O 1 jO 3c 971.302 K64g, 1971 |Grumbler GRUMBLER 1971 KITCHENER Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a Kingdom called Kwacovol. King Carl I ruled the kingdom with an iron hand. He set down The Laws, and though some of them were pretty weird, he really wasn ' t too bad a guy. King Carl had two men who were powerful counts to help him rule The Kingdom. They were commonly known as the Count of Fifth and the Count of Fourth. They had great power in the Kingdom and they interpreted The Laws as set down by King Carl, and passed judgement on wrongdoers. Below the counts were the Axemen, who oddly enough were women - Dame Kirby and Dame Aspinall. They were the bearers of doom, and givers of punishment. With only one stroke of their mighty pens, they could send wrongdoers to The Dungeon, which they liked to call The Detention Room . The King, like any other king also had his Knights who were named The Knights of the Crokinole Table , by the commoners. King Carl liked to call them The Faculty . Their duties were to watch over the peasants and report all wrongdoers to the axeman, the counts or The King and to keep the peasants working to keep them out of trouble. A few of the better known knights were: Sir James the Saddler Sir Rowland the Blacker Sir Firth the Doc Sir Spencer of Garth Sir Hamilton the Lionel Hearted Sir Peter the Pigeon Some of them were nicer to the peasants than others. One thing different about The King ' s Knights is that some of them were women. Surprisingly, enough the peasantry of Kwacovol as well as having an all powerful king, had an elected government with two Heads at the top. The Heads had an executive as their advisors and a council consisting of representatives from the peasantry and serfs. The King had the right to veto absolutely anything the council decided as suited his fancy. To make sure the council and the Heads didn ' t get out of line, the King sent a spy amongst them. The spy was given the code name CRE, but was known to the peasants as Sir Clare, Protector of Food and Services and Manipulators of Books. Since the peasants could ill afford to pay the Heads a regular salary, they had to double as court jesters for the King. The council ran all sorts of crazy schemes and events to keep the peasants occupied and to keep up their spirits. We will see some of these schemes as the story progresses. We are glad because we have had the privilege of learning something that no amount of book learning can compensate for. We have learned many things, the most important one being that K.C.I, is people. K.C.I, is the thumping of hands on the back of the seats in the auditorium during the school song. It is the roar of the house as the curtain comes down for the last time on our major play. It ' s the dedication exhibited by the players on all teams, even in defeat. It ' s the zeal with which the older students physically welcome the grade nines at the beginning of the year. It ' s the spirit with which K.C.I, competes whether it be a cake eating contest or a football game, we, K.C.I., are there. K.C.I, is people and because it is people it is you. You are K.C.I. How can we thank you for being yourselves and making this year, the best ever. You let us represent you and may we say at this time a very warm and deserved thank-you! K.C.I, will always remain the same for those of us who are leaving this year. In the past we belonged to K.C.I., now she belongs to you. Carry on. Alice Yes, but where do I begin? No one dares To die before his time, though. No One cares just when his time to go Will be, or where it finds him. He Just wants the action when it be. He knows that death will strike or hit Sometime when he does least expe . . . K.C.I, where else could you find... FACULTY The Faculty ' s duties were to keep peasants working, to try and prevent any breaking of The Laws and to report wrongdoers and shit disturbers to the axemen, counts or king. Most of the faculty could control the majority of the rabble with one flick of their bullwhips (commonly known as tongues) but there was one major problem that they all faced. This was no ordinary peasant, this was Radical the Dragon. He would disturb the working of the peasants. He would refute the ideas of the Faculty which had been passed down from generations before. He would break the most venerable laws. He would raise havoc among the peasants. He would sit on the castle stairs (and since he was a fire breathing dragon he was a fire hazard). He would argue against the rulings of The King and he would even chew gum in the presence of King Carl. It was the Faculty ' s duty to do all they could to prevent his getting control over the peasantry. But Radical could not be easily daunted, even banishment from The Kingdom would not stop him. A few of the Knights realized that Radical sometimes made sense and they listened to him but the majority were not so open-minded. And so it was that Radical was forever being chased and threatened but that was alright because it gave something for Radical to gripe about all the time. The Knights wore their armour and carried a lance only when they were on the war path or after Radical otherwise they used their bullwhips. ■«%r am Mr. J. Anderson, B.A.Sc. This grateful departure has been shortened throughout the years to Grad and the plural Grads. It just so happened that every year King Carl allowed the serfs who had done their correct allotment of work and had lived in Kwacovol for four years or more if they were under the jurisdiction of the Count of Fourth and five years or more if they were under the jurisdiction of the Count of Fifth to leave the kingdom and go wherever they pleased. King Carl did not do this out of the kindness of his heart, but because every year some of those who were freed from the neighbouring kingdoms decided to live in Kwacovol and Kwacovol could only hold so many people. To leave the kingdom the peasants had to collect documents from six or seven knights saying that they had fulfilled their work quotas. On presenting these they would receive their one-way ticket (called for some crazy reason a diploma) out of Kwacovol. Many serfs couldn ' t stand living in Kwacovol and they escaped before their work term was up. The main trouble with this was that you could not go many places outside of Kwacovol if you did not have a diploma to flash at border crossings. Ifes T - — . SCOTT ACHESON: Finish High School. All the schemes had two purposes: 1. to entertain the rabble 2. to make money The only problem was that everyone usually forgot number 2; everyone that is, except for the Special Events Committee and their sponsor. (Their sponsor wasn ' t an ordinary knight — he was the Roman ambassador for the Kingdom.) And so, the peasants enjoyed themselves at the social functions, and they always wished that there were more. ■ Hi Grade Nines i Suffer Indignities ...and Love It! i i The seeds of revolutionary thoughts being implanted in young minds. A lot of these hostilities were for the knights, but of course the peasants couldn ' t show these or else the knights would report them to the axemen. Since the king didn ' t want open revolt he devised a method whereby the peasants could have supposedly friendly battles with neighbouring kingdoms using all sorts of different weapons such as footballs, basketballs, and hockey sticks. Of course the peasants weren ' t quite as friendly as they were supposed to be, but the king didn ' t mind because they were burning up their hostilities. Another great reason for having the sports was that it used up most of the money that the schemes, clubs, and committees earned so that the councils ' books worked out evenly. The peasants had a great time participating and everyone was happy that is except for the peasants who didn ' t get to participate in the sports or didn ' t enjoy watching them. mmsm B.A.A. These were to give them a feeling of responsibility and accomplishment. The King gave the council permission to carry out most of these schemes, because a happy serf will work harder than an unhappy serf (at least that ' s what he hoped). Some of the schemes, clubs and committees were hellbent on making money and the rest were hellbent on spending money. So, supposedly, everything worked out evenly and everyone was happy. The King didn ' t really trust the peasants to carry out these activities by themselves so he had knights volunteer as sponsors. Some were good and some were bad and that ' s the way it goes. FORMS King Carl was quite a methodical man and instead of calling the villages in the kingdom by proper names such as Craigy Corners or Henry ' s Heights he labelled them with a combination of numbers and letters. The names of the villages under the Count of Fourth started with the number 4 and all those under the Count of Fifth started with the number 5 which was all extremely logical. The King also liked to regiment the villages so that all the people in the village had worked the same number of years in their work term. So, the next number in the sequence stands for the year number of the peasant ' s work term. 9 stands for one year, 10 for two, 11 for three and Since there was more than one village in each stage of the work term a letter was added to the two numbers. So you ' d have a name formed with three parts. And thus we get the name form. Each form was under the rule of one knight to whom the form (around thirty peasants) had to report every morning at nine. After reporting each peasant had to follow a schedule which told him in whose fields he had to work at what time. Each knight watched over the workers in his fields using a bullwhip (commonly known as a tongue) to egg the peasants on to greater efforts. 59A 59 B FIRST ROW: Mary Cann, Penny Weinstein, Mary Anne Haney, Andrea Suerich, Debbie Ward, Kathy Stuart, Cheryl Miller, Sheila Peck, Debi Somer.
