GRUMBLER 1971 KITCHENER Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a Kingdom called Kwacovol. King Carl I ruled the kingdom with an iron hand. He set down The Laws, and though some of them were pretty weird, he really wasn ' t too bad a guy. King Carl had two men who were powerful counts to help him rule The Kingdom. They were commonly known as the Count of Fifth and the Count of Fourth. They had great power in the Kingdom and they interpreted The Laws as set down by King Carl, and passed judgement on wrongdoers. Below the counts were the Axemen, who oddly enough were women - Dame Kirby and Dame Aspinall. They were the bearers of doom, and givers of punishment. With only one stroke of their mighty pens, they could send wrongdoers to The Dungeon, which they liked to call The Detention Room . The King, like any other king also had his Knights who were named The Knights of the Crokinole Table , by the commoners. King Carl liked to call them The Faculty . Their duties were to watch over the peasants and report all wrongdoers to the axeman, the counts or The King and to keep the peasants working to keep them out of trouble. A few of the better known knights were: Sir James the Saddler Sir Rowland the Blacker Sir Firth the Doc Sir Spencer of Garth Sir Hamilton the Lionel Hearted Sir Peter the Pigeon Some of them were nicer to the peasants than others. One thing different about The King ' s Knights is that some of them were women. Surprisingly, enough the peasantry of Kwacovol as well as having an all powerful king, had an elected government with two Heads at the top. The Heads had an executive as their advisors and a council consisting of representatives from the peasantry and serfs. The King had the right to veto absolutely anything the council decided as suited his fancy. To make sure the council and the Heads didn ' t get out of line, the King sent a spy amongst them. The spy was given the code name CRE, but was known to the peasants as Sir Clare, Protector of Food and Services and Manipulators of Books. Since the peasants could ill afford to pay the Heads a regular salary, they had to double as court jesters for the King. The council ran all sorts of crazy schemes and events to keep the peasants occupied and to keep up their spirits. We will see some of these schemes as the story progresses.
