SOCIAL STUDIES One of the most important functions of educa- tion is to prepare the student to assume a re- sponsible position as a citizen in the world of tomorrow. The Social Studies course-s at Kirk- wood High School strive to instill in the student an understanding and tolerance of the many peoples of the world, in addition to familiarizing him with the government of his own country. By learning how these various organizations function, the student is better able to detect and discover solutions for the many problems of the political world of to-day. A knowledge of history and geography is also essential to the individual, living in an ever-shrinking world, for every day each nation of the world is drawn ever clo-ser to one another. Sociology classes aid the student to adjust to society, by encour- aging him to relate his knowledge and eX- perience in the hope that he will be able to attain his goals and ambitions. Through dis- cussion and debate on these subjects, students acquire many new ideas which will influence their thinking in the years' to come. Social Studies courses at K. H. S. are not only instruc- tive, but popular with the stude-nts. lt is hoped that the knowledge gained from. these classes will be beneficial to the student later on in life. Through their studies, the citizens of tomorrow will be better prepared to secure the blessings cf freedom for themselves and the next genera- tion. Exper- ience dictates that a knowledge of this caliber is invaluable in alleviating world situations by allowing us to better understand the peoples and cultures of other countries. This type of knowledge is acquired through the aid of en- thusiastic teachers who employ the use of proj- ects to develop a greater interest and compre- hension of the various aspects of the subjects. A few of these projects are the designing of posters, the constructing of maps or calendars, and the relating o-f experiences enjoyed by for- tunate- students who have traveled in a foreign country. Also, movies are shown which reveal the typ-ical life of one inhabiting a foreign do- main. All of these devices serve as a diverg- ence from the daily routine, and as a supple- ment to the textbook, in providing to the student a knowledge necessary for his well being. ln addition to this, the comprehension of a foreign language is esse-ntial in that it is effective in producing well enlightened students capable of assuming impressive roles in today's rapidly advancing civilization.
