The following hoys earned the varsity for cross- eountry: Craig Cox, Harry Gray, Howard Leavens, Ron- ald Lendyak, Paul Patton, George Phillips, Arnold Thies- feldt, and james WVray. This year's team was exceptionally successful as a first-year competitor. Next season promises to he even better. And already KIIS has a state champon in Howard Leavens who placed fourth in the State Championship Meet at State College on November 18. About 100 hard-working boys turned out for the 2341-mile grind when the season began early in Septem- ber. These fellows trained under the able leadership of Coach T. H. Pnar, a former track star in his own right. In dual competition this season, the VVildcat harriers failed to bring home the hacon to papa Penarw in three races. In their trips to Schenley Park and Amhridge, they faired much better as their previous experience showed up to good advantage. Penaris thinclads drop- ped meets to Connellsville, Brentwood, and Aliquippa. Their encounter with the Connellsville Cokers was the first race in which the boys ever competed, and the previously experienced Cokers were just too much. Phillips placed third in the race and first for the KHS harriers. Leavens did not run. NVhen Kittanning tangled with Aliquippa, they ran into the best team in Pennsylvania. The Quippers lived up to all advance notices and gave the inexperienced Kats a sound trouncing. cury for the Kats, took top honors in the race as he easily romped home with the first place position. A last min- ute spurt by the Brentwooders afforded them a narrow victory. At Amhridge, the WVildeats came into their own as they copped third spot in a field of seven teams at a meet that consisted of teams which entered in the sport for the first time in this part of the state. Once more Leavens carried the banner for our school as he captured second position. Only Canons- hurg who won the meet and Beaver came in ahead of the VVildcats. As it was, Beaver edged the KHS runners hy a mere two point margin. In the WPIAL meet held on Pittsburgh's Schen- ley Park, Kittanning came home with seventh place out of a field of thirteen teams. Leavens crossed the tape in tenth place out of a field of two hundred runners and thus earned the right to compete in the state finals at State College. Harry Cray, a freslnnan, barely missed qualifying for the state finals hy finishing twenty-second, just two places away from qualification. The Constitution and By-Laws of the K.H.S. Board of Activities state that its purpose is 'Lto promote the efficiency of all school activities through a unification of controlf' In other words, it serves as an advisory body, a clearing house, a controlling council for all scholastic activities, and is a senior organization or Senate, whereas the Student Council recently organized, is a Iunior body or House of Representatives. The Council will probably take care of all Home Room decisions and problems pertaining to the arate clubs, classes and other school organiza- tions. There are twelve members of the Board of Activities, namely the Superintendent of Schools CD11 Ned Cullerj, the High School Principal QM11 H. T. Each Wednes- day a meeting is held at which all officers and representatives of the home-rooms of the Iunior- Senior High School for their alternates? must be present unless there is a very urgent reason for their absence. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss student problems for the betterment of the High School, and to co-ordinate home- room procedure with the Student Council. Each year Spring brings with it the excitement of selecting the May Queen and her attendants for Kittanning High School. lt is an animal occurrence in which many of the students and teachers take part, either in the pageant itself, or behind the scenes. In 1946, the Coronation took place on the evening of May 4th on the spacious McCain house lawn that provided an ideal setting for such an affair. The Court entertainment included music by the orchestra, which also played the processional and the recessional, singing by the junior Chorus and a sextette of Senior girls, and dancing. During the early part of April, five girls are elected by each class, two of Whom are finally chosen according to their popularity and scholastic achieve- ment to he attendants to the queen. The May Queen, who is from the Senior Class, and the Maid of Honor, who is from the Junior Class, are elected by the entire high school. It has been the tradition to keep their identities a secret until the night of the Coronation. The May Day festivities, including the dance, are sponsored by the Board of Activities. The members, in Cooperation with the faculty, take charge of the elections and all of the arrangements relating to the event. Kitvhon-ne - 94 EATURE fs , i fa 'iw 4, iff? 12 'T a 7 'iii . fi JK! H. S. classmate, Dick Van Sice who is tops,' as a sports writer. Upon entering the office whom should I bump into the best sob sister in the city, Patty Fink. Patty directed me to Dickis office on the 64th floor. As the elevator stopped to dis- charge passengers on the fourth floor, whose name should I glimpse on an oflice door opposite the elevator but Robert DeLancey, District At- torney. Overcome with astonishment, I was still staring at quickly passing floors when there flashed by on different doors such names as: Nor- ton, Hoover, and Starr, Inc. Public Accountants, Mitzi Krizmanich, Woman Surgeon, Leonard Moscato, Brain Specialist, Lou White, Labora- tory Technician, and Marjie Van Dyke, Pan- American Interpreter. Reaching the 64th floor in a somewhat as- tounded condition, I headed directly for Dick's office. After chatting for a half hour, he said he had a surprise for me. Taking me by the arm he ushered me to the most famous reporter in the newspaper field-none other than Don Clark Kent Serene-better known as Superman. There Dick left me to renew my old friendship. Don and I fell to discussing former classmates as I related to him my surprise at glimpsing the names of successful members of old 'i47v on my upward journey to his oflice. Whereupon, Don reminded me of our class prophecy in which our seers stated the future greatness of the mem- bers of the Class of 47',. Thus we fell to argu- ing about the truth of this prophecy and Don took the initiative in proving to me the true great- ness of former classmates. Prestol He changed into Superman and whirled me off on one of his famous telescopic tours. In a matter of seconds we arrived in Pitts- burgh where Don pointed out the Rebolt build- ing, a model of perfect form and structure and a monument to the ability of its designer. Flash- ing his telescopic eye within the building, Don revealed to me the main offices and their occu- pants some of which I must relate. We found here the noted Radio City Hall where some of the star performers in the dramatization of Fal- settiis renown play Memories of K. H. S. were lack Paine, Bonnie Bowser, Nancy Pullano, Pete Starr, Bob Shaffer, Pat Scanlon, Eileen Shank and Mary Ethel Schaeffer. From Pittsburgh we flashed to Chicago where Don paused at the Soldiers Field Stadium where the alumni of K. H. S. were playing the All Stars. Led by Lolly Montgomery, Pat Fink and Pat Weaver, the crowd cheered in a frenzy of excitement as Rodger Olinger went over for another touchdown with the help of his team- mates some of whom We recognized as: Paul Mohney, Mike Lukehart, Pete Graff, Dan Boyle- stein, Chuck Snyder, and Bill Clever. Leaving the stadium proud of our victorious team, we visited Smith and Smith Inc., manu- facturers of the world famous breakfast food Winnie,s Mushf, Here the wealthy Messrs. Dean and Harold Smith insisted that we visit their main offices where they assured us some of the faces would be familiar, the first surprise I received was when I saw jim Painter seated behind a desk, his title was the Bookkeeper with Marion Rhodes as his Secretary. Their Personnel Manager was Clyde Daugherty. Tony Stillson and john Perry were the Health inspectors while Iune Kness and Betty Anthony were the firm's nurses. From Chicago we dashed to Nome, Alaska, Don already had his eye turned upon the famous William Kalb Gold Mines. Here also we encoun- tered our former class president, Hugh Hutch- ison and his associates joe Bonner and Colleen McAfoose employed in secret research work for the U. S. Government. Suddenly Don seemed to sense some danger, so scooping me up we were off again toward the Atlantic coast. His premonition proved right for here we found in dire distress several of our brilliant explorers whom we soon discovered to be Skip Rood, Bob Toy. Bob Enterline and Sam Best. Don immediately rescued them from the iceberg on which their ship was stranded and saw them safely afloat. Impatient to return to his office, Don turned our flight homeward. We did stop at Carnegie Hall as one last sight. How amazed I was to see Carolyn Iordan singing the 'iDesert Songv while Professor Bertram Brooks led the orchestra in accompaniment. We see in the orchestra pit David Pryde and George Shenk, both well known musicians, the eminent pianist Ioyce McLachlan, all with this orchestra. Among the socialites at- tending the opera was world famous writer, Kiki Heilman. Among the others seated near her was the handsome playboy, Frank Zambotti, the great etiquette writer, Peggy Eckner, the well known night club dancer, Helen Harker, and the Spanish professor at the University, Shirley Harrold. I could no longer impose upon Donis time and so suggested our return to the office of the New York Times. On our return trip I admitted that Don had won the argument and that few classes had graduated such outstanding citizens as the dear old class of '47.
