HER Again today I saw her, Alone In a world filled with people, Reaching For someone or something, Needing The companionship of a sincere person, Wishing For a feeling of fulfillment. Why can ' t she see her loneliness is her own decision? She has just to reach a little farther, Possess just a little more confidence, Hoping will get her nowhere. The persons who could cope with life alone Are the people who make the best of what they have. Maybe tomorrow when I glance at her reflection She will have accepted she has as much to give as everyone else: And she will no longer be Alone. ANONYMOUS No more do leaves get blown in the air It ' s papers and wrappers everywhere. No more does nature edge the way It ' s butts and bags and stale decay. THE PARK There is a mirage in this asphalt desert called the Park. It is so important, the city officials, have a special place for It in their budget. The Park stands where the parking lot would have, had Fate decreed it. The trees that stand there in perfect rows were selected for maximum shade and minimum care. Each flower in the rectangular flower bed is two and three -sevenths inches from the next one. The grass was specially transported by Van Hugh Trucking Service from a field outside the desert. The green hedges get clipped once a week by the city gardener. There is even a real live brook that was put in two months ago. The out houses were painted orange last year, and this year the trash cans will match. There is a mirage in this asphalt desert called The Park. Peg Tittle ADELINE Like a little baby she sat and rocked ceaselessly back and forth creaking and squeaking her bones and the wood her fingers stiff with arthritis and her toes blue with the cold. She shut her eyes and visions of her life came to her- the time she had been so happy because she was allowed to go swimming with her brothers in the water -hole and when she had first touched cold snow -so long ago- all so long ago. She touched the old and weathered lace on the edge of her yellowed dress and she thought of the day she had been married so long ago -a 11 so long ago- everything done and finished now- everything over- her life had been lived she was finished she would lie, an empty shell in the earth, but her soul would burn on forever.
