This everyone appreciates on at least one day- that is, today, the day you are reading this volume. For most of the student body at K .C .1 . , the Grumbler is something they expect to receive, every spring, of high qual- ity and reasonable price because tradition has made it that way. For those same people, for three hundred and sixty - four days a year there is little concern for the small number of people and the tremendous amount of their work that make the Grumbler a memorable publication. So that if you are a reader and you think a word of thanks is due for Grumbler ' 73, give it to any or all of the editorial staff members next time you see them. But, better still, resolve now to come out next year and help in future productions. Keep your ears open in September ' 73 for annoucements about Grumbler organizational meetings. You can help and you will be welcome! But to part of the KCI student body must go a very special thanks. They are those dedicated people responsible for this issue. They are editors, writers, artists, photographers, typists, advertising salesmen and a hundred and one others who devoted hours- many hours- to this successful edition of the Grumbler. They will carry forever memories of hard work, frustration and achievement in the production for this volume and few will say they wouldn ' t do it all again if they had another chance. They are worthy of our praise as the preservers of the proud tradition that is KCI! P. Templin. Caesar Photography Bernd Mueller, Mark Muldover, Dave Boswell, Mark Langdon and others A lot of people helped with all the odds ' n ends involved in producing a yearbook. Their help was invaluable. They included- Jill Cross, Cathy Burn, Cheryl Weber, Diane Bergen, Karen Tuchlinski, David Pohl, Jim Oswald, Cynthia Carlisle. Thanks also to all those who contributed literary and artwork, to everyone who helped identify pictures and to Mr. Templin, Mr. Caesar, and Mr. Eccles for their help and understanding. A school is a building and an institution, but more important, a school is people - individuals who, in effect, create the school. In Grumbler ' 73 we have tried to show KCI, not as just a building and classes, but as a meeting place of people and ideas. We used the theme, ' Nostalgia ' and at sever- al places in the book we have made use of pic- tures from old yearbooks. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did. Being editor this year has taught me alot. I was at times confronted with enthusiasm and will ingness, but more often with irresponsibility and apathy. We ' ve had our misunderstandings and argu- ments, but now that its all over, I ' d like to say thanks to everyone for their help and co-operat- ion in the production of Grumbler ' 73. I ' d also like to apologize for any omissions or mistakes which occur in this issue. Marilyn Anthes, Susan Day, Lynn Cross, Editor. Jean Campbell, Head Girl Sandy Maclntyre, Head Boy The year has passed so quickly that already we find it is time to say goodbye and thank-you. What we learned during our time as Head Boy and Head Girl is something neither of us would want to trade. There were good times and of course a fair share of bad times. To Mr. Eccles we say thank-you for patience and advice, to Mr. Craig for understanding and the execut- ive for help. For those who will never return to KCI may you have success and happiness and to the undergrads who plan to come back, give some of yourself to the school. For us it is the end of high school life but for you next year is a new beginning. Use the opportunity. 72-73 was an enjoyable year for both of us. Thank- you for all you have given us. We close as usual. Mac and Jean Executive FIRST ROW: Tom Hiller, Janet Poetker, Jean Campbell, Sandy Mclntyre, Cheryl Weber, Brian Henry. T. Craig Principal ' s Message One of the greatest challenges we will have to face evet is before us now; the challenge is to match our educational programmes to the individual needs of the student and to the demands and needs of the community. The Credit System in which the student has freedom of choice in selecting courses and in which promotion is by subject does much to meet part of the challenge. Liaison with business and industry through the research that our tech- nical and commercial departments are doing at the present time will help us to meet another part of the challenge. The Semester Programme, to be introduced at K-W C V S in the fall of 1973, will achieve the following goals: (a) the student will concentrate on at least three and not more than four subjects in each semester. The success of the Waterloo County Board of Education ' s Summer School programmes indicates that such concentration creates great- ter interest and allows greater intensity of study which results in better achievement. (b) the student will be responsible to three or four teachers in each semester; the assignments and homework will be in three or four subject areas rather than in seven or eight as is now the case. (c) periods three and four, which are the lunch periods, overlap; thus each teacher and each student is guar- anteed at least thirty-seven minutes for lunch. Classes will be finished at three twenty-one which will allow for greater involvement in extracurricular activities. (d) student timetables generally will be more compact than previously, with fewer spares. (e) teachers will see half their students each semester; this should deepen the staff-student relationship and promote the type of co-operation among the parent, the student and the teacher which is necessary for academic success. For these goals to be reached, much hard work and dedication by staff and students are necessary. Semester time- tabling, involvement with the community, and the Credit System can only benefit and improve the educational en- vironment at K.C.I, if we all give our best. My sincere congratulations to the editors, the staff and the sponsors of the Grumbler for a very fine Yearbook. To Our Custodians We have paid all due attention To the members of the school We have made all due mention Of scholar and of fool. The names of all are proffered Regardless of position Yet amongst the names here offered. We have made one grave omission. I speak of the men the whole school knows The men who clean up the disorder we make And patiently fix the things that we break When something goes wrong we cry as one man Go get the janitor as fast as you can! The hard working partner in all that we do We offer this tribute, the janitors, to you. You stoke up the furnace and sweep up the hall But the real job you do, is take care of us all. So up with your glasses, and drink with the rest Long live the janitors in KWCVS. an adaptation of a poem written by Farley Mowat for his high school yearbook. ' ,- ■« -. Why can ' t she see her loneliness is her own decision? She has just to reach a little farther, Possess just a little more confidence, Hoping will get her nowhere. Peg Tittle Compliments of FRANK ' S PRODUCE rr THE PARK There is a mirage in this asphalt desert called the Park. It is so important, the city officials, have a special place for It in their budget. The Park stands where the parking lot would have, had Fate decreed it. The trees that stand there in perfect rows were selected for maximum shade and minimum care. Each flower in the rectangular flower bed is two and three -sevenths inches from the next one. The grass was specially transported by Van Hugh Trucking Service from a field outside the desert. The green hedges get clipped once a week by the city gardener. There is even a real live brook that was put in two months ago. The out houses were painted orange last year, and this year the trash cans will match. There is a mirage in this asphalt desert called The Park. Peg Tittle ADELINE Like a little baby she sat and rocked ceaselessly back and forth creaking and squeaking her bones and the wood her fingers stiff with arthritis and her toes blue with the cold. She shut her eyes and visions of her life came to her- the time she had been so happy because she was allowed to go swimming with her brothers in the water -hole and when she had first touched cold snow -so long ago- all so long ago. She touched the old and weathered lace on the edge of her yellowed dress and she thought of the day she had been married so long ago -a 11 so long ago- everything done and finished now- everything over- her life had been lived she was finished she would lie, an empty shell in the earth, but her soul would burn on forever. Opus II played at the successful formal, while Father and the Robbie Charles Trio played at our other dances. A juke Box helped by both adding to the atmosphere of the common room and at the same time contributing funds to the needy projects within the school. Special Events t-shirts don- ned by all, brought out the true blue of our members. Through these and the fan- tastic leadership of Mr. Woodley, Special Events has been nothing but great times this year. The aim of Torch this year was to rescue a fallen com- mittee and establish it once again as a working committee to aid local charities. We had two major projects: two week- long collections, and the adoption of a poor family from Christmas. Thanks to superb publicity, as well as help and suggestions from many students, all our plans this year were successfully completed. FIRST ROW: Mary Spencer, Jennifer Clark, Jill Shaver. Hopefully, the bowling club will participate in the inter-collegiate games but otherwise it will simply continue to bowl at Waterloo Bowling Lanes. Angling The individual fisherman, or angler, is not merely engaged in trying to cat- ch fish, as it would be cheaper to buy fish at a store. He is trying to under- stand the fish ' s environment, and its reaction to it. Organized fishing and hunting associations put far more time and money to better use in conservation work than the fanatical Walt Disney conservationists. The fishing club hopes to foster a stream improvement program, dedicated to pollution control, return- ing fish, and using more sporting met- hods, such as artificial flies. p u b I I c I t y FIRST ROW: Nadia Kostiuk, Cheryl Weber, Caryl Paikin. Writers The Writer ' s was very active publishing several magazines during the year. They had a column in Main- line and ran a contest for writing a story about a parti- cular picture. Several authors visited the school. Edna Staebler invited the club to her home on Sunfish Lake. They used their budget to send a gift to the authors they met to show a token of their appreciation. When life is done there ' s much to reap in foreign clouds, And sail upon the greenest ocean froth, To understand the mysteries that life shrouads. Then gather friends of tribute and of simplest love. To make amends for ever-encompassing hate. So that the majesty of all and every man. May be enjoyed eternally above. R.B.A And I thought we were doing well singing Jingle Bells! During the past year K.C.I. ' s I.S.C.F. club has been in- volved in a number of interesting activities in conjunction with other clubs in our Waterloo County high school system. Most of the regular meetings were again held in the form of Supper Meetings in various homes in the Twin Cities. Special speakers, variety programs, and good food make up the bulk of what goes on at these meetings. We find that they are very helpful in giving those who have spiritual interest or problems some of the answers that Christianity offers. In the fall a special Sports Night was held in our gym, with a good attend- ance and interest. During the winter a Tobogganing Party to- gether with the other high schools was enjoyed by a good num- ber of snow lovers. Last summer and again in this coming summer our club sends at least one or two members to Leadership Camp at Poineer Camp in the Muskoka area. The idea is to assist young people to take responsibility in organizing and assisting in the various I.S.C.F. clubs in our high schools. Staff sponsors i n the past year were Mr. Poyntz and Mr. Boldt. I s c F Math Club This club consists of students who have a special interest in mathematics. Twice a week they meet to prepare for the annual Mathematics Contest. Once a week they meet to participate in inter-school mathema- tics games. Discussion Club This club is open to both teachers and students. Each week the club meets and takes part in an informal debate. Any topic may be discussed. Some past topics have been capital punishment, and truth in advertising. At the moment, membership is quite small, but we hope it will grow! Compliments of WILSON THIBIDEAU BUSLINES LTD. A MURDER, FOR WHICH THERE IS NO TRIAL The grieving soil lies bare, Thus tells the magic tale, Where once magnificent majesty Reigned as the forest ' s king. It bowed to no cruel wind, Nor shied from winter ' s cold. Yet felt the fatal cursed blow Of man ' s unthinking axe. A hundred years of patient time together with The cloudburst ' s praise, And sunshines psalms, And nature ' s love, all slain In one foul moment of such thoughtless haste. And yet, no reverent prayers, Nor left to lie in state, No tears, regret, or sad remorse For such a noble prince. Instead, t ' was beat, and chained, Then made a gallery slave, And now? - perhaps the reluctant host Of these unworthy words. Kerry Lappin. This year was supposed to be a re- building year for the Raider team, but Coach Saddler developed a strong group. Even though the Raiders were expected to finish well down in the standings, they reached the finals in the U. of W. Christmas tournament, won the Twin City Championship, and reached the CWOSSA finals showing that they were to be feared ! Good efforts were turned in all year by grade thirteen players Bob Wagner Ken Dougherty, Doug Hoover, Bernie Hughes, and Barry Goman. Our future hopes look bright with the players who are returning and players moving up from the junior ranks. There are some 1st string players returning who will form the nucleus of our 73 ' 74 Raiders. We think that this is an appropriate place to give special recognition to Bob Wagner who has in his years at KCI con- tributed a great deal to the success of our teams. But all the players deserve to be congratulated for the immense improve- ment during the season and their great team effort . Compliments of Red, Yellow, Black Power! KCI ' s wrestling team had a very commendable season this year winning 14 consecutive dual meets for a perfect season. Combined with last years performance their dual meet record is 27 wins, 1 loss in two years. After winning the dual meet championship KCI went on to win the Twin City Tournament Championship dethroning St. Jeromes who had held the title for 6 consecutive years. Individual winners in the tournament were Dave Zarzycki at 90 lbs. , Larry Zepf at 123 lbs. , and Bob Emptage at 168 lbs. Frank and Steve Zepf , along with Bill Hamblin were runners-up in their respective weight classes. The preceding six wrestlers attended CWOSSA championships where KCI as a team placed fourth out of 38 schools. Bob Emptage and Larry Zepf were CWOSSA winners while Frank Zepf placed second. Bob, Larry and Frank journeyed to the Ontario Championships in Hamilton where KCI placed 12th out of 168 schools. Frank Zepf placed 5th at 130 lbs. and Larry placed 2nd at 123 lbs. after losing by one point in his final match which went into overtime. This ended a fantastic year for Larry, his season record being 36 wins and 2 losses. For his efforts he was voted outstanding wrestler on the KCI team. All in all the 72-73 season was a tremendous success both for the wrestlers who contributed and for the status of athletics at KCI. Already we look forward to 1973-74. D. REQUIEM FOR K.C.I. Someone has been there before us -- and done it all -- and had it all Leaving their garbage and waste for us to admire. Some of us stopped to look at it. But moved on quickly, realizing that the debris ' entombing foul fumes had long since been caused by age and over-usage. We have envied into idleness, We have swept the dirt from every corner, And we have put it back as we must. There are no more empty nooks for us to litter. But, if we did find a naked space, Our minds are so limited by traditional trash I wonder if we could fill it with any fresh litter.
