to save, His ship has ru.n aground. As o'er the playing field he wallcs For that long remembered game, He might look so strong and proud, But it hurts him just the same. He leaves to you, the younger boys, Who will wear the Red and White, A spirit that will never quit Without a mighty fight. The end now looms before youg The door is large, and nearg But out that door with you will go The Wildcats of this year. Yes, out that door with you will go Companions, brave and bold, Whose friendship in your last four years Could ne 'er be bought nor sold. When your proud days are ending, And when your friends are far away, Remember the Wildcats will play again-- Somewhere, on some bright day. I Mr. Roy Vensel, Coach Q , INDER the new tutorship of Coach Roy Vensel, f the '54 Wildcat dribblers won only one third of their appearances. Although they were never out scrapped on the court, the Wildcats couldn't put to- gether a combination capable of scoring more points than their opponents. ln regular Section I play, Kittanning started off by throwing a scare into a towering Butler High School team, but they failed to pull through in the fourth quarter when Butler jumped ahead. Ford City invaded the local hardwood and promptly trounced the boys by twenty-two points . The Wildcats nearly marred the hopes of Section I Champions, Ken High, by leading with only forty sec- onds, but as luck would have it, the Raiders scored twice and led at the final gtm. Kittanning collected its first league victory over Har-Brac by a deciding margin to end the first half of Section I play. The second round started with the Wildcats drop- ping three straight games to Butler, Ford City, and New Kensington before snapping back to drub Har- Brac again in the season's final tilt. The Kittanningteamloses six lettermen, but hope- ful juniors and sophomores are expected to step in and replace the vacancies. DEC, 1 Shaler . . . . . 43 Kittanning . . . . 31 4 Altoona . . Mr. James Rearic, Coach C NDER the direction of the new Junior Varsity basketball coach, James Rearic, the Kittens came through with a fairly successful season. After losing the first two games, the little Cats posted four consecutive wins over Brookville, Leechburg, Apollo and Vandergrift. 'I'he next four games did not prove as successful as the previous four because of keener competition in section play. ln the eight remaining games thejay Vees continued their string of fours, winning four and losing four. Three of the wins were section competition games. Although the junior Cats lack height, they should prove valuable to Mr. Vensel in his second year of coaching at Kittarming Higi School.
