This is the universal motto of the Senior Class, and you never saw a merrier crowdg always out for the best of life, whether in work or in play. A class of which you are proud to be a member, and for which you will give your best. This was first evidenced four years ago when we entered the high school as Freshmen. Of course we were made to feel insignificant to the upper classes, but two hundred and Hfty students were not to be kept out of the foreground. We began to take part in the school activi- ties, and it was soon realized what an important class was that of '35, The most outstanding memory of our Freshman days is that of our class election at which time we chose John Moyer as our president. Even then our good judgment came to the front as shown by the fact that john has continued to guide our class efficiently for all four years. We here pay tribute to this leader for his capable management. In our Sophomore year the Class of '3.5 appeared more than ever in the limelight. By that time our reputation as a bunch of go-getters' was established. Not one of us has forgotten the success of our first social activity, the Sophomore Hop on Saint Patrick's Day. Our class also won laurels in athletics by carrying off the honors in class basketball. Then we came to the status of Juniors. This year we branched out in activities and we found our class well represented in athletics, musical organizations, literary societies. Aside from these various activities, our class was noted for their high scholastic standing in all depart- ments. Socially, We launched a brilliant Junior Masque and an enjoyable Junior-Senior Party. And now our Senior year is fast drawing to a dramatic close. This year, more than any other, our class has forged ahead. We successfully published the high school paper The Wild- cat, we sponsored a Valentine Dance featuring Jack Hill's orchestra, we staged a clever class play entitled Dollars to Doughnuts, which not only afforded us great pleasure but also aided us financially. Kittanning High School justly awarded members of our class with many athletic letters for their service to the school. We are, at present, facing plans for graduation and our final social activities. We are making elaborate plans for a fitting climax to our high school days-the Senior Banquet. lt promises to surpass all social functions that we have sponsored and we fully intend that it shall. We cannot foretell the future that looms before us, but we know that as the class of '35 has gone on for four years, so will it continue in the future. And as it has climbed steadily into prominence, so will it continue to climb. And as our motto has been lived, so will it always be lived- Merry have We met, and merry have We beeng Merry let us part, and merry meet again. , V, l U - I :ncaa .sauna :mea s 1 I 1 4 D 4 F orty-three Ol milf-new 11915151 ra Ilfrmfansuslal Class Song of '35 A toast to our dear high school The place we all adore The scenes we leave behind us In which we'll meet no more. I ITII-HAJNIHIHI CLASS DAY PROGRAM IT'S ALWAYS SPRINGTIME Spring has come to Brownlee College campus and with it the annual Senior prom, Everyone is agog with excitement as preparations for the social event of the year get under way. The janitor in his most thorough manner clears away the last wad of gum from Headley Hall, the college queen adopts a new sweetie , Sunshine Shaffer adds another uglooml' to his credit, while even the Faculty irons out a few wrinkles from its brow and prepares to take another fling at romance. ln fact, education is laid on the shelf for the time being while the whole college from the greenest freshie to the grayest prof anticipates the inauguration of Commencement Week. In the midst of all this delightful confusion, an announcement from the dean is posted. In black and white with no mistaking its meaning, it declares that all social activities are off until after the term exams, and that no student who has lower than a B rating in any sub- ject shall participate in that delightfully delirious whirl, the Senior prom.', This appalling announcement has a paralyzing effect upon the student body in general, but upon Molly, the dean's lovely daughter in particular. She realizes that the light of her romantic young life, Ginger', Lee, has never come in contact with a B in all his career. Of course he dances divinely, and his eyes are a soft brown, but even these manly attributes cannot pull a B from good old Cicero, the Latin prof or influence Pythagoras of the math department. Ginger,' is a popular campus idol of both the male and the female of Brownlee. He has made more touchdowns than any other player on the team, he is the fastest man on track. He has so many letters for athletic prowess that his room resembles alphabet soup. In fact, this divine being can do anything but gather knowledge from the printed page. A conference is held. Ginger must not faill In a secret session behind closed doors it is decided to draft the services of Booky Lewis and Strangler,' Pedelli. The former is to introduce Ginger to the flowery path of knowledge and the latter is to see that he stays there,-at least till after exams, So, with the help of these two gentlemen and a few brothers from Ginger's frat, and with the backing of the whole female part of the student body Ginger is maneuvered through the intricacies of obtaining a B. Such little aids as writing a trig problem on one's cuff, or copying the endings of Latin nouns on one's Bnger nails just as a reminder during a test are not overlooked. As the day for the Senior prom', nears, it is learned with relief that Ginger has just pulled throughf' Everybody is happy as the whirl of Commencement Week begins. But from the window of his office the dean smiles enigmatically to himself as he sees Ginger, hurrying across the campus with a book under one arm, and on the other, the girl of his dreams. E. T. Having thus far shown itself worthy of responsibility, the class undertook all its duties enthusiastically. The Juniors may justly be proud of the initiative and originality of its members who excel in every variety of activities. Their first social attempt was the successful Junior Mzlsque that was held in October and that proved an occasion of characteristic decorations and fun. Then, since time had graciously bestowed upon them the title of Upperclassmen, and in appre- ciation, the Juniors gave the Seniors an attractive Senior-Junior 'lProm. The Sophomores are well represented in athletics, dramatics, music, and scienceg it even had two flower girls in the lLWOl1l2lHlCSS Wedding. The outstanding social event of the Sophomore Year was the annual Hop, held on April 26. Here, guided by Miss lVlcGarx'ey and Mr. Alter, the class advisers, they became acquainted at a party in the gym and later elected officers. These Freshmen are determined to make a success of their four years of High School Life. IlTlI'1lAlNlNlEl FOOTBALL if The football season of 1934 was, without doubt, the most spectacular season since the Crimson Cyclone of 1929. This year the team, on account of the etlicicnt management of Mr. Rote, was able to play seven of its ten games under the Hood lights on the Gilpin Athletic Field. These lights were installed as a part of the new athletic program at Kittanning High School. The coach Harold S. Stuckliouse John S. Rota' l l ,y0,,c,, of 4,H,,,,,,,,.N A1,,,,,,,q,,,. of A,,,,,,,,,,,.N and the players are to be commended highly for their untiring efforts to produce a team worthy of our school. Iincouraged by the victory over Apollo in the first game, the team gained a large following. Approxi- mately 2,500 people attended each home game. The people of the community were very much elated over the change in attitude of the boys this year and they prophesied in the near future the rise of Kitanning in Athletics. Mainly from this cause, Mentor Stackhouse changed the nickname of his red and white charges from the Kitties to the Wildcats. The team as a whole this year was an improvement over last year's and leaves a mark that will be an aim for next year's squad. The prospects for 193g are very favorable and, with the support of the student body and of the community, a good season can be expected. JOHN LOUDEN RM Guard Red showed Kittanning Hi that he really could play basketball. valley that he became a threat to every opponent. We do not like to lose a player so efficient as Red. His ability was so noted over the VERN CABLE Has Forward Bus played a great game of basketball for K. H. S. and proved to all that he was a reliable player by coming through when needed. We sincerely hope that we may be sure of Bus next year. VINCENT CURREN Bing Guard Bing is a great guard and gave all he had for K. H. S. After his great success this season, you can imagine what Bing will be like when he returns to play here for the next two years. ROBERT BANKS Plumber Guard Plumber started this year at forward but he was later shifted to the guard position where he showed up very favorably. We have Plumber back next year to help out and we are sure that his aid will be of great importance to IQ36,S team. SIDNEY SEDWICK Sid Forward Sid was not a regular at the beginning of the season but he soon made his ability known by stepping up to the first team. We lose Sid this year and it only makes the task greater for Simmons who will have to find a forward to equal Sid. BERT BRUMBAUGH Bert Guard Bert came here from Ken Hi and succeeded in making the squad. Although he did not play regular, he was always reliable reserve material and his loss will be suffered next year. JOHN CALLAS Kong Guard Kong may be big but he can get around that floor plenty fast. He was substituted in many close games and never once lost his head. We will miss him greatly next year at basketball season. OGDEN JOHNSON Og Forward Although Og was not a regular all season, he was always around when a good player was needed. He participated in many good games and we feel certain that he will repeat this next year as a regular. JAMES CALLAS Jimmy Manager When you watch a basketball game, you never consider anyone except players. Too frequently we forget the manager. There has to be someone who handles the equipment and who does all the hard work. jimmy may be small but he did a very successful job as manager this season. FRED SERRAO Freddy Assistant Manager Not only was Freddy a good manager but he also was a great assistance to Jimmy. GIRLS' GYM CLASS .Sli.I'llV'l'IlIl,l, lm 'C' ITIHIEI-lllolslfslg IKIIITIHIAJNINIEI WRE TLI G This year marked the second season for wrestling at Kittanning High School. Under the watchful eye of Coach Harold L. Stackhouse, the boys drilled daily and succeeded in winning practically every match in which they participated. After match- ing their skill against all the schools of this section, they were forced to search far to find a team that could offer a competitive bout which could satisfy the large following that the team had gained among the students and townspeople. Because of their superior skill and craftiness, the boys attained fame throughout all the schools of this region. The great ability of Stackhouse as a wrestling coach was not known until he built up this strong team. He was mentioned in several papers, and he received much praise for the way he handled the boys in this new sport. Although he had started training the boys last season and although he had practically all of his material back this year, the improvement was still very noticeable. YVith such an im- provement taking place next season, we wonder where Coach Stackhouse will find good enough competition in order to afford his large crowds an interesting match. 4 4 4 This year's program for the girls' gym classes was divided into two main divi- sions: Hrst, lvlajor Sports consisting of volley ball, basketball, and mush ball, second, general gymnasium program consisting of general routine work. The routine work of the various classes was diversified. The interesting program undertaken by the girls included rhythm, tap dancing, tumbling, and pyramid building. This daily exercise was interspersed with tumbling apparatus work, relays, games, and marching. The girls undertook their gym exercises with a will that could only bring success- ful results. The Senior High School gym classes showed a fine spirit of sportsmanship that aided in bringing about an excellent training. From these classes were chosen the participants in the leading sports and these girls showed the benefits of a well-disciplined program. VVe justly applaud these gym classes for the demonstration of their ability to quickly grasp the essentials of physical education. McGregor, gained considerably during the school year with approximately seven hundred boys participating in football, basketball, track, and playground ball. The objective is teaching organized play to as many boys as possible. These boys were capably coached by men of the high school faculty. At the end of each season, they were awarded certificates for participation, sportsmanship, and de- pendability. Their championship teams were given emblems showing the sport, league, and year when earned. One hundred ninety-eight boys played football during the season. There were three leagues comprised of pupils from seventh to eleventh grades. The basketball group included four hundred and ninety interested boys from fifth to twelfth grades. Class teams were organized from the best intramural material. Four track and field meets were held during the season and three playground ball leagues were organized. Thus ended the extensive intramural program for this year and we are sure to see many of these boys take part in the varsity competition of years to come. 4 4 4 GIRLS' BASKETBALL Since the girls' varsity basketball team was abolished several years ago, the inter- class games have been the main features in which the girls of Kittanning High have participated. Two leagues-the Senior High League composed of the upper three classes and the Junior High League made up from members of the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades-were formed. The Go-Gettersf' captained by Martha Larimer, carried off the laurels in the Senior League, the Good-Sports, lead by Edith Millioronzi, won the championship in the Junior League. Another team with Jane Rohrer as leader won honors when it copped the intramural title for seventh grade. At the close of the basketball season, emblems were awarded to the winning teams of both leagues. Certificates of merit were given to all those who participated in any of the basketball games. All the games were played after school in the high school gymnasium. The Gym Assistants' Club aided Miss MacGregor in refereeing and in umpiring the games. Suc- cess in all these games is due to the girls themselves and to the capable coaching of Miss Sally MacGregor. This organization controls the finances and directs the extra-curricula and athletic ac- tivities of the school. The purpose of the Board of Activities is to promote the efiici- ency of all the school activities through a unification of control. The students of Kittanning High School feel that this Board has not failed in its course. The mem- bership of the board consists of two representatives from each of the three classes of the high school, two faculty members, one alumnus, one member of the Board of Educa- tion, the Superintendent, and the Principal of the high school. Meetings are held several times a semester or whenever a matter of importance warrants the meeting of the board. This organization is important, not only because of its control in the school, but also because it tends to bring the student body into closer contact with the superin- tendent, principal and faculty members of the high school. if af, if THE LIBRARY CLUB One Wednesday noon, a visitor chanced to be walking through a corridor of the Central Building, suddenly his attention was attracted by a rather large room-47c. Curious as to what purpose this room served, he opened the door, there, to his sur- prise, he found a large group of girls, eating and chatting affably. He was about to close the door when one of the group rose to address the assem- bly. Feeling more than an ordinary interest he asked what the object of the meet- ing might be. Not until then did he discover that he had interrupted a weekly meet- ing of the Library Club. Miss Mildred Mateer, the faculty adviser, set the visitor's curiosity at rest by telling what she and her pupils accomplished during the year. The main objective of this departmentf, began Miss Mateer, is to train them in the simple fundamentals of library work and to teach them to take charge of the School Library efficiently. The visitor took his leave, saying to himself: The Library Club of Kittanning High School must surely be worth while. NATIONAL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP SOCIETY OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS lfiyfllly-Iivar ITII-llelwlllolslslg Inj IITIHIAINIDQEI NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC HONOR SOCIETY OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS This spring, twenty-one students of the Senior Class were informed that they had been selected for membership in the local chapter of the National Scholastic Honor Society of Secondary Schools. - These students were judged worthy of membership by a committee comprised of eight members of the high school faculty. To be eligible for the society the student must stand in the first fourth of the class, must have spent at least one year in the Kit- tanning High School, and must have the unanimous approval of the council on the basis of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Names of the pupils are pro- posed by any member of the faculty, but the most that can be chosen is fifteen per cent of the entire Senior Class. The members of this year's class may nightly feel honored in that they were chosen from a large list of contestants. It is now their duty to promote the object of this chap- ter. In adhering to these responsibilities, they may feel themselves pledged to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire for rendering service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the pupils of Kittanning High School. ll- 4 4 NATIONAL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP SOCIETY OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS This organization, founded several years ago, has as its purpose the fostering of high scholarship among athletes, the stimulation of the desire for balanced training, and the development of more outstanding leaders in the secondary schools of the United States. The membership consists entirely of those boys who earn an athletic letter and whose average in school work for three consecutive years is liigher than the general average of the school. Once a year the advisers of the society arrange a banquet to welcome new members to the fold, and such an event is the occasion of much fun- makingf' including as it does the initiation ceremonies. The lettermen of the various sports are also honored, although not all of them are members, by several celebrations held at appropriate times and by little gifts such as much-coveted sweaters, given in appreciation of their fine work during the season. This year no new members were added, and consequently those already belonging feel more than ever the great honor they en joy. The young people reflected credit on their coach, Miss Mildred Gibson, and won merited applause for themselves by perfection in their lines and by their splendid portrayal of the characters in Dollars to Doughnuts. The stage set- tings Were also attractive and added much to the enjoyment of the production. The story is a complex one of the farcical type, the action taking place at the country home of James Boland, a wealthy business man, and encompasses the efforts of the Boland girls, Caroline and Hortense, to win their chosen ones. The efforts of the family to make one man feel that the family is poor and, at the same time, to impress another with their wealth bring in action difficult to stage successfully. The members of the cast are to be congratulated on their work which betokened long hours of practice and rehearsal-all for the glory of the Class of '35. i' 'Ir ir DRAMATIC CLUB Since the need of student development along the line of dramatic art was in much evidence, Miss Mildred Gibson re-organized the Dramatic Club this year. The main purpose of this club is to train students for platform reading so that they can appear before an audience with grace and ease. Special attention is also given to devel- oping an appreciation for dramatics, to the culture of the voice, and to lyric action. Further, this is a course in personal development in which the student learns to think clearly and to discover possibilities in himself never dreamed of before. Any good character study will bring out the best dramatic qualities in an individual, this has been portrayed by the discovery of several good amateur players in the club. Besides, the course helps to develop within the student a deep appreciation for good literature. During the year, a number of plays were given. The programs that have already been given were unusually successful and we look forward to the remainder of the selections of this term. , I' U if BB - H IIIIIB naman SB Eighty-five Imp l.'rnr: IP. Guided by Mademoiselle I-leilman, the club mentally traversed the streets of Paris, stopping to admire and to discuss such his- toric spots as L'Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame. There were Crepe Suzettes, those tingling pan-cakes no American can make, eaten at Ciro'sg filet de sole at ll'Iarguery's, strolls in le Bois de Boulogneg and shopping on La Rue de la Paix. The period of the French Revolution was particularly discussed in these weekly wanderings from class-room routine. Napoleon and Josephine were brought out of the shadows to become again living, breathing, romantic figures through the medium of la Mal- maison, seen only in pictures. Even some French art found its way there and some novels, such as the famous Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. The entire ground covered held a personal appeal to the club not only as French students but also as ordinary human beings seeking crumbs of culture from the lavish table of Education. if if if SIGMA DELTA Time stands still, we mofve on. Through this organization of the school, the students of the different science de- partments are given an opportunity to cooperate. The members of the Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and General Science Departments have taken advantage of this opportunity to meet and discuss new happenings in the world of science. To be eligible to the club, a student must have a grade of a one or a high two. This incentive has spurred its thirty members to greater efforts of attainment. At the general assemblies, the students may each report upon a suitable subject of common interest. The club has elected no officers this year but is directed by the science teachers-Mr. Baker, Mr. Schiedemantel, Mr. Matisko, and Mr. Simmons. The club sponsors many entertaining projects. Among these are field trips, small social functions, the National Gorgas Essay Contest, the Nature Contest at Carnegie Museum, and an annual trip to Pittsburgh to visit museums, conservatories, and other places of scientific interest. .These many projects inspire the students of the science departments to strive to become' members of this popular club. This club, a state organization, was launched upon its sixth year of active work under the capable leadership of the president, Maude Early. The Club's member- ship is composed of girls from the junior and Senior Classes. The members of the Tri-Hi-Y have displayed united service in their extensive and worthy work. The bounds of their social work, which is carried on throughout the school year, are limitless. This local club has well advanced welfare work by distributing Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, also by observing Bundle Day. During the year, the club does not neglect social activities. The girls endeavor to have at least one party a month and they also have some joint parties with the Hi-Y-Club. The high school girls are guided in their principles by representatives from three of the main training agencies: Home, Church, and School, which they serve in their objective- To seek, to find, to sharef' df df df HI -Y ffydd who me young have d world to build, The future :hall be what you have willed. The Hi-Y Club was organized this year by the State Student Secretary, Mr. Kohl, who called the boys together early in the fall of '34. A large group of boys responded to this summons, and the club was formed from members of the Sopho- more, junior, and Senior Classes. The weekly meetings were held in room IIC on Wednesday nights when the boys carried on group discussions. These meetings were well attended by loyal members who enjoyed giving careful consideration to the various problems confronting the high school student. These discussions were made more entertaining by local speakers. The social activities of the Club conducted throughout the year were rather extensive. The club participated in a joint skating party with younger members of several local churches. The club also took charge of a Christmas party spon- sored by the Salvation Army for the poor children of the community. Many other social activities were enjoyed by the club throughout the school term. In both social and club activities the boys have successfully endeavored to live up to their purpose- To Create, Maintain and Extend Throughout the School and Community High Standards of Christian Character. GY ASSISTAN S' CLUB - I-IRI'-I llolslslg i y IKI I ITIHIAININIEI BANK CASHIERS' CLUB Until a few years ago banking was conducted in the high school by the teachers. In recent years, the student cashiers were given this duty that will be of great value throughout their lives. They now carry out this idea of student participation. Two or more students are in charge of banking every Tuesday in each home room, one being elected by the members of the home room to which they belong and the other appointed by the home room teacher. The cashiers receive, credit, and turn in deposits to the adviser who checks and sends them to the bank. Soon after the opening of school in September, the club is organized. A weekly meeting is held at noon each Wednesday. At these meetings rules of banking and methods of procedure are discussed, frequently an employee of the bank or a success- ful cashier of the club is invited to speak. Friendly rivalry exists at all times between the Senior and Junior High Schools, each trying to reach the highest percentage for the week. To further stimulate interest in banking an award is made by the Armstrong County Trust Company to each pupil who regularly deposits. More valuable than any material award received is the habit of saving regularly. 'A' 'Ir ak GYM ASSISTANTS' CLUB Because of the eager enthusiasm of the girls to participate in class and intra- mural sports, Miss MacGregor organized a club that enabled girls to prove ability in physical development. This organization was so popular that it has outlived a dura- tion of three years and now claims more participants than in former years. The work done by this selected group of girls is very successful and is a great aid to the instruc- tress. The assistants are chieliy chosen on a rating of mental and physical development. These assistants then take entire charge of intra-mural sports and, in some cases, have progressed to a stage where they can skillfully instruct class routine on the gym floor. In the early fall, these girls ably directed volley ball teams, and in a later season, capably managed the basketball season-chosing the teams, arranging playing sched- ules, and refereeing all games. To be chosen as a gym assistant has now become the ambition of all sport partici- pants, and these leaders with their instructress are to be commended for this spread- ing enthusiasm. - I +----65 Ninety-one SENIQR ORCHE TRA af V . ,- . ,, . . . . , . llllw-wl-rl' I'm14-M.-n- llnu.-X X. unlmrrnzzz Imn-I XI.
