As you all know, being a peasant or a serf is not the most pleasant experience, so it is obvious that the people of Kwacovol would be extremely grateful if someone let them leave. This grateful departure has been shortened throughout the years to Grad and the plural Grads. It just so happened that every year King Carl allowed the serfs who had done their correct allotment of work and had lived in Kwacovol for four years or more if they were under the jurisdiction of the Count of Fourth and five years or more if they were under the jurisdiction of the Count of Fifth to leave the kingdom and go wherever they pleased. King Carl did not do this out of the kindness of his heart, but because every year some of those who were freed from the neighbouring kingdoms decided to live in Kwacovol and Kwacovol could only hold so many people. To leave the kingdom the peasants had to collect documents from six or seven knights saying that they had fulfilled their work quotas. On presenting these they would receive their one-way ticket (called for some crazy reason a diploma) out of Kwacovol. Many serfs couldn ' t stand living in Kwacovol and they escaped before their work term was up. The main trouble with this was that you could not go many places outside of Kwacovol if you did not have a diploma to flash at border crossings.
