Main- tain silence about the decksp knock off all games of chance, the boatswain mate of the watch would say. And with that announcement a multitude of sailors would come to hear LT Willie S. Williams give his sermons, to sing hymns and pray for family and friends. So, after titivating the ship for the past two for morel hours, the time has come for the Executive Officer to make his rounds through the ship's berthing and mess areas. lt booms across the lMC like a judgement from Cod: Standby for XO's inspection of messing and berthing spaces! The cleaners anx- iously await his arrival, because they know how stringent his standards of cleanliness are. If they have done their job well, there will not be a trace of dust anywhere, the decks will glimmer with a fluorescent shine and the ship's heads will not smell of anything worse than pine oil. And, so, the cleaning crew sighs with relief as they realize they have passed another inspection.
