The Language Department tb hetter acquaint the students with the language. customs, history, liter- ature, and sights of France is the aim of the French classes. as stated hy Miss Helen lf. Heilman. The students, after an extensive study of grammar, read in class the hooks of famous French authors. Starting during the second year with L'.'Xhhe Constantin hy Halevy, and with Les Uherlesu hy llazin, those who can take third year French are prepared for more diliicult work. The third year students read hooks hy Alexander llumas, Pierre Iioteg and one of the comedies of Moliere. Special attention is given to the idioms in all this reading. The object of the Spanish department is principally the same. Miss Kath- erine Stivanson endeavored during the year to teach the students adequate Spanish and to cause an appreciation of Spanish literature. Secondarily, the students learn enough Spanish to converse in the language fairly well. ln the Latin department, which has grown in Kittanning High School in proportion as in other schools, the tirst purpose, as carried out by Miss Mabel Shatter and Miss Mary Lindeman, is to teach the students to translate Latin. The second aim is to improve the students' knowledge of linglish by drilling in the Latin constructions and vocabulary. The third and most interesting point is to acquaint the students within the Roman civilization. To aid, the Latin classes organized a club The Roman Circle. The students this year have taken greater interest in Latin than ever before. i f,..,,....t .,.... ,....-..,.- ..,.. ...,....... ..... ,. . -. ..A...,.,......
