September 3, the early morning stillness was pierced by the shrill from Head Coach DiOrio's whistle as pre-season practice began for Kiski's football team. Over fifty candidates came back two weeks early, each eagerly hoping for a starting position. Led by co- captains Ted Vincent and Mark Sapp, the players pre- pared themselves for the agony and the pain that accompany a team striving for the League Champion- ship. Practice itself consisted of three workouts a day, each with the drills necessary to develop the agility, skill, and strength in the players. New strategies were developed by the coaches to effectively neutralize the opposing team's offense and to score points on the board. Im- pressed by the skills of the new as well as of the old players, the coaches prepared the team for a long but hopefully victorious season. If pre-season was any sign of the forthcoming games, it reflected a great many hopes for success. After splitting two non-League games with a record of 1-1-0, the pressure to win increased in the team as the dates of the League games approached. Each indi- vidual player sensed that all the previous effort in practice would now show on the football field whether or not he waus ready. The League games came, each one tougher but more important than the previous one. With an undefeated record against Nichols, Western Reserve, and Cranbrook, the Kiski football team faced I'll never forget the Penns Manor game. lt was worth it. - Sandy Gallo University School and its own unbeaten and determined team. The training paid off as Kiski narrowly defeated U.S. in an exciting and excellently played second half by a score of 44 to 37. Even a loss to Shady Side the next week failed to dampen the team's spirit in bringing to Kiski the much-hoped-for first place in the League standings. It was the crowning achievement to a football team after such a brilliant season. Under the training of two new coaches, Mr. Stokes and Mr. Curtiss, the Varsity Soccer Team leamed the essential qualities that prevent a team from becoming disorganized and dull. There were defeats and few victories in the season, but we learned to work as a team, compensating as best as we could for each other's shortcomings. Due to our relative inexperience we went against other teams who outplayed us, but our individual efforts overshadowed our own discouragements. The team centered around the defensive backfield with Tom Kovalchuk and Mark Wilson slowing down the op- posing team's line while john Knox literally used his head to give the half-backs VValt Laird, Tom Kovalchuk and Rod Frank, the necessary advantages to overcome the opposing forwards. Across our line Bud Easton, john Ra- tini, Steve Page and Bob VVebster carried the offense to the other team's goal. Scott Meer played an admirable game after Bud's injury, and both Philip Botti and Doug Trimble are to be commended. These Freshmen will provide the solid support for next year's team. Against Shady Side Academy, the first half remained scoreless. The second half showed our main weakness, the lack of depth. Our record is uninspiring, but we learned to make up for our weaknesses and to operate as a single unit against superior teams. In this respect we were successful. 97 n My-1 -A In s., - , vs. 'S + V+- -,Q I.. K ' S 1,-Y' 3, , A W In 1 ' xg i -sy-ti. ' - W' , ' .-S-, K JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER Kiski Opp 0 Shaler 2 .. Despite the barriers' hopes and abilities, the team never got off the ground. Seven runners reported early last fall for pre-season. They started each dav with a run into Slickville and back at 5:30 each morning. Aftemoon practices included mileage on the track, up the hill, and around the cross-country course. Although plagued by injuries all year, the season held bright spots for the team. The co-captains Mac Swinford and jerry Prusack finished first and second in many meets. The Gold Dust Twins, as they were called by Mr. Pidgeon and Mr. Neill, showed dedication to the team by rising early in the morning to run before classes Mark Ihrig improved over last year to tally some impressive performances including a fourth place against Shady Side. Three juniors will return next year. jeff Henry was looking good at the beginning of the season, but broke his ankle and was out most of the meets. He recovered late in the season, though, to add a necessary boost to the team. Along with jeff, Rick juve, Charlie Tourtillotte, Brad Running Fox Fox, Brent Taylor, Porter Hill, and Andy Kavouras will return next year to try another time for the coveted League title. 105 i The harriers traversed over 600 miles this season. After the students and faculty received the news of a possible league championship in football, campus spirit and support for the team soared. In the game against Univer- sity School which determined the first place team, Kiski support reached a frenzy. The Kiski defense held U.S. in the final seconds to ensure a victory and a first-place standing in league scores. The team was unbeaten and ready for Shady Side. Getting ready for Shady Side involved a long and continuous process. Under the Varsity Club's direction Psyche week was initiated to increase the school spirit. Psyche week would not have been possible without marching tunes played throughout the campus from Mr. Dawson's lab, while posters in all the clamrooms and buildings announced the students support. Mr. Kozub and his V.W. alias The Cougar Car provided the seat for the school mascot in the pep-rally parade. Held the night before the SSA game, the pep-rally set the final stage of Psyche Week. The so-called parade floats consisted of the old black bus swarming with football players followed by a truck carrying the soccer team. Next came the cross- country runners in the blue pick-up. The parade drove through the campus to the great bonfire behind the foot- ball bleachers where Psyche Week reached its climax in the cheers, pep talks and the yearly burning of the Shady Side dummy . Heartbroken by the next day's defeat, the student body could only wait for next year's football season and another chance to trounce their arch-rival. QW!! Much of the burden was borne by the seniors, and next year's squad will be hard pressed to replace them. john Hilton provided most of the team's points while seniors Ted Vincent, Santo Cullo, Gary Arabia, Tim Fruehan, and john Knox provided the support to win. Tracy King, Rick juve, Don Corace, Mark Owen, and Blaine McCann will prove valuable next year as well as Steve McNeal and Dan Horgan in setting up for the coming season. When the 1974-1975 season arrived for the Kiski Varsity Swimming team, the tankmen prepared for a long and frustrating season. Shady Side's surprising vic- tory at the I.S.S.L Relay Meet meant that the workouts would have to be both strenuous and long. Completing over 200 miles in only four months, it was apparent that the team's dedication in the face of overwhelming odds was up to par, and the final record showed the results of the swimmers' efforts. There were easy victories against Gilmour, Western Reserve and Shady Side but against determined U.S., those long workouts in the afternoon and especially the exhausting morning practices at 6:00 A.M. paid off as Kiski excitingly came back in the final relay to win the meet by a score of 42-41. In the meet with Hawkin, Kiski registered its only defeat against the team which later won the much coveted I.S.S.L Cham- pionships. Throughout the season perhaps the most important factor in judging the team's efforts was Mr. Pidgeon's notebook containing all the yardage of each workouts. In spite of the increasing yardage each day, the swim- mers knew that the competition was fierce and that a few personal sacrifices would have to be made to win. More importantly than any notebook or school record, the team as a whole leamed the value of working together in spite of all the difficulties they encountered. Seven seniors will graduate this year, but there are more than enough excellent underclassmen who can turn a mediocre season into personal and team achievements. It often is relatively easy to forget the individual accom- plishments which characterized the team's successful season, but the determination exhibited by the swim- mers certainly can not be overlooked. Ji 4 Led by senior co-captains joe Orr and john New- combe, the Varsity Wrestling team posted a successful 10-4 record. At 158 pounds, joe Orr exemplified t.he spirit and the dedication of the entire team, finishing with a 13-1 record while Newcombe tumed in a re- spectable 9-3-1 record. Other talented seniors, included Charlie Reynolds, Bud Easton, Mark Ihrig, jim Tripoli, Craig Moffett, Wally Laird and john Ferguson. The season's most spectacular victories were resoimd- ing victories against arch-rival Shady Side Academy. Next year's team will have enough retuming lettermen to promise another exciting season despite the great talent that will be lost by this year's graduating seniors. As a team the grapplers faced several strong schools, but individual initiative and experience carried the team through a very difficult season. With the continual dedication and determination of the entire coaching staff and of the returning team members, wrestling fans should have something to look forward to next year. Tom Wehe set a new school record in the 330-yard hurdles. Doug Green- wood had an outstanding year, taking second in the discus and third in the shot-put at the Interstate Prep League competition. Mac Swinford missed what probably would have been a championship two-mile victory because of a leg injury. jerry Prusack, how- ever, with a time of 10:08 garnered second place in the two-mile at the Interstates.
