The two heads of the commoners and their council wanted to keep the people from getting absolutely fed up with working in the fields so they devised all sorts of schemes, clubs and committees. These were to give them a feeling of responsibility and accomplishment. The King gave the council permission to carry out most of these schemes, because a happy serf will work harder than an unhappy serf (at least that ' s what he hoped). Some of the schemes, clubs and committees were hellbent on making money and the rest were hellbent on spending money. So, supposedly, everything worked out evenly and everyone was happy. The King didn ' t really trust the peasants to carry out these activities by themselves so he had knights volunteer as sponsors. Some were good and some were bad and that ' s the way it goes.
