These words of Shakespeare describe as well as any the Bob Brinker we all knew. He was a man of many parts, a scholar, a lover of nature, an artist, a poet, and an admirer of athletics-all of these things combined to make him what he really was-a civilized man who was a teacher of other men. Most who were not intimately associated with this school do not, l believe, think of Bob primarily as being a teacher. They think of him rather as a keen Director of Admissions with an insight into boys which enabled him to foresee what frightened young 13 year-old applicant would become in four years, and whose charm formed friendships which lasted all through those four years. They think of him as the highly successful Director of Devel- opment and Alumni relations who took the name of Kiski to all parts of the country. These things Bob Brinker was, and these things he did with consumate grace. But those of us who knew him here, at his work, knew him as a teacher in the finest sense of the word, a man who loved to impart knowledge to people of all ages, and who did it with natural ease. To teachers of lesser talent, a small blackboard- lined room is the classroom, and the place where knowledge is mechanically passed on. For the great teachers, the world is the class- room, and knowledge flows from them freely, en- riching their conversation as the spring rain en- riches the mountain streams from which we drink. Bob was a natural teacher, a great teacher, equally at home explaining the wonders of a seashell to the wide-eyed little faculty children who invariably found their way to his door or explaining his poli- tics to a worldly-wise Kiski senior, or as a con- servationist showing generations of city boys how to appreciate the beauties of nature and to realize man's intimate connection with all other forms of animal and plant life, or pointing out celestial phe- nomena to adult astronomers. The world was his classroom, and all who came into contact with him were his pupils. He was a man of erudition. But erudition is not always an en- dearing quality. Some men wear it heavily and clumsily as though it were an overly large suit of armor. Bob wore his lightly with the same jaunti- ness with which he wore his beret and flowing scarf each winter. His erudition was not a costume which he donned each day, but rather an exten- sion of his personality. He was above all things a civilized man. Only five days before he died, l told Bob a story. I came upon him talking animatedly with a young student after lunch. And when the conversation had ended he put on his beret and walked off with his scarf stringing out in the December wind. The young man stood looking after him for a moment and then turned to me and said: Gee, that Mr. Brinker is sure a cool guy. l am glad l told that story to Bob before he died because l am sure that the honest affection and recognition of what he really was, which was included in the young boy's remark, made him very happy. Robert Brinker is a Kiski institution. He has gained the only kind of immortality it is possible for a man to gain-to be preserved in the hearts and minds and in the very lives of the generation of young men and adults whom he so deeply touch- ed. There are many ways, I suppose to determine the success of a man's life, and by any of these Bob's can be judged a great success. The build- ings of this lovely campus which he did so much to create: the hundreds and hundreds of students now grown to adulthood bearing the valuable pieces of erudition which he so generously gave them, the magnificent family, the love and affection which have always stood out as one of the won- ders of this community. All these by any standard of judgement mark his life as a successful one, but most of all I think he would like to be summed up in the words of that young student whom l quoted, That Mr. Brinker is sure a cool guyl The young man was really saying about Bob what Shake- speare was saying about Brutus- and the elements so mixed in him that nature might say this was a man! -John Anderson Pidgeon x .ff 1 . Their selection is based upon their positive attitude toward the school and its beliefs and on their potential for leadership, Their purpose is to provide a means of communication between faculty and students. The prefects work in conjunction with the interests of the students, administration, and faculty. Those student leaders aid in enforcing the school's regulations and thereby fill the vital role of student self government. 122 PCJLITICAL FORUM First Row: Frank Byrne, Peter Ellenzweig, Howard Scott, Gus Martin, moderator, Fred Charley Paul Herrington, Jim DeLuca. Last year, the club broke away from its usual tradition and. instead of producing a full length play, put on a series of short excerpts from famous plays. This year, however, the club's advisor and director, Mrs. Rita Frank, and the faculty advisor, Mr. Salomon Murciano, decided to return to the concept of an entire play, which will be put on sometime in the spring. The play selected is Stalag 17 and we can surely look forward to some excellent drama from this club then. 124 ST. The St. Andrew's Society, an interdenominational group under the faculty direction of Mr. Botti enjoyed another productive year at Kiski. Among the projects of the organization was the Christmas concert in the Presbyterian Church, held each year for the benefit of the Society. They provided many food packages to needy families in this area at Christmas time. The club members have shown their sense of social commitment and have found their experiences rewarding. 125 FRENCH CLUB First Row: Bob Sands, Jon Rutter, Steve McNeal. Under the supervision of the faculty advisors, Mr. Brett and Mr. Murciano, the club has grown to prominence among all the language clubs. The proposed agenda for the year includes a trip to Canada, a French Club dance, and a dinner for all members. The members have put on a number of short skits and have learned several songs, including the French National Anthem. 126 9iM .,. VARSITY CLUB The Kiski Varsity Club is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have earned their Varsity letters in one or more varsity sports. The club is governed by the Varsity Club Council which is composed of the captains of all Varsity sports. The primary goal of the club is to foster and maintain school spirit. A pep rally was held before Klski's last home league game. ln addition, the club engaged in various activities to have money for projects which will aid the school's athletic program. During the fall, members ol the club operated a refreshment stand during the football games. 127 First Row: Rod Frank, Mike Posner, Greg Floro, Bob O'Bradovich, Brad Henry, Brad Townsend, Mark Floro, John Sladic, Dave Freedman, Bob Good, Steve Friedberg. GLEE CLUB This year's Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Carmino Boni, has presented numerous fine concerts for the student body here at Kiski. Through their twice-weekly practice sessions, the club has polished its sound, and is indeed an outstanding Choral ensemble. ln addition, the double quartet, made up of eight members of the Glee Club, provides an interesting and harmonious counterpoint to the sound of the larger group. ln cooperation with other schools in the area, there have been concerts with these schools. Most notable of these was the Christmas concert given at the Presbyterian Church for the benefit of the St. Andrews Society. A high spot of the evening was Bob O'Bradovich's solo rendition of O Holy Night . We hope the Glee Club will retain its fine tradition and continue in the future to provide enjoyment and culture for the students here at Kiski. 128 First Row: Angie Ratini, Frank Byrne, John Kautman, John Higgins, Paul Herrington, Fred Charley, Dave Callahan, John Braver, Bruce MacConnell. Second Row: Pat Kelley. Brad Henry. Jay Clark, Al Wein, Keith Moody, Pete Ellenzweig, Jett Bondy. PCETFIY FORUM This year has been the Poetry Forum's fifth year at Kiski. Under the direction and guidance of Mr. Fabian and Mr. Millar, the Forum was established in cooperation with The International Poetry Forum, Pittsburgh Chapter. Through this international organization, students travel to the regular meetings to listen to the poetry and interpretations of contemporary poets. During the 1972-1973 scholastic year, the purpose of the club was to stimulate the members of the club to appreciate these literary works through interpretation and discussion of our contemporary poets and their works. 129 CHESS CLUB First Row: Mark Floro, Frank Byrne, Jim Apple, Ramon Triana, Jim Menges, John Brungo. Third Row: Bob Gates, Jeff Bondy, Jett Bosnak, Randy Brown, Dave Ellenzweig, Chuck Prezzia, Andy McGregor, Lou Tripoli. Fourth Row: Tyler Shultz, Rich Leydig, Marty Caplan. This year's Chess Club was unfortunate in losing their long-time advisor and mentor, Mr. Robert Brinker. He was the founder of the club here at Kiski, and guided it for many years, arranging matches with other schools and helping the players to improve their skill at the game. Club membership had remained generally stable for many years, but this year there was a great upsurge in interest in this ancient game, due in most part to the much publicized Fisher-Spassky World Championship match. The club's new advisor, Mr. Porsche, arranged a match with the Kiski Area Chess Team on March 17, which our Kiski team won easily. Wins on the varsity level were recorded by Brungo, Floro, and Seal, with team captain Triana playing the first position to a draw. This was an excellent showing for the team, as this was their first match of the season, and Kiski Area had gone previously undefeated. 130 g PHCTOGRAPHY CLUB First Row: Brad King, Bruce McConnell, Keith Moody, Jeff Bosnak, Pete Chase, Mark Floro. Second Row: Tyler Shultz, Mohammed Dayani, Mark Sladic, David Callahan, Jim Canvasser, Bob Good, Eric Gier, Kurt Steele, Mark Katz. The Photography Club is new at Kiski this year. Sponsored by Mr. Turley, and advised by Mr. Koedel, a professional photographer, the cIub's purpose is to help students learn camera techniques and darkroom procedure. Mr. Koedel comes to Kiski twice a week to instruct both beginning and ad- vanced sessions in photography. 131 DEBATE TEAM g First Row: Walter Laird, Jeff Green, Frank Byrne, Rod Frank, John Fleck. Second Row: Bob Good, Tim Wenham, Randy Calloway, Tom Puskar, Tom Wehe. Marty Caplan. Debate entered its second year at Kiski with Frank Byrne as captain. ln debates at Uniontown High School, Bethany College, and at home, the squad compiled an overall record of sixteen wins and nineteen losses. For a relatively inexperienced team-five are Sophomores-this is an excellent record. ln speech contests, a new event this year, ranks of first, eighteen, second, twelve, and third, nine, were attained at tournaments hosted by Kiski, West Mifflin North High School, and Penn-Trafford High School. Fiandy Callaway, Rod Frank, and Walt Laird are new to debate. They joined verterans Bob Good, Tim Wenham, John Fleck, and Jeff Green. Added to this roster for speech contests are Marty Caplan, John Knox, Tom Puskar, and Tom Wehe. Credit points from the National Forensic League, the speaking honor fraternity, were earned enabling most of the squad to become members of the NFL. The excellent relationship between Kiski's debaters and those of the Ellis School continued this year with a workshop in the Winter Term and a social day in the Spring. Team members look forward to possible state competition in Radio Announcing and to the invitational debate tournament at Valley Forge Military Academy which traditionally ends the season. 132 AUDIO-VISUAL CLUB First Row: Jim Apple, Bob Good, Steve Bono, Brian Bono, Lynn Dudinsky, Mark Sladic. VARSITY SGCCER the season as if they were going to the World Cup finals, but bad luck and many injuries hampered the team to a finish with a 3-8-1 record. The team started out by knocking off three very tough opponents. They beat Central Catholic 2-1, Elderton 1-0 in very wet and cold weather, and finally Sewickly 1-0. The first league game was with Uni- versity School. The booters all gave great efforts but went down in defeat by losing 2-1. Faced with many in- juries and bad breaks, Kiski lost to University School, Cranbrook, Al- toona, Western Reserve, Sewickly, and Nichols in hard fought matches. The Cougar's last game was against Shady Side at home. The team held Shady Side scoreless for 4 Regulation the second overtime quarter, an un- lucky goal was scored against Kiski. The Shady Side encounter was prob- ably Kiski's best played game even though it ended in a loss. Shady Side was league Champion. Mr. Szilagyi and Mr. Botti did a fine job of coaching this year's team and deserve great credit. Captains Succop and Richards led the team this year and did a fine job. Other starters that did a fine job in- clude Kevin Kutz, Mohamed Dayani, Brad Townsend, Chris Hassler, Angie Ratini, Terry Brett, John Higgins, Pete Chase, and Mike Timmerman. JUNIOR VARSITY SCCCER The basis for the surprising success of the Junior Varsity soccer team this year was based on determination, a little bit of luck, the fine coaching, and finally the learning of fundamentals of the game. Mr. Brett took the reins of control this year as head coach, and he immediately realized what kind of trouble he was in as far as experienced players on the field was concerned. In two weeks coach Brett with the help of coaches Nanney and Stokes pulled their large and loosely aligned athletes together to form a team. After frantic preparations, the Kiski J.V.'s went to Fox Chapel to be downed in a 2-0 contest. This was their last taste of de- feat except for their last game. The Cougar's final record was 5- 2-2, this record is by tar the best of any J.V. team in years past. 142 Igfufmaa J, 1- lri asain-v EFHFQSI' First Flow: Bob Webster, Rick Juve, Lynn Dudinsky, Doug Saunders, and Mike Dexter. FFIESHIVIAN SOCCER The Cub soccer team this year under the direc- tion of coach Murciano had a very good year. The team was very inexperienced yet was able to have a winning season. The freshmen were able to score wins against such rivals as Valley School, Elderton, and Shady Side. The team spirit and willingness to work hard was the key to their success. With cub teams like this in the future, the Junior Varsity teams at Kiski are assured to have the depth which they need. 143 Zi' 1 . ' an W . 'ii V' . VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Some cross-country courses stretch out over green fields, up mountain sides, across scenic golf links, and through woods of multi-colored trees with paths laden with leaves all made lovely by the hands of fall. Cross-country by some is considered a therapy or temporary refuge from the hustle and bustle of today's world. There is nothing more ecological than a dedi- cated cross-country runner doing a few miles in the fog-laden air of the early morning. Up before the sun to enjoy the dew covered fields one might find our own Kiski harriers striving to harvest this tall's Interstate Prep School League championship. Mr. Pidgeon was optimistic about this coming season as his team compiled a 3-2 record against some stiff area competition. The season might have gone either way, unfortunately the breaks did not go our way. Captain Gus Martin was plagued by a flurry of injuries that slowed his progress and kept his true potential from surfacing. While the Cougar team fought with commendable spirit they lost two heartbreaking meets. University School squeaked out a 28-30 victory in the opening Interstate League competition de- spite a superior showing by Brad Killer Henry fa name derived by his way with women and not his athletic prowessj. The following week the Cougar kids took to the road determined to spoil the Cranbrook home- coming. But again the harriers lost by a margin of only one point, this time 27-28. The ride back from Detroit seemed endless that evening. Each member of the team felt a fine optimism before the meets. Each member knew inside that his talent and strength were there, like an unlit powder keg waiting to explode. The week of October 28 held a dissappointment and the worst defeat of this year as the Western Reserve Pioneers ran past the Kiski Crew early in the lopsided victory 28-38. Finally in the last meet of the season the keg went off as the Kiski Cross-country recorded its first League win and shutout over the visiting Nich- ols team. It was a strong finish. The Cougars cap- tured the first six places and a new course record by Killer in 17:05. It was a great job well done! 144 I, . , .L:, EW, Ex hi? Led by co-captains Andy Toncic and Carl Tal- bott, the 1973 Cougars gained second place in the l.S.P.L. behind co-champions University School and Nichols Academy. A fine balance between running and receiving enabled this team to twice shatter the school's single game-scoring record with victories over Shady Side C44-OJ and Cran- brook Q42-141. Early in the season, however, the Cougars suf- fered disheartening losses to Plum and University School which ruined the team's dream of having a highly successful season. Following the loss to University School, the Cougars staged a late sea- son rally to win three of their final four games. This surge included a come-from-behind victory over Western Reserve in which the Cougars came back from a 13-0 halftime deficit to win 20-13. 148 cial'-ia I Q, H Blairsville Plum High School Brentwood University School Cranbrook Western Reserve Nichols Shady Side 0 sl, ,f V Kiski 22 0 22 16 42 20 6 44 Opponent 0 6 22 22 14 13 22 0 ll nl, N f flfi 4 149 I 3 ax 1 150 Q ,N qw 1 ii sky- 5 -'ff X -My I 1 mum 4 rn Q 'Y JM W 54 Q if I gt, I ' S .3 'ii lf.: . JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity team had a heartbreaking but encouraging season, compiling a record of two wins as opposed to three losses and a tie. This record does not say, however, that there were no bright spots during the campaign. The highlights of the season were exciting vic- tories over Penn Hills, 7-0, and Hempfield, 22-14. ln the final game of the season Kiski fought a pow- erful contingent from Shady Side to a 14-14 tie. Kiski showed a fine effort and spirit in the three setback at the hands of Blairsville, Greensburg Central Catholic, and Plum. It is this kind of deter- mination which will prove to be valuable in future interscholastic competition. The key factor which marred the team's chances for success were inexperience and lack of depth. The plays of many inexperienced ballplayers this year gave coaches Vlahos and Pawlosky optimism for a fine team next year. Among the outstanding performers on the team were Steve Blum, Mark Floro, Doug Butts, Burt Coit, Chuck Prezzia, Steve Friedberg, John New- combe, and Dave DeSimone. In the backfield were Joe Orr and Gary Arabia switching at wingback, Tracy King at fullback, Mark Allman at halfback, and Scott Welham at quarterback. . , as SS.. , . Q.: l, gl A of iii xt. FFZESHMAN FOGTBALL There can be nothing more devastating than to sit on a cold, snowy, and wind-swept football field with a warm feeling that comes from winning a game. There are only 5 seconds left in the game with the score 12 to 8 and your heart goes to your feet as you watch one of their men cross the goal line. That is the way the whole Freshman team felt on their fifth game of the season. Although the Freshman team lost that game, it was one of the most well-played games of their season. Throughout the entire game there was an outstanding effort by the whole team. That was one game out of many, but you cannot judge a whole team by one game. Throughout the entire season the team played well under the fine coach- ing of Mr. Corwin and Mr. McLaren. Their coach- ing was an invaluable asset to the team's perform- ance. It was they who gave their time to teach us what they knew and make football players out of us even if they killed us. And there were times when they did just that. The team practiced through all types of weather and both Mr. Corwin and Mr. McLaren were out there with us trying their hardest to prepare us for games. What would a football team be without players? On the first day there were a good number that turned out. After that many dropped out or went somewhere else. Finally the team ended up with about 35 sophomores and freshmen. Among these were such people as Tracy King who was a good all-around player and a great asset to the team. Steve McNeal was one of the best receivers, and Frank Marsalan was a good quarterback and de- fensive player. Everyone on the team contributed something sometime and without it the team would lack something. Altogether the efforts of both the team members and that of the coaches turned out a very respect- able season. 153 KIS KI M.. The spirit, training, and de- termination of the swimmers brought the best season ever to the varsity swimming team. Their training was tough, but it was worth it for their 7-1 record and the two Champion- ship titles. The 'entire team's dedication was obvious and - proved by their performances in competition. The team began their sea- son well by taking the l.S.S.L. Relay title in a record number of points. Their 4-1 record in league competition was good i enough to earn a tie for first place in dual meet com- petition. ln the l.S.S.L. Championship Meet the team fell just short of the league crown with a close loss to Hawkin School. There were 11 finalists and they showed the true strength of the team in the finals. Kiski sent her Medley Relay to the Eastern Prep School Championships. It broke an- other School Record, and it could still win the Honorable Mention of being All-Ameri- can. However, in the 100 yard Breaststroke, Bill Bower was fast enough to capture first place. 1 155 2569+ , lay-: , 5 3 1 ff- 4- df ' .
